John,
I would recommend taking a trip with www.extremenc.com so you can
test out some riverboarding equipment first before buying. They
offer trips on the French Broad river in western NC.

I nearly sold out of boards and will be going to Wash DC for a demo
on the Potomac - Tuesday Oct 31 - Will stop by and get that extra
board.

Has she quit her day job and started running the rivers yet ; )

Two boarders entered the Animal this year, Gary and Liz. Gary swept the mens
division, and
Liz swept the female division!!
Gary came in first with a time of 1hour, 17min, followed closely by Liz with a
time of 1 hour,
23 min.
It was a close one! Good times! Maybe we'll have more boarders in next year's
race!!!
RipBoard will be holding a couple more demo days:
Thursday - Sept 28 in Richmond, VA on the James River. Location - 14th
Street Take-Out beginning at 4:30pm.
Saturday - Sept 30 in Wash DC on the Potomac River. Location - Little
Falls section of the Potomac (turn out on the Clara Barton Pkwy -
northwest of the Georgetown Bridge)at 9am.

Coming soon - pics from the first riverboarders on the USNWC -
contrary to what people are saying - riverboarders were on the
whitewater park yesterday - Wed Sep 27. It may take some more time
for the staff to get comfortable with the idea of riverboarding but
the rafting manager and paddle sports director were sold on them.

Gauley Fest was awesome - more riverboarders on the river and I'm
anxious to hear who won the Animal Race? The festival Saturday night
was a ton of fun in spite of the rain - several people decided the mud
would be perfect for mud wrestling and so they went after it. If you
have a pic from your riverboarding trip on the Gauley - post 'em on
the photos section of the message board. I know there is one pic out
there of 4 boarders all surfing the same wave.

Gauley Fest was awesome - some more riverboarders this year on the
river than ever. The festival Saturday night in spite of the rain had
a ton of deals - several lucky attendees walked away with a kayak and
RipBoard raffled off a riverboard as well. The rain only made the mud
pit better and before long - Mud Wrestling - WILD. Wrestlers drew a
large crowd and soon became the main event. If you have riverboarding
pics or pics from the Festival post 'em here on the message board.

Hi.
My name's Liz. I'm up in Husum, WA, on the White
Salmon River, about 20 mins from Hood River, OR, and
an hour and 30 mins from Portland. I've been here all
summer, but I'm leaving in a couple days for WV for
Gauley season.
I will be back here in october or november for the
winter and will be staying next summer also.
I'm a rep for RipBoard, so I have boards and gear if
you don't have your own and would like to try a
RipBoard.
You can reach me at gingerwatergirl@..., or call
me at 954-495-0672.

Hi! I'm moving to the PacNW, after living in CA for many years. I discovered
Riverboarding on
the South Fork American back in 2002, have done many runs there, as well as
guide school
(to learn more about rivers) and Swift Water Rescue (SRT1) with Julie Munger
(she boarded the
Grand Canyon with 2 other women!) I trained on the lower Kern a bit and boarded
there, as
well as on the Kings and the E Fork Carson (the hot springs did not make up for
the lack of
significant whitewater and the snow melt!)
Anyway, I am looking for advice on fun runs around Portland, and for folks
interested in
coordinating trips and adventures. Please email me at jencourage@....
Thanks!
FibArk festival was a blast - people from all over - NY, TX, Costa
Rica, and other places - all tried riverboarding for the first time.
Jim Weber set a course record for riverboarding 10 miles - Sunday -
finishing in an offical time of 1 hour and 35 minutes. The kayak pro
rodeo was held for the first time under lights at night - awesome! If
you missed it this year - put it on your calendar for next year.

The FibArk (First in boating Arkansas River) whitewater festival
begins today in Salida, CO. The festival runs through Sunday.
Riverboarding demos are sponsored by InMotion365.com and will begin
Friday afternoon. This should be one of the biggest whitewater
festivals in the country so come enjoy the many activities (kayak
rodeo & slalom, 5K & 10K runs, parade, skateboard & bike
competitions...)and look for the InMotion 365 tent on the boat ramp
upstream from the 'F' Street bridge.
This weekend is a huge sports festival called the Capital One
Adventure games. As part of the festivities - Chris Washnock of
RipBoard Inc will be providing riverboarding demos. The plan is to
have extra boards and gear available on Brown's Island (tent with
RipBoard banner) - Saturday June 17. Contact Chris Washnock by e-mail
chriswashnock@... to arrange details.

Saturday May 27 is the Clear Creek Festival in Golden, CO located at
the Clear Creek Whitewater park. Events will include freestyle rodeo,
downriver boater and boardercross race. This is where the first
boardercross race was held back in 2000. Golden River Sports is the
primary sponsor of this event and will be registering competitors at
9am. The freestyle begins at 10am and the other events will follow. I
expect to the riverboarders can get organized and race at 12:30 as the
kayakers will be taking a lunch break. Come on out and enjoy the
festival.
My 18 mile ride was on the Colorado River and it included Class III-
IV rapids.

Did it last year...had my raft for support. jumped in when it was
comfortable temp. really cold in june. 4/3 wetsuit is not warm enough.
couple of good waves for surfing. couple good rapids for down river.
cold...cold...cold.
Epic trip. do it for the hot springs...
Nope...check mountainbuzz.com for flow levels for south canyon.
optimum flow range:
2850-3650..... Prime level: 3200-3500
call me when you see it come in...

Minot, i'm a Missoula riverboarder too. I was just thinking today that
its about time i surfed Brennan's wave. Have you tried it yet? I
just got back from a 5 day Main Fork of of the Salmon rafting trip but
i didn't have my board. I kept seeing every wave and thinking how
perfect it'd be on a board. I've worked and boarded with Missoula
River Guides before and worked for Serious Fun River Surfing in NZ.
Give me a buzz if you're interested in hitting some local rivers. 561-

hey man i've surfed some with a drybag on my back before... the only
thing in the bag was a video camera and some fleece and a towel for
padding/wetness protection. now i was surfing some pretty decent
waves, not holes, in a hole i think it wouldnt matter quite as much but
on a wave it kinda throws off your balance and obviously wave riding
posture with your back arched kinda sucks with a backpack on. one thing
we would do is take turns with the back pack. one person goes down
without it and surfs, as soon as you see that person wipeout we'd throw
the bag in and then that person downstream would get it. it is for sure
logistically possible though.
Hi everybody,
Excuse my English, I'm Raphael from France. 4 years ago, I made a
hydrospeed (nearly riverboard) trip with friends in Canada. Four
days all alone, with camp gear and food in one dry bag per person.
We drag our floating bag with a 4 meters rope. When there were big
waves, we caught our bag with one hand, with the rope coiled, ready
to leave it in case of emergency. On very big wave, we left the bag
just before the wave and catch it after the wave.
Wath this,

Everything is here, in french, sorry.

Thanks for the info. Checked out the article, interesting. I have extremely light weight camp gear -- as I've been an alpine climber for years. So I'm pretty sure I could fit all I need in a 20 liter dry bag for the 3-4 days down the Middle Fork. Question is, what's it like to surf waves (the whole point of the trip) with a dry bag on one's back? I'm going to test my gear here once I get some free time in a week. Also, what grade water were you running when you did the 18 miler and where was it? The Middle Fork can get pretty solid with a number of IV+'s with high water at the end of May. I don't think I'm going to do it if it's forecast above 4,500 cfs. Where are you based? I'm in Missoula~Minot
