I like the Cascade helmet. Go to cascade lacrosse helmets (http://www.sporthelmets.com/)  and then direct yourself to the whitewater ones. You can get a chin guard or face mask - I got the face mask - if you want. As far as fins, I got Forcefins - the Ripforce model. (http://www.forcefins.com/)  They are made for surf swimming but the nice thing about them is that you can adjust the size. So if yu have someone else trying things out, you don't have to get another set of fins. They are a little pricey though. I got 5mm booties and fin leashes (an essential) from http://store.yahoo.com/ebodyboarding/accessories.html. And finally, I got my wetsuit from Aquaflite (http://aquaflite.com/farmerjohns.html). I suggest you get the kevlar knees.
That wraps it up. I hope that helps.
