My wife, reading over my shoulder, brings up the example of Bartitsu. A
"brand new style" that was cobbled together from judo, la canne, and
whatever else was available at the time, then shamelessly named after the
cobbler. Bartitsu is a perfectly good martial art with modern adherents, so
I think this is a great example of how the MA world works.

My wife goes off in a huff, grumbling that Bartitsu is a terrible name.
Every new art will have it's detractors.
