Liz,

I just finished a couple demos on the James and Potomac - both low but
still able to board. Let's hit Fayette Station only - the last time I
did the New it wasn't that low and it took awhile to run the whole
thing not to mention the legs dragging over a number of rocks.

I'll be on the gauley for the festival weekend. The Animal Upper
Gauley Race is that monday the 24th and I'll be there too. We should
do a trip on the upper of all of us boarders on Friday if possible
instead of the new river.
Let me know what's up with all of you. Would love to get on the water
with all of you.

Shane,
Just so you know... the New River is at -3 right now and painfully
low. I think a warm up on fayette station rapid would be better than
the whole lower unless it comes up.

Also this year's GauleyFest nicely coincides with one of the US
National Whitewater Park's "riverboarding" days, which will be Monday
the 24th of September (Gauley is the 21st-23rd).

From 4-7pm on Monday the 24th come join us at the USNWC, if you
haven't been there yet now's your chance to go and meet a bunch of
other riverboarders from around the country as well!

Boating has been illegal on the Chattooga headwaters since the early
70's, but after years of tireless efforts American Whitewater has
pushed the forest service to accept comments and consider change.
For years, a very few vocal fisherman have blocked efforts to allow
boating on this stretch. I have nothing against fishing, but when a
few elitist anglers start whinning about how someone boating or
boarding down the river while they are fishing from shore is going
to ruin their fishing experience, well that's a load of horse crap.
There are plenty of other streams that don't have enough flow to
float down that they can go to if they want a serene experience.
Since when did they start thinking that they had exclusive rights to
the rivers? Don't let them win, make your voice heard.

Your letters & e-mails are needed!

It has been illegal to paddle the Chattooga Headwaters since 1976,
not long after Deliverance was made on that river. A group of
paddlers, canoe clubs, and American Whitewater have been battling
the U.S. Forest Service since the late 1990s to open those waters to
boating. It has been a protracted battle, but we have arrived at a
critical moment in the process. There will be two more comment
periods before the USFS renders a decision. We need your help now
for the first of those comment sessions.

There is more on the table here that just the boating ban. A number
of other non-boating management actions are also in the plans.

If you value the Chattooga's wildness or if you want to be able to
paddle the headwaters one day, please make your comments known.

The USFS document and request for comments is here:
http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/fms/documents/Chattoogascopingpackagefinal081

American Whitewater's position is here:
http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/Article_view_articleid_2980
2_display_full_

The USFS values thoughtful letters more than form letters. Please
review the material and consider the best option. Tell the USFS if
you think their mix of actions is inappropriate. Suggest other
actions if you think you should. You do not need to agree with the
AW position! Write your conscience.

Brian,

How late will they release water - understand you will be around for
2 more weeks - I make an annual trip East from Colorado for Gauley
and spend a couple weeks on both sides of that weekend trying
different rivers.

Thanks,

Ice, thanks for the heads up on the duct tape. I plan on getting some
better fins and a thicker wetsuit. I've been kayaking for 5 years now
and can see riverboarding is going to become just as addicting. Our
only problem here on the northeast coast is lack of water at times. I
will have to start searching out fellow boarders and rivers that can be
run.

Rob,

yeah, duct tape is great for some things but for fins, not so much! I remember trying that a few years ago and being in excruciating pain, not realizing beforehand that duct tape SHRINKS when it gets cold (aka in the river). Talk about cutting off the circulation lol. =)

Hope your feet are ok and glad you enjoyed riverboarding. =)

This past weekend I took my first ride on a Ripboard. I did the Dryway
section od the Deerfield River in Rowe MA. This is a class 3-4 section
of water and was a great testing ground. I had a blast and can't wait
to get back for more. I do need some new fins though as the walmart
ones that did not fit and needed to be duct taped to my feet were not

All you river boarders in the SE - take it from me - the USNWC is a
great place to go riverboarding (see photos section) and beginning
Monday June 18th, 6-9pm the park is open to riverboarding. The plan
is to open the course to riverboarding every other Monday (evenings 6-
9pm).

Cost is just like a kayak…$15 per 1.5 hour or $25 for the full 3
hours in this case. Please check in at the kayak check-in building.

USNWC requires riverboarders to have the following:
-real riverboards (no boogie boards)
-PFD
-helmet
-fins
-wetsuit bottoms with padding

USNWC staff is excited to include riverboarding as an activity at the
center and is hopeful these Monday evening experimental sessions will
be fun and safe.

Please call David Hepp with any questions,

Brian,

Soon - USNWC staff have tried it and liked it. Keep asking USNWC about
riverboarding (short answer).
Last Fall - I was able to convince the paddlesports director Dave Hepp
to try riverboarding and he along with several others including the
Rafting Manager, Aaron had a blast riverboarding USNWC. Dave told me
they are working to get their planned activities up and running smooth
and then look to add riverboarding.
Give USNWC a call and ask to speak with Dave - with some more interest
expressed in riverboarding - they will speed up the approval process.

Ken & Brian,

Yeah I was able to get the staff and some key employees out
riverboarding. They are definitely open to the idea and I will be
working with them some more this Spring to get riverboarding officially
approved. If anybody has an interest in riverboarding USNWC - visit
them in person, call them - make sure you talk to Dave Hepp -
Paddlesports Director. The more demand they see - more likely they
will speed up their decision process.
