1. The White Bear Lake Fall Ultimate Team needs more women. If you are interested or know of a female student interested in participating, we would love to have them join us for the Fall League season.
2. Any and all active WBL HS students all invited to practice with us. You don't need to be on the team. Dust off your cleats and join your friends. The practice schedule is listed at http://www.wblultimate.org
3. For those of us on the team, we will be purchasing Orange t-shirts for $5 from the White Bear Lake Area School District Community Services and Recreation
Department. Please bring your $5 and t-shirt size to practice.
I wanted to let you all know that there is summer pickup every saturday at 11:00 AM at Bossard park (a little to the south of Sunrise). We switched it from 10:00 because people were too tired to get up and hopefully more people come now. Bring everybody including people who don't have experience because the purpose of this is to have fun and get experience/ learn, not have an intense game.
What to Bring: what you'd normally bring. Or just don't bring anything and I wont care. bring a person too.
I hope you come, Sunshine Bears...
Oh, and Black Bears, your attendence has been terrible. Dylan + his team, where are you at?
A-team bears : Its 11 now so you can get up (Brett). And you can frolf later, god.
Oh, and make sure you tell everyone. Not everyone reads their e-mail and not everyone is in this group so spread the word about this and fall league.

Hey Bears-
Summer is in full swing and I hope that you're all playing disc on a regular basis. The more you play now means the less we'll have to work on basic throwing and catching in the spring.
Three things for you today: YCC, Fall, Coldfront Cooldown.
First, the UPA YCC tournament is coming up on August 8th & 9th. We are in need of volunteers and could really use your help. Give me a shout if you're able to help, even just for a couple hours. PS: I am the Volunteer Coordinator, so it would be really great if WBL had a few of our own out there helping..
Second, White Bear Lake has fielded a Fall team twice in the past. But we need a good turnout to make this happen for 2009. Second, we'll need an adult present at every game. Sadly, I will not
be available on Sundays this Fall. We need to collect the names of players immediately to sign up. If you or someone you know would like to play on the White Bear Lake Fall Team, please contact me right away. We'll need 15 players committed by Monday August 10th. The cost will be $20 per player and games will be at various times on Sundays from 11am-ish to 4pm-ish. Games will begin September 18th and go until November 8th. See http://mnultimate. org/fall/ TCUL_Fall_ League/Home. html for more information about TCUL Fall League.
Third, Eden Priaire High School is putting on a high school tournament called "Coldfront Cooldown" The tournament is scheduled for September 27th & 28th. Again, if you are available to play, please let me know. Teams from South, Southwest, Hopkins, and Eden Prairie
are likely going to participate and so should we. I will be available to coach for the Coldfront Cooldown tournament. Again, we need 15 players committed to sign up for this event. I'll need a full list of committed players by Monday, August 17th.
See you on the field!

Jeff! Next Level Ultimate Camp
Jeff-
Hope to start of your summer is going well.
We have heavily increased the discount for players who send multiple players to our camp this summer. For high school teams sending 4 or more players, we are now taking roughly $200 off EACH of their admission prices, bringing the cost down to $450.
Our focus this summer is now to bring on as many players as possible at an extremely low cost, in hopes that we can build a solid base going into the future. We will likely be losing money this summer, but hope that a successful camp will allow us to remain in strong form going into the future.
With the size of White Bear's program, I know that some players would be interested in this price reduction. Please let me know if you have any questions. The camp registration form is up on our website and very easy to fill out.
If anyone picked up a Target bag containing a grey polar fleece jacket & tournament shirt, it's Eric Anderson's. Please give to Eric or call 651-426-6345. Thanks.

The Orange and Black teams will have two tournaments coming up. First, on April 25, there will be a one-day tournament called the St. Cloud Face Off. The tournament will take place at Whitney Park in
St. Cloud and will likely take place between 8:00AM and 4:00PM.
The second tournament is a two-day tournament on May 2-3, called the St. Cloud Granite City Classic. This tournament is also held at Whitney Park. Saturday is likely to be 8:00AM to 4:00PM. Sunday's play is likely to be 8:00AM to 2:00PM. Due to this weekend falling on the same weekend as White Bear Lake Prom, we will consolidate all
remaining players into one White Bear Lake team.
PARENTS
Ultimate
tournaments are a lot of fun. You get to stand on the sideline with
other spectators and the players. I think it's that closeness to the
players that makes it such a special sport to watch. A typical
tournament day will have your child's team playing 2-4 games... yes,
that's 2-4 games in one day. There will be 30-90 minutes between games,
so you can usually drive to get lunch if you didn't bring food to the
field. Tournaments are usually Saturday and Sunday, and Sunday there
are usually single elimination games, so only the winning teams
continue playing up to the finals.
But a day of Ultimate can be challenging for a spectator if you are not prepared. Here are a few things you should bring:
a folding chair
a hat
sun block lotion (and use it often)
some food and drinks (unless it's Nationals, there usually are no food or drinks available on the fields)
a
camera (if it's a small one, use it for close-ups of the players -
action shots are usually not very good unless you have a telephoto lens)
a video camera is great to bring. You'll love watching them later!
If you are in a position to help with a few team supplies, here's what many Ultimate players like during a tournament:
ice (filling up an ice chest or cooler is best)
gatorade (the tournament usually supplies water)
fruit (oranges and bananas - and if you really want to go all out, cut the oranges into quarters)
healthy snacks - perhaps pistachio nuts, bagels, peanut butter and bread. Ask your child what his/her team likes.

There will be a Pop skills clinic for high school girls' ultimate players. The clinic is this Saturday, April 18 from 9am - 1pm at Nokomis. Pop is THE premiere Women's UPA Club team in Minnesota!
This clinic is intended for players new and old. The clinic will be focusing on the fundamentals of throwing, pivoting, marking and cutting. I've attached a registration flyer with all the details.
If anyone has any questions they can contact Jill Oesterreich Kiener at jillastrike@....

With one week of games now in the books, I wanted to touch base with each of you. Our program is off to a great start, due in large part to our coaches Dylan Ballantine, Amanda Smullen, Ian Bartling, and Kenny Auger. Be sure to thank your coaches and let them know that you appreciate their time and efforts.

The Minnesota High School Ultimate League is happy to announce the league schedule for the first five weeks of play. Games for the final two weeks will be announced by the Saturday, May 9.
The mission of the league is to teach the rules of Ultimate and to learn how to play the game. In keeping with this mission, the league game schedule was constructed with similar skill level in mind. The game schedule can be found at http://mnhsultimate.org.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
1) Coaches, be sure to verify your team contact information immediately. Team contact information can be found at http://mnhsultimate.org/Teams.aspx. Be sure to send any updates to
MNHSUltimateExecBoard@yahoogroups.com.
2) Teams must have an adult present at every game. Please take the time to abide by UPA sanctioning rules and fill out a UPA Chaperone Form. http://mnhsultimate.org/2009/Chaperone_Form_V3.0.pdf. These forms must mailed to the UPA: 4730 Table Mesa Dr. / Suite I-200C / Boulder, CO 80305.
4) Please proactively contact your opposing coach 24-48 hours before your game. Be sure to cover the basics, such as home field directions, jersey color, and game time start. Discuss any
restrictions or special needs. For example, beginning teams may not yet be ready to face a Zone Defense. Be sure to discuss a communications plan in the event of poor weather.
5) Coaches should consider safety above all else. Therefore, the league makes the following recommendations: a. Coaches must have student Medical Authorization Forms with them at all times. b. Coaches should a have a fully stocked first aid kit, including ice or ice packs. c. Know the guidelines for playing in stormy weather. www.upa.org/lightning_guidelines. Flash-to-Bang: Begin counting when a lightning flash is sighted. Stop counting when the associated thunder is heard. If the count is 30 seconds or less, players should take cover within the safety of their automobiles. Wait at least 30 minutes after the last flash of lightning or sound of thunder before
resuming
play.
6) Think Green. Be sure to recycle and be sure to leave the fields cleaner than when you found them.
Have a fun and safe Ultimate season!

During this last captains meeting, we spent some time brainstorming what we
thought were the essential basics of catching a disc. We think this is
important for everyone to review- from the first time hucker to the most
experienced coach on our team. Most anyone can manage to catch a dump, tossed
lazily from five feet away. However, the principles behind catching a well
thrown, up-field forehand or backhand are much more complicated. Beyond this,
they're important, and well worth the reminder before the season gets in full
swing. The biggest reason for this is safety- the disc is what you use to
score, it is your baby, and it is also 175g of hard plastic flying directly
towards your chest. We want everyone to feel safe while playing this sport. We
will avoid complications such as catching a hammer or laying out for now, and
will perhaps cover this later in the season. For now, let's explore some
basics:
-First and foremost, catching the disc is about focus and anticipation. A very
common mistake, one that I still find myself making, is to start thinking about
something else right before I catch the disc. This could be many things- the
throw I'm about to make, the wind or rain, the arc of the disc, the dinner
waiting for me at home, or the defender right on my heels. It's very easy to
get distracted, and we all do it. And then the disc hits us square in the
hands, we fumble a little bit, and what may have been an easy catch gets away
from us. So, we need to remind ourselves that no matter what happens, keep both
eyes on the disc until you have COMPLETELY STOPPED ROTATION.
-Your hands should remain soft when catching. This is the anticipation piece of
all of this. I hope this isn't a stretch of an analogy, but think of this like
jumping on a bed. A mattress is a relatively solid surface, but it naturally
still has some give to it, some cushion. If you are falling towards a mattress,
your fall is broken ever so slightly by the fact that the mattress moves
downward with you- it compresses, and in a way, it anticipates. Think again of
this same fall, but this time, there's no mattress. Instead, you land directly
on a hardwood floor. The floor has no cushion to it, it has no anticipation.
This must be the same for your hands- the disc can't hit a brick wall, it needs
to feel a little cushion. Please, no matter how cool it looks, catch the disc
with two hands whenever possible.
-Speaking of using two hands, think very quickly about in what position your
hands are in when you catch a disc above your head. Now- what if the disc was
right at your chest, and what if it is below your waist? This sounds like a
no-brainer, but it really is quite important. When you are catching a disc
above your head, your thumbs should be facing down. When the disc is low, your
thumbs should be facing up. The ideal situation is when the disc is right at
your chest. In this instance, we can make a pancake catch, or catching it with
one hand above the disc, and one below. This is the most efficient way of
stopping the rotation, and also has the highest catch percentage.
-We've talked a little bit about what to do with your hands, and the actual
mechanics of catching a disc. However, we are playing a sport, and with sport
comes strategy, which means this is bound to get a little more complicated than
playing catch in the backyard. We want to focus on ALWAYS being active until
the catch is made. Your body plays a huge role in ultimate- you use it to
maintain your personal space between you and your defender when catching a disc.
You should focus on jumping a little bit if it means getting the core of your
body in front of the disc. Remember, the highest catch percentage is when the
disc hits you in the chest. Most importantly, remember to run THROUGH the disc.
This means that you don't want to wait for the disc to come to you, because this
gives your defender a precious few seconds to adjust and block the throw. Even
if it means gaining a few less yards, run towards the disc to catch it with the
core of your body, using your shoulders to maintain your space.
-Finally, I want to cover the importance of your teammates in all of this. You
must always be communicating with your teammates, both on and off the field.
Someone off the field may alert you to an approaching defender. If you make an
exceptional cut, and this has given you some space between you and your
defender, let the handler know! The handler could very well be looking
somewhere else, trying to force a throw that isn't open. Help them out, clap
your hands, whatever you've got to do.
I hope this helps a little bit, whether it is as a vehicle of education, or as a
nice refresher going in to practice tomorrow. Please let me know if you have
any questions!

The 2008 UPA Youth Club Championships will be held at the National Sports Center in Blaine, MN on August 9th and 10th.
The UPA YCC is a tournament featuring the best youth players in the country. Eight Open, eight Mixed, and eight Girls teams from cities around the nation have been invited to attend. Minnesota
will be putting together all-star teams to compete against teams from Seattle, New England, and more.
Once again, the Minnesota High School Ultimate League will be represented by one team in each of the Divisions; Mixed, Girls and Open. This year all three teams will be based in the Twin Cities. Boy's tryouts will supply males to the Boy's team and the Mixed team. Girl's tryouts will supply females to the Girl's team and the Mixed team.
Boy's Tryouts: Saturday, June 7th from 10am-1pm, & Tuesday, June 10th from 6pm-8:30pm. Girl's Tryouts: Sunday, June 8th from 4pm-7pm, & Monday, June 9th from 6pm-8:30pm. All tryouts at Lake Nokomis. (To clarify - there are no separate Mixed tryouts - to try out for any team, go to sessions of your
gender).
Questions & Answers
Q: What should I bring to tryouts?
A: White and dark shirts, a disc, water, cleats, weather-appropriate clothing, and yourself!
Q: Who is eligible to tryout?
A: All players under 19 years old as of June 1, 2008 who played in the MNHS league in 2007 or 2008.
Q: Why should I play?
A: The YCC teams let you play Ultimate with the best young players in the area and get coached by experienced leaders in the Ultimate community. You will make friends, get better at Ultimate, and have the opportunity to compete for a national championship!
Q: Do I have a choice of which team I try out for?
A: Players will have the option to express a preference. There are no guarantees, but the coaches will do their best to accommodate preferences.
Q: What if I really want to be on the same team as my friend?
A: Players will have the option to express a preference to play with one friend, but again there are no guarantees (it will help
if both players put down each other). But remember: if you make a team, you will have many friends on the team - you just might not know all of them yet.
Q: What does the season entail?
A: After tryouts, all teams will be practicing twice weekly until the YCC tournament on August 9th and 10th. There will also be one practice tournament, the Minnesota Ultimate Disc Invite (MUDI), on July 26-27 in Maple Plain, MN. [So approximately 16 practice and 2 tournaments. ]
Q: What if I can't make the YCC tournament on August 9th and 10th?
A: Then you probably can't play on a YCC team. However, there are other summer Ultimate opportunities such as pickup, leagues, and club teams.
Q: What if I can't some practices and/or MUDI?
A: You are still encouraged to tryout. Please be upfront with the coaches about your conflicts - if the coaches decide you will still benefit the team despite some absences, then you could still make a team.
Q: Who are the coaches?
A: Girl's Coaches: Lori Van Holmes, John Sandahl.
Boy's Coaches: Eric Enge, Louis Abramowski, Chris Van Holmes, Chuck Hippman.
Mixed Coaches: Dave Klink, Lauren
Gloede, Mike Berseth, Sarah Solarz.
Q: What if I can't attend one or both tryouts?
A: If you can make at least one tryout, then you are fine. If you can't make either tryout, you can still possibly be on a team. Contact coach Dave Klink (daveklink@gmail. com) as soon as possible - (very) preferably before tryouts.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: There will be a fee for playing on the team (to cover jerseys, shorts, hats, tournament entry fees, and other intangibles) , which is yet to be determined. If you cannot
afford the fee, you can talk privately with a coach - there is financial assistance available for those in need.
Q: What if I have other questions?
A: Email coach Dave Klink (daveklink@gmail. com) with questions about the tryout process or other basic YCC information.

I am sorry to report that due to a lack of interest, White Bear Lake Ultimate will NOT be playing in the Twin Cities Fall Ultimate League.
Each of you should be going out and throwing with you brothers, sisters and friends.
It would be great if we had people showing up at Sunday 6:30pm pickup again. Due to a tournament in Milwaukee, I will not be available this Sunday. Aside from the weekends I have tournaments, I would be willing to commit to playing on Sunday nights. Will you commit?
