's The Best Way To Warm-Up?<br><br>The most common
or popular method of warming up is stretching.
<br>However, it is well known that in order to have an
effective stretch, <br>the muscles must already be warmed
up especially in the case of <br>static stretching,
which is typically recommended. But, if you <br>already
warm-up prior to doing stretches, why is it necessary to
do <br>stretching?<br><br>Many experts recommend
stretching before a strength or cardio <br>workout. Rarely
asked is how much stretching is needed and what <br>is
the purpose of the stretching. Keep in mind that
stretching is <br>used to either 1) increase the range of
motion in the joint, or 2) <br>regain the normal range
of motion …….<br>Read full text here:

of Andy Roddick's spectacular performance against

vital component of preparation often <br>overlooked
during tournament competition. Those of us who
<br>witnessed this match saw Roddick's chances of winning
almost <br>dashed when he developed severe cramps at the
3 hour and 35 <br>minute mark. From the 8th game on
in the fifth set, Roddick <br>exhibited the morbid
look of a twisted contortionist each time he
<br>seized up between points. Luckily, Roddick's
overpowering serve <br>helped him end points quickly and
overcome his distressed <br>physical state, yet, most
athletes at some time have felt the <br>nightmare Roddick
was exposed to: a muscle twinges, trembles <br>and
prepares to go into an uncontrolled spasm - otherwise
known <br>as a muscle cramp. Once these cramps appear
rarely do you have <br>the ability to finish the match.
The most notable and widely viewed <br>case of the
disastrous effects of cramps was seen at the 1995 U.S.

USING PHYSICAL-PSYCHOLOGICAL PORTRAITS TO IMPROVE
<br>YOUR CHANCE OF WINNING<br> <br> Proper physical and
technical preparation is vital for achieving high <br>level
performance in the sport of tennis. But no matter what level
<br>you compete at- league play, high school, college or
professional, <br>psychological factors can play an important
role in attaining <br>sporting excellence. Years ago,
Soviet studies done using athletes <br>in various sports
and at all levels of proficiency discovered that one
<br>out of every three athletes performed below his or

and anxiety associated with <br>competition. To help
combat nervous tension and reduce the <br>chance of
sub-par performance, a number of specific psychological

Tip of the Week: Hit high over the net <br>by
Tony Lance, Contributing Editor www.tennis.com<br>
<br>May 28, 2001 -- Roland Garros begins today and most
of us will watch as much as possible on television.
Although TV is a great way to see the geometry of a tennis
match, it is misleading because of an optical illusion.
While it appears that groundstrokes sail just over the
top of the net, that's not the case at all. <br>If
you've ever seen a professional match up close,
especially on clay, you realize that the ball clears the net
by six feet or more most of the time. You will have
more success if you use the air space above the net.
Need convincing? Here's why: <br><br>The net is not a
barrier: Follow Gustavo Kuerten's example by hitting
topspin strokes so the ball clears the net by six to
eight feet. The ball will fall safely into the court.
<br>Height translates into depth: You can gain distance by
sending the ball on a high trajectory. When Arantxa
Sanchez-Vicario wants more depth she doesn't hit harder, she
simply clears the net by an extra foot or two.
<br><br>High balls are harder to return: The higher you hit
over the net, the higher the ball will bounce on the
other side. Balls that skim the net fall right into
your opponent's strike zone. Force your opponent to
either hit shoulder-high balls, hit on the rise, or move
back and take the ball as it drops. Either way you'll
make it harder for your opponent.<br>You can take your
game to new heights, and reduce errors, by clearing
the net by a few more feet.

TIP<br>*****************************************************************<br>Hold
Your Breath To Hit A Better Shot!<br>Proper
breathing (controlled and rhythmic inhalation and
<br>exhalation) is essential to playing well; it relaxes you
during periods <br>of stress and allows your muscles to
work in a well-coordinated <br>fashion. Developing a
synchronized, smooth breathing pattern in <br>between points
offers many obvious benefits, and because of this it
<br>is often assumed and recommended to do the same
while <br>executing your stroke. Yet, following this
advice and applying the <br>same breathing pattern when
hitting your shots can be detrimental <br>to your
performance. Why? Because studies that have measured
<br>breathing synchronized with film analysis have shown that
athletes <br>inhale then hold their breath during the
entire execution phase. <br>They exhale only well into
the follow-through portion of the stroke! <br> <br>By
holding your breath the core portion of your body (the
chest, <br>stomach and back) become a stabilized unit in
which the arms and <br>legs can move about to generate
force. For example, try pushing a <br>heaving object
without having a solid base to help you resist from
<br>sliding as seen if you were trying to push a person
heavier then <br>you, a refrigerator, or even a car. The
result is that you will <br>actually <br>be pushed or
slide backwards because you are not able to
<br>overcome inertia to get the object moving (Remember
Newton’s <br>law – a body at rest tends to stay at rest
while a body in motion <br>tends to stay in motion). On
the other hand, if you can brace your <br>body so
that it will not move you can now overcome<br>Read

Here are 15 basic facts about racquets. This
information provided by the United States Racquet Stringers
Association. <br><br> <br><br>These facts are presented as
generalities. While a stiffer frame generates more power, a
stiff frame badly strung may generate less power than a
more flexible frame properly strung for power players.
While a heavier frame generates more power, it can also
decrease maneuverability.<br><br>1. A heavier frame
generates more power. <br><br>2. A heavier frame vibrates
less. <br><br>3. A heavier frame has a larger
sweetspot. <br><br>4. A stiffer frame generates more power.
<br><br>5. A stiffer frame has a larger sweetspot.
<br><br>6. A stiffer frame transmits more of the shock load
to the arm than a more flexible frame. <br><br>7. A
stiffer frame provides a more uniform ball response
across the entire string plane. <br><br>8. A larger
frame generates more power. <br><br>9. A larger frame
is more resistant to twisting. <br><br>10. A larger
frame has a larger sweetspot.<br><br>11. Larger frames
break strings sooner due to the string
lengths.<br><br>12. Longer frames have higher swing weight than the
same frames that are shorter hence the longer frames
are less maneuverable.<br><br>13. Longer frames
generate more power than the same frame that is
shorter.<br><br>14. It is recommended by the USRSA that widebody
frames use multifilament strings (i.e. "soft" strings)
or gut to compensate for some of the stiff
attributes hence better playability.<br><br>15. It is
recommended by the USRSA to string widebody frames at lower
tension for better playability and to help keep strings
from breaking too soon

New in 2001, the FCTF’s Residential Tennis
Program is reaching out to residents of apartment
complexes, single-family home neighborhoods, and
condominiums to develop tennis programs in their communities.
The FCTF and the USTA Florida Section are working
together to structure a program that fits the needs of
each community, to identify and train coaches, and to
develop a USA Team Tennis program designed to be played
at facilities with 2 or fewer courts. Providing the
opportunity to get involved in the lifetime sport of tennis
to the people on the First Coast who are not private

you live in a community with a few tennis courts and
want help getting a tennis program going, let us know!
