Dear Riverboarding Brothers and Sisters,

Hi, I'm going to be coming out to Colorado for the competitions in early June
(second weekend). I'll probably be arriving by plane into Denver on June 11th
in time to practice, and then riding out by Greyhound Bus on June 14th or 15th
to catch the next weekend of competition in Idaho. I'm hoping that someone
lives close and is competing that wouldn't mind picking me up at the airport and
hauling me around. I'd like to find some accommodations or camping near the
event sites, though if someone has a couch or floor for me to crash on, that
would be cool too. Since Colorado is home to two riverboard manufacturers and
three guide services, the competitions should be a great time on and off the
river with so many potential boarders showing up to compete.

Appreciate any help and hospitality that you can show to a visiting boarder.
Also, I'll be going to Bend, OR the following weekend to compete at the Payette
River Experience there. If anyone wants to join me on a bus trip or have a
partner riding shotgun for a road trip, then let me know. My plan is to run the
bottom 5-8 miles of the North Fork Payette a day or two before that competition,
then practice the day before, compete, and then fly back from Boise, to
Charlotte, NC.

Hi we just posted a kids white water video to youtube, It plays best if you hit
the HQ high quality button and the full screen button. We usually have extra
equipment if you want to join us as the weather gets warmer.

Kids Riverboarding Video from one of our trips last summer. The Golden White
Water Park has 3 worthwhile surfing waves that can be surfed down to about 175
cfs. There is $30 camping 5 feet from the put in. Plenty of kayakers and tubers
to make it social. In this video my boys are 4 and 7.

Also worth noting, I added royalty free music from http://www.jamendo.com/ so as
not to have the video censored by the music police from WMG

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTGZKbmrE_4

This is what we do instead of school. Cheers Marty

Hey all,
Just wanted to let everyone know that the MSN Groups service will
close in February 2009. If you are a member of the Riverboarding Group
on MSN, you need to log into MSN Groups and switch over to Multiply.
This is an easy process and only takes a few minutes.
Simply log into MSN groups at
http://groups.msn.com/Riverboarding/_whatsnew.msnw
and follow the easy steps to migrate. All of your old posts, pics, and
all other info has already been transfered to the new site.

If you aren't already a member of the old MSN Riverboarding Group,
check out the new Multiply group site at http://multiply.com/groups
When you create a new account, you'll be taken to your profile page,
where you can then search for the Riverboarding Group and join.

I think that with this new site, the problems of the old MSN Group
(mostly spam) will be better. Check it out!

I'm doing newbie instruction on the Ocoee, but anyone with their own
boards and gear that wants to tag along is welcome. We'll put on at
the Olympic course around 10:30 as the water makes it down there. Will
run a few laps, then set shuttle for the bottom half of the middle
Ocoee. No reliable email access at home this week, so call 828 514 2374.

Thank you hurricane Fay! Of course this would happen during the one
week of the year when I'm taking class and can't go creeking too much.
Anyway, I'm in class in Asheville till 3:30 so I'm kind of limited,
but the French Broad is running high and within striking distance for
me for an afternoon run. More rain forecasted, so could go higher, but
could not as well (some parts upstream are dropping, others rising, so
who knows), so I'm going to take the approach of don't get too greedy
and take what I've got. I'll use the phone to check level at lunch and
make a final decision. Meet at either Asheville Mall on Tunnel road at
3:30 or at the Hot Springs takeout river right at around 4:30 or 5:00.
I won't have email during the day so leave me a voice mail at 828 514

Last weekend Kevin Yount came north to organize a race at the
Deerfield River Fest. We had a short race and then went back to the
top to run the whole run. The Dryway is class 3+ and 4. We then went
to Zoar Gap which is a class 3 rip about 50 yards long. We took turns
jumping into a hole from the rock and attempting to surf. I managed to
get in the hole 1 out of 6 attempts. I had a blast all weekend and I'm
HOOKED on boarding. Thanks for coming Kevin and thanks Shane for all
you've done.

Gary,

it was great. I started earlier in the day by doing a feature for
WSOC-TV channel 9 in Charlotte and took sports anchor Jarod Latch down
the intruction, wilderness, and big water channels. The feature will
air on Saturday night at 6:00 and should generate some interest and
help us all out. I stayed around afterwards to practice surfing for
Gorge Games, but the lightning forced me to quit early when it knocked
the pumps out of commission for the night.
I'm not sure about next week, but afterwards will be in the northwest
and northeast for a few weeks, returning the first week of August.
Maybe then!

peace,

Kevin,

Dear Northeast boarders,

Thank you for hanging in there while I've been working on getting
some competitions and activities together for your region. I really
feel like there are some nice pockets of whitewater throughout the
area and that you really just need a competition or two to showcase
the good stuff and also bring everyone together/generate some more
interest in the scene.
Now is where I need your help to make these events a success both
through your personal participation and in getting the word out to
other boarders and bringing them too.

The race at Deerfield Fest will be on July 26th at 1:00 pm. We will
meet at the top of False Tooth for a short boardercross through False
Tooth and Dragon's Tooth. We'll probably run the whole stretch
together as a group right after the race, and I'm working on something
for an after river get together.

The following Saturday, Aug 2nd will be the race on the Kennebec.
Brian has been telling everyone how great this river is for a few
years and that was a part of my desire to have some northeast
competitions, that if someone is passionate about riverboarding and
their local run, then I'd love to be a part of helping that scene to
grow. From the descriptions I've read and pictures I've seen, the run
looks like an awesome big water stretch, but not too technically
difficult. We'll meet at the takeout at 9:30 am to set shuttle and be
ready to catch the release first thing for the downriver race. I
believe our plan is to race from a few rapids above big mama down
through magic. Once the race is over, we will rush back to the start
again to get down to Big Mama for a surf competition. Brian also gave
me some recommendations for a good place to eat and socialize after
the river, so I just need to look over those again.

I also wanted to let you all know that I'll be around during the week
between those two competitions. Brent told me about a few good
rivers, but right now with the lack of rain (I feel ya, we're dry down
here in the south too), it looks like I may have to go with my back up
plan of heading across the boarder to Canada for a few days to surf
Lachine and Bus Eater rapids. Any of you that are free and would like
to come are welcome to join me on this. I'm currently working on the
logistics with driving to see if it is possible to hit both spots in
the week between and also trying to network with a riverboarding
company, local river surfers or kayakers, and possibly arrange someone
with a jet ski to do tow-ins. We'll see, but just wanted to let you
all know that the option was on the table.

I will get back with more specifics such as after river meals, etc.
I need all of you to make this a success and am counting on you all to
show up at one or both events if possible. If we can get the minimum
number of participants, then there will be prizes in the form of
Facelevel store gift certificates for the top three racers or surfers.
Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions or ideas
about how to make this as huge as possible. Both of these rivers seem
accessible for beginners, but still exciting enough for intermediates
or advanced riders. I want to do everything possible to get people
out, and if you have any friends that have boarded with you before,
but might not have their own board, I'll have an extra board or two in
tow that they could use for the competition. All you have to do is
call me to reserve them. Also, although many races don't allow
bodyboards, due to the fact that a lot of people up there do use them,
bodyboards will be allowed for these two competitions. The only thing
that I'll require is that everyone have the minimum of helmet, pfd,
and fins. Also I know that a few people that are local to the
Kennebec don't like to surf with a pfd, and I'm not going to be a
stickler on that since they know what's downstream and are comfortable
with that, but I'd still ask that they wear helmets for the surfing
competition. That only applies to the surfing competition, and pfd's
are required on the downriver race.

Looking forward to meeting and riding with you all,

Kevin Yount

Friday, me and Bryce are driving up to the "Upper Yough" area to camp,
which we plan to run on Saturday. We will try to have shuttle set and
ready to get in the water by noon, so we can catch the first of the
release as it hits the put in because you don't won't to dally and run
out of water.
Sunday, we plan to hit the whitewater park in Maryland, or the The
Adventure Sports Center Int'l as its properly called. It releases
class II-III in the morning, and class III-IV in the afternoon. We're
going to get there at 1:00 pm for the good stuff and stay till they
shut down at 6:00 pm. Cost is 20 dollars and you need to call them at
877 300 2724 to make a reservation.
Monday is up in the air depending on what is running (area is supposed
to get some rain over the weekend). Likely candidates include the Top
Yough (dam release), Tygart Valley (Valley Falls), or Fish Ladder
channel of the Potomac.
Call me if interested in any of this, and I'll probably know more
about where I'm camping, etc.

Pigeon race cancelled tomorrow due to Cocke county not allowing it,
but I'm still going to do a few laps on it tomorrow, Saturday, June
7th. I plan to camp up there and try to do three to four runs if I
have the shuttles in place. 828 514 2374

Shane,
turnout was low for the New, but we still had a great time. I think I
like the New better at 5 feet instead of 3, but each level has it's
perks. The following day, me and Bryce from Fayetteville, NC checked
out Sandstone Falls further upstream of the New River Gorge (just
south of I-64). While most of the vertical lines needed higher water
for a favorable run, there was an awesome, steep slide and double
ledge combo on river right that was a blast. In fact that reminds me
that I should post a few pics of that run, right now.

Gary,

Water levels OK - had the first group of the season out Monday - a
team of adventure racers training for Primal Quest. One team member
lives in Raleigh and plans to try more riverboarding at USNWC. This
weekend Colorado Kayak Supply has a big sale to kickoff the
whitewater season here in Colorado. It should be a great year with
all the snow Colorado has and it starts melting.
