The Winchester Star
From Star Staff Reports

WINCHESTER — Part of the 82nd Shenandoah Apple Blossom
Festival's slogan is "Go Local, Go Bloom," so it's only
fitting that Virginia native Ward Burton will be the sports marshal for
the celebration.

Burton, who debuted in NASCAR in 1994, owns an impressive racing resume.

He has five Nextel Cup wins, including the 2002 Daytona 500, as well as
24 Top 5 finishes. He finished in the Top 10 in the final NASCAR Winston
Cup Point standings in 1999 and 2000.

Burton and his brother Jeff grew up racing against each other on their
hometown track in South Boston.

Festival President Elaine Aikens said Burton's name should be
familiar to area NASCAR fans.

"We know NASCAR has a pretty huge following here in Virginia,"
she said. "We're trying to celebrate those in Virginia, those
close to us and celebrate their success. We wanted someone to appeal to
people and come to the Sports Breakfast. I think he will have a great
deal to offer to those who come."

Festival Executive Director John Rosenberger said NASCAR's wide
popularity makes Burton an attractive guest. "NASCAR is very big
around here so that's always a plus. It's always a good
connection and they're running in Richmond that weekend, so it ties
us to a popular sport."

Burton, who still resides in South Boston, has always been a fan
favorite and that's why he remains as popular today as he was at the
peak of his racing career.

Recently, he moved his second career into high gear as a
"full-throttle conservationist" and that has led to his
"unofficial semi-retirement" from racing because he devotes so
much time and energy to conservation causes.

Burton and his nonprofit organization The Ward Burton Wildlife
Foundation are pioneers in environmental education and advocacy,
resource protection, and habitat restoration.

The foundation has been recognized by leaders at every level of
government and has worked with several leading conservation
organizations to develop state-of-the-art environmental engineering
programs.

Burton has committed to global environmental policy issues from
renewable energy to programs enabling landowners to protect their land
and pass it down from generation to generation with minimal financial
impact.

He also speaks regularly on these topics at the state and national level
and offers advice to government leaders about environmental policies.

When he's not involved with the foundation, Burton spends time at
his hometown speedway, where his 16-year-old son Jeb just debuted in
stock-car racing.

In addition to being the featured speaker at the festival's Sports
Breakfast May 2, Burton will appear at several luncheons May 1.

He will also be introduced at the Coronation of the festival queen May 1
and will later participate in the Firefighters' Parade.

Burton will make a joint appearance with Curtis Fleming at the "Got
milk?" tent following the Sports Breakfast in the Winchester Moose
Lodge on Cork Street.

Burton, whose appearance at the festival will be sponsored by "Got
milk?" and the American Dairy Farmers (and coordinated by Jack and
Johnny Hardesty), will also appear in the Grand Feature Parade May 2.

Revved up about a cause
By Harold Raker
The Daily Item
February 21, 2009 07:37 pm

— Ward Burton would like to see every youngster get the same
opportunities that he had. And the 2002 Daytona 500 winner is not
talking about winning NASCAR races.

Rather Burton is concerned that many of the youth of today do not know
what it is like to enjoy outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing.

His NASCAR success — five Nextel Cup wins and 356 Cup starts — gave
Burton the resources and the voice to try to do something about it. In
1996, he founded the nonprofit Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation, an
organization aimed at providing outdoors opportunities to the future
hunters and fishermen.

Burton, who made an appearance last week at the Eastern Sports and
Outdoor Show in Harrisburg, is working through the school system in his
native Virginia, something that may take more work to accomplish in
Pennsylvania, where most school districts have done away with the
Pennsylvania Game Commission's hunter education programs.

Recalling a recent outing with a seventh grade class from a Virginia
middle school, Burton said, "You would not believe the percentage of
kids who had never been fishing, or never had seen a beaver swamp or
didn't recognize a raccoon track on a bank, just simple common things."

He said he is concerned about the loss of the rural culture which, he
said, is responsible for today's young people having what he called
"nature deficit disorder."

He said, "They don't understand the things that we take for granted
because of the way that we were brought up."
Burton said schools should be teaching children about their environment
right along with world history.

"My children know, but there are other kids that are not being
influenced that way and it's really scary when you think about it," he
said. "Who is going to carry on the tradition for us down the road. We
have to keep up the fight and it's got to be done through the school
system."

Burton said organizations like his are doing all they can but they are
never going to reach the masses without going into the school system.

Pennsylvania Game Commission spokesman Jerry Feaser said the reason the
hunter education courses disappeared from the schools was that the
schools, first in urban areas and then throughout the state, either
forced the agency's hand by requiring them to sign waivers guarding them
from lawsuits or by banning weapons from school grounds.
"It was an unintended consequence," Feaser said.

In Virginia, Burton said, the programs are being run by volunteers, of
which he is one. "There are a whole hell of a lot of us out there who
care about our natural resources and our environment and who care about
the next generation," he said.
The South Boston, Va., native said he had great role models as a
youngster, primarily his grandfather and father, and he has passed those
traditions onto his own children.

Burton says that although he loves all kinds of outdoor activities and
is an avid trapper, he gets more enjoyment from the thrill of others,
especially his children.
"When my older son Jeb was 9, he killed his first wild turkey. When I
was 9, you didn't see wild turkey. But having him bag his first turkey
with the same gun that I was brought up on, watching that and just
coming out and teaching him how to clean it and all that, that was a lot
more endurable (memory) than if I'd have done it myself," he said.

"I've always had two passions in life. One was racing. One was outdoors.
Growing up racing go-karts as a child in the summer I did everything I
could to get out of school and (that included) hunting, and playing in
the woods in the winter," he said.
"When I started having some success in racing, I started trying to
figure out how to tie that into the responsibility I feel like we all
have for the outdoors. We all have a responsibility to take care of the
natural resources," he said.

Burton is not involved in racing at the moment, but has not ruled out a
return to the sport, even this season. He is also helping son Jeb, now
16, pursue a racing career.

Nevertheless, he will never forsake what he believes to be his duty to
promote the care of the environment.
"I owe a lot to a lot of people for having success in racing and I may
go back into racing sometime in the near future. But, I always held
racing was a career and outdoors was a lifetime endeavor. (The outdoors)
is not a career, it is a lifetime passion," he said.

Burton said that if he had not had success in racing, he would probably
be living in a log cabin somewhere. "I would be roughing it a little bit
more than I do now. The wife and kids don't like to rough it as much as
I do," he said with a laugh.

Even though the height of Burton's success is, for the time being,
behind him, he said that the foundation is solid and no longer depends
on his success in motorsports.
"No endeavor can live depending on a personality or an individual. It
has to be a cause," he said.

Burton's foundation has been responsible for taking numerous children,
many of them with illnesses, into the outdoors.
Moreover, Burton has lent his time and expertise to other organizations
with similar goals.
"Certainly mine is not the only one out there and it's not the only one
that's got a good cause, so if we all work together, we can all be
strong and make a difference," he said.

Burton has had his conflicts with those who oppose his views, most
notably People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
"They live in la la land. They live in concrete jungles and they don't
understand where their ancestors came from," Burton said. "Their
ancestors would not have made it if it had not been for fishing and
using the natural resource.
"And to tell me that this black belt that I've got on is something wrong
because it's leather, I think they are definitely barking up a tree that
I think most Americans don't have any sympathy for."

Burton is a member of the National Rifle Association, the antithesis of
PETA, but he concedes, "Sometimes you have to have extremists on one
side and extremists on the other."

He added, "If you could get those folks out and let them walk in my
moccasins for a day, they would see it is a whole lot more than just
harvesting game. They would see that from being influenced to hunt and
fish and do the outdoor activities that your role models taught you to
do, you had so much fun, it turned you into a conservationist when you
got older.
"I get enjoyment in trying to make a difference and having fun outdoors,
and you've always had a good day whether your bagged (game) or not," he
said.

As for gun rights, Burton said he is not too concerned about it because,
"I don't feel like they are going to make all of us criminals. They are
certainly not going to get the ones I have or the ones I am about to
get, and I don't think you or your neighbors are going to give up their
handguns or their rifles, either."

But Burton might just be a little more difficult to catch.

Texas A&M, Former NASCAR Driver Collaborating On Disabled Veterans
Center
Posted: 11:01 AM Feb 13, 2009

Students in a Texas A&M University architecture-for-health studio have
teamed up with a former NASCAR driver to design facilities for a
rehabilitation camp in Virginia created especially for disabled veterans
and their families.

The students' designs will be unveiled on campus at 2 p.m. Monday (Feb.
16) in the College of Architecture's Wright Gallery. The gallery is on
the second floor of the Langford "A" Building.

The veterans' camp, known as "The Cove," will provide opportunities for
hunting, camping, canoeing and other outdoor activities. The project is
being undertaken by the Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation, an organization
founded by Ward Burton, a 17-year veteran of the NASCAR circuit and
winner of the 2002 Daytona 500.

"Many service members and their families face extreme emotional, mental
and physical challenges during the many years it takes to recover from
their wounds," said Burton. "The camp will be designed specifically for
injured veterans and their families, using Mother Nature's natural
elements to promote a positive recovery and give these families the
opportunity to explore their potential."

Organizations teaming with Burton's foundation on the camp project
include the Joshua Tree Foundation, a civic organization based in
Florida, and The Coalition to Salute America's Heroes, a group created
to assist severely wounded and disabled veterans and their families.

The camp design project kicked off Jan. 26, when Burton met via a
conference call with students to detail his thoughts about the various
buildings he envisions on the camp's 300-acre site in southern Virginia.
Burton said he wants the facility to have "a country feel" while
utilizing the state-of-the-art "green" technologies and sustainable
design. The complex, he said, will be anchored by a large, multipurpose
building to be used for dining, socializing, conferences, group
counseling and team-building activities. He wants the building to
contain informational exhibits about military history and outdoor
conservation.

Additionally, Burton asked for a lodge with private quarters capable of
housing up to eight veterans with their families, as well as an outdoor
pavilion, a garage and a barn.
"The students were encouraged to create a secure environment that
conveys a sense of trust for the veterans," says George Mann, holder of
the Skaggs-Sprague Endowed Chair in Health Facilities Design at Texas
A&M, who oversees the students' work. "They were also asked to utilize
natural materials and design with long-term sustainability in mind."

The project site, one of Burton's favorite childhood haunts, is renowned
for its plentiful wildlife and majestic natural scenery, including more
than eight miles along the picturesque Staunton River.

To prepare for the project and gain insight into the long-term recovery
process, students visited with U.S. Army veteran Jorge DeLeon, a
spokesman for The Coalition to Salute America's Heroes.
While serving in Afghanistan, an anti-tank mine claimed one of DeLeon's
legs and severely injured the other. His injury was followed by a
lengthy recovery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.,
and he now wears a computer-controlled prosthetic leg.

The architecture students also discussed post-traumatic stress disorder
with Chris Colenda, dean of medicine at the Texas A&M Health Science
Center, and they learned about the challenges of trauma recovery from
Kathryn Kotrla, associate dean of the Texas A&M Health Science Center
College of Medicine campus in Round Rock.

Joining Mann in the direction of the architecture-for-health studio are
Joseph J. McGraw, professor emeritus; Kazu Okamoto, an assistant
professor and visiting scholar from the University of Tokyo and the
Kajima Corporation; Ruka Okamoto, visiting scholar; Susan Rodiek, the
Ronald L.Skaggs Endowed Chair of Health Facilities Design; and Charles
Culp, associate professor of architecture.

Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation hosts Wounded Warrior Event
Wounded Soliders attend outdoor retreat

The Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation (WBWF) hosted its 2nd Wounded
Warrior event in December. Many soldiers who have fought in the War on
Terror now fight another tough battle back at home. Soldiers that are
severely wounded battle physical wounds, emotional troubles,
joblessness, family tribulations, limited medical support, etc. The
WBWF has developed a program to help these Wounded Warriors.

Four wounded soldiers attended a multi-day outdoor retreat at the WBWF
Cove property. The four soldiers have all sustained severe injuries
since September 11, 2001 that include Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI),
extreme burns, loss of limbs, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The
Cove embodies a secluded 2,100+ acre site nestled in northern Halifax
County that includes more than 8 miles of river frontage on the scenic
Staunton River. The WBWF Wounded Warrior program uses Mother
Nature's natural elements to promote a positive recovery and give
the veterans the opportunity to explore their potential while trying
things they thought were impossible. The activities during this event
focused on building camaraderie and confidence and included hiking,
quail hunting, ATV trail riding, skeet shooting, and social gatherings.

These military heroes were assisted by local volunteers, and in exchange
the volunteers received an amazing lesson in resilience, perseverance,
and optimism. Leading the charge as volunteers were Ward Burton, Larry
Roller, Tom Inge, and Tom Falkland. Tom Falkland, a decorated soldier
himself, is the owner of Falkland Farms Hunting Plantation in Halifax
County, and he guided the quail hunting activity with the help of his
famous German Shorthair Pointers. Corporate sponsors included CaseNEX
which is an education consulting firm newly located in Riverstone in
South Boston, Beretta which is an international firearms manufacturer,
and EZ-Go which makes ATV golf carts supplied through Jeff
Henderson's local dealership. Many local restaurants and citizens
contributed food and drinks for the retreat. The Coalition to Salute
America's Heroes was an invaluable partner that helped identify the
soldiers in most need for this type of event and helped logistically
make the retreat possible.

One of the wounded warriors, Jorge Deleon, said "This is the best
thing that has happened to me in such a long time. Just being out in
the woods with a NASCAR driver is unbelievable!"

The WBWF has many programs geared towards the environment, but the
Wounded Warrior program is new and fits into the Foundation's goal
of connecting people to the outdoors. Ward Burton said, "Veterans
are in need of multi-day retreats that help them holistically in many
ways, and there are only a handful of organizations nationally that
provide that need. We are proud and honored to be one of those
organizations." The WBWF is planning long-term events throughout
the year with the goal of soon building more infrastructure that can
house wounded warriors and their families in order to treat the family
as a whole unit.

Meet the Newest NASCAR Cup Team Owner

Like everybody else in this cratering economic environment, NASCAR is
struggling. Sponsors are disappearing faster than a politician after
election day. Teams are folding up right and left, and for the first
time in years, there is talk that the Cup series will have to run races
without a full compliment of race cars.
But that didn't stop longtime crew chief Tommy Baldwin Jr., who just
lost his job when Bill Davis Racing shut down and sold its assets a few
weeks ago. Instead of heading for the unemployment line, Baldwin instead
decided to go against the grain and start his own team.

Tommy Baldwin Racing plans to run the complete NASCAR Sprint Cup
schedule campaigning Toyota race cars. But Baldwin has not yet
named a driver (although it likely will be WARD BURTON) or a sponsor.

And here's the best part: Baldwin not only acknowledges that the poor
economy is making the prospect of racing tough, he's embracing it.
Baldwin intends to take advantage of all the newly unemployed mechanics
and fabricators available by taking his pick among them on the cheap.

"With tough economic times upon us, the time for starting this team is
right," he says.
"Our overhead is low, and we have a great group of talented mechanics
and specialists to choose from. We can offer sponsors the chance to get
into NASCAR Sprint Cup racing at a fraction of the costs, without
compromising on-track performance, due to our low overhead."

You probably shouldn't expect much from the team when it does race,
given the disparity of resources that it will have compared to the big
guys like Hendrick Motorsports and Roush Fenway Racing, but it's still
fun to root for the contrarians.

Dear Fans,

First off, thank you for visiting my website and signing up to receive
updates from WardBurton.com. I plan to keep each and every one of you
more up-to-date with what I have going on in the future.

Despite no longer being a part of the NASCAR circuit, I'm still staying
busy as ever on and off the race track. I continue to oversee all the
operations of the Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation and Ward Burton
Enterprises - but those are just my day jobs. My oldest son, Jeb, is
keeping our family tradition alive and keeping me on the race track, by
racing professionally.

Jeb turned 16 this year and made his professional racing debut in the
Limited Sportsman Division. Out of eight races in his inaugural
season, he has four Top 5 finishes.

Because you have supported me for so long, I want you all, my fans, to
be the first to know about a new, limited-time promotion in which you
can sponsor the Jeb Burton race team. You can have your name or
company logo on Jeb's race car and website for as little as $1,000.
You'll even get autographed Hero Cards and a mention on
www.jebburtonracing.com.

To show our thanks, Jeb and I promise to make regular, personal
phone calls to thank you for helping us keep the Burton family tradition
alive on the race track. Plus, at the end of the race season, all
sponsors will be invited to a private dinner at the Burton home.

If you are interested in a primary sponsorship, we do have some spots
still available. As a primary sponsor, you'll get your logo displayed
on the car, as well as on Jeb’s racing suit. You could also
have access to # 27 show car appearances, autographed memorabilia, media
packets and photos for advertising, and logos and links on
www.jebburtonracing.com and www.wardburton.com. Plus, our primary
sponsors can use our family's name and likeness for marketing
purposes. And to top it off, you'll get a tour of Jeb's race shop,
previously a workshop I hand-built, at the 200 acres of Burton land in
Halifax, VA where my family was born and raised.

If you are interested in any level of sponsorship, please let us
know. Email us today at fanzone@... or visit
www.jebburtonracing.com for more information.

Thank ya'll for listening and I look forward to meeting you in the
future.

Ward Burton

Pulliam Wins Limited Sportsman Race; Deadlocks Points Race
Lee Pulliam of Semora, N.C. entered Saturday night's 50-lap Limited
Sportsman Division race trailing two-time and defending Limited
Sportsman Division champion, Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va. by
seven points in the chase for the track's Limited Sportsman Division
crown.
Pulliam did exactly what he needed to do – win the race.
Starting on the pole, Pulliam led all 50 laps of the race, edging
Anderson in a 10-lap sprint to the finish that followed the last of the
race's two caution periods. The win was the sixth of the season and the
second in a row for Pulliam.
Pulliam's margin of victory was 1.432 seconds.
The win by Pulliam and the second-place finish by Anderson unofficially
created a tie for first place in the division points standings. The
championship will be decided in the season's final race on September 13.
Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va., Tommy Peregoy of Red Oak, Va.
and JEB BURTON of Halifax rounded out the top five finishers.
Pulliam averaged 48.491 mph in the race that took 24 minutes and 55
seconds to complete.

August 2, 2008
Boy, what a borin' race
By Dorothy Nobis For The Daily Times
Article Launched: 08/02/2008 01:32:19 AM MDT

I wait all year for the Brickyard at Indy. I look forward to NASCAR
hitting the bricks at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I anticipate the
fanfare, the glitz and the history of the track, and I look forward to
good racin'.

While the fanfare, glitz and history of IMS was true to form, the racin'
part somehow managed to take the weekend off. Somebody forgot to tell
the racin' gods that they were supposed to be at Indy last Sunday, that
this race is one of the highlights of the season, and that fans actually
expect to see a race; not a parade of cars going about 75 miles an hour
around the track. We expected to see NASCAR's finest rubbin' and racin'
and fighting for the win, and the opportunity to kiss those bricks at
the start/finish line.

The race was so boring, I groomed the Cat Who Won't Stop Talking. He is
now the Bald Cat Who Hides in the Closet Until His Hair Grows Back. I
actually fell asleep a couple times, only to wake up 20 minutes later to
find out I had missed nothing.

There was nothing good about the Goodyears, people. Those tires were
Badcenturies, and they made for an unexciting race that was not fitting
for IMS.

The race was so uneventful, I suspect even the drivers fell asleep
behind the wheel. Crew chiefs were getting pedicures and pit crews
played cards between tire changes. Tony Stewart used his cell phone to
order a Subway sandwich, and his order was delivered by a kid in a Yugo,
who passed Tony three times and could have won the race on accounta he
had good tires.

I couldn't even justify quaffing my vintage white zin on this race; I
opted instead for Maddog 20/20, which was better suited to the race and
was just as bad.

As with every thundercloud, however, there was a silver lining; my Sweet
Baboo finished fourth. It is just a matter of weeks before Elliott
Sadler, who would love me if he'd just try, wins. And when he wins one,
he'll win a bunch. For reals.

The other good thing was that Boo-hoo Busch did not do well, and did not
dominate the race, which was very, very good for a change. It's nice to
see someone else win a race. I'm actually glad it was Jimmie Johnson,
who, I heard, ordered his own bricks and mortar for a backyard barbecue
pit from Lowe's during the race. I mean, it's not like he didn't have
time, and it's not like there was any real racing going on.

My Sweet Baboo, who, for those of you who just skim this column,
finished fourth at the Brickyard, said placing that high was almost as
good as winning. I prob'ly don't agree with that, but a smile from my
Sweet Baboo is wonderful, and I can tell he's rethinking the getting
married to that cute little woman who isn't me, on accounta he heard I
may be transferring my affections to Kute Kasey Kahne. 'Course, I also
heard Kasey's PR people already have contacted the authorities, hoping
they can get another one of those annoying restraining orders, keeping
me away from Kasey, the 9 car and anything remotely associated with me
and Gillett Evernham Motor Sports.

That's just not right, I'm tellin' ya.

They should appreciate my support and my total dedication to my drivers.
They should, but they don't. Then, I got hate mail from those three
women who do those insurance commercials with Kasey. Just cuz I'm cute
and available and foam at the mouth when it comes to my drivers, they
didn't have to get all mean and hateful with me. My relationship with
Kasey won't be the same as my undying devotion to My Sweet Baboo, who
would so love me if he'd just try.

I have considered moving on to Tony Stewart, but it seems everybody I
know wants Tony (even some of my guy friends) and I really fear the
threats on my life from a couple of the women who have contacted me,
through e-mail, vicious voice messages and security guards. Whatever.

Speaking of Stewart, I'm sure nobody was surprised to hear the
announcement of the impending announcement that Rocket Ryan Newman will
be Tony's teammate. The Stewman era is about to begin in NASCAR and it
will be exciting. They're kind of an odd couple, though, ole Tony and
Ryan. Tony's the brash, outspoken bad boy, and Ryan's the quiet
engineer, but ya just have to know they'll be a team to watch.

We're on to Pocono this weekend. I made reservations for Elliott Sadler
and me at one of those adult resorts Pocono is famous for. I found one
that has a heart-shaped pool, a seven-foot-tall Champagne Glass
Whirlpool and a cozy, wood-burning fireplace. I thought it would be the
perfect place for My Sweet Baboo and me to recover after the race, and I
pledged my 401k to pay for it. I'm pretty sure he'll show up. I put the
reservations under the name of Carrie Underwood, who sings better than I
do and who doesn't have those nasty restraining orders. I packed up
several cases of my vintage white zin to take, and have a friend shoving
food and water under the closet door for the Bald Cat Who Hides in the
Closet Until His Hair Grows Back.

I think Elliott will do well this week, which will justify the gazillion
dollars the room is costing me. He'll have another top-five and Dale
Earnhardt Jr. will win. And Penske Racing will hire Ward Burton to drive
the 12 car. And we can hope there are no tire issues this week and fans
get what they pay for.

It's a party - a pity party

By Dorothy Nobis The Daily Times
Article Launched: 06/14/2008 12:00:00 AM MDT

I've ordered the cake, bought the black balloons, took my finest plastic
wine glasses out of my china hutch, and stocked up on vintage white zin,
in addition to my newest favorite adult beverage, mango mojitos.

I've got black crepe paper streamers to hang from my ceiling fan, and
pulled out all my sad songs for good measure. I mailed the invitations
and followed up with e-mails to those who have not yet put me on their
"do not accept" lists. I've tidied up the house, cleaned the litter box
and got the Cat Who Won't Stop Talking's little bow tie out of
mothballs.

I am ready for the pity party.

I discovered this week that there are some NASCAR drivers who are barely
making minimum wage, whatever that might be in stock car racing. I found
out that some of 'em are prob'ly having a tough time making ends meet,
and I'm throwin' a party for them because I care. I'm gonna pass the
collection plate and divvy up the proceeds among 'em.

Juan Pablo Montoya made only an estimated $6 million last year, people,
but in order to receive that paycheck, he gave up most of his rights to
his commercial-sponsorship programs. That, my friends, remains with his
team, Chip Ganassi Racing. Now how in the world is JP going to survive
on just $6 mil annually is beyond me. He prob'ly has to pack a lunch
when he goes to the track, and he prob'ly utilizes public transportation
to get to and from work.

Then there's the arrogant and insufferable duo of Kyle Busch and Denny
Hamlin, who are both guaranteed $10 million a year, whether or not they
ever get to carry the checkered flag around the track. To his credit,
Boo-hoo Busch is steamrolling most of the other drivers in the wins
column.

But to be on the winning streak he's on and know that he's only
guaranteed $10 mil is enough to make him order his own M&Ms that say
"Poor Me." Busch and Hamlin will get a little more, though, if their
winnings, endorsement and merchandise royalties are good. For those of
you who, for whatever reason, like Busch and Hamlin, you might want to
buy lotsa M&Ms and send all your packages via FedEx to help 'em out.
After all, what are friends for?

For Tony the Tiger, the $700,000 he's going to get out of the estimated
$4 million from Subway to be a primary sponsor of the 20 car for three
races this year is enough to make me add him as a beneficiary to my
$10,000 life insurance policy. I'm sure the Perfect Children will
understand if I put Tony as the primary, donchathink? I'm not sure how
much Tony gets annually, but I'm just hopin' he gets discount coupons
from Home Depot for his home-improvement projects. It's the least they
can do.

I'm also hoping Pepsi delivers soda to the Gordon home on a regular
basis. When you're only making $32 million off the racetrack as Jeff
Gordon did last year, there may not be enough money to cover household
expenses, let alone the added bonus of soda. I'll bet the Gordons buy
the store brands, shop at Big Lots and rarely go out for dinner on that
little bit of extra cash. 'Scuse me while I blot my tears and blow my
nose.

Then there's Dale Earnhardt Jr. Now y'all know how I feel about "e." The
fact that Junior is forced to make due with just $31 million, most of
which came from PepsiCo, Anheuser-Busch and Adidas, just breaks my
heart. How in the world can they expect Junior to get by on a paltry $31
mil? Is that fair? It's a good thing one of his endorsements is for
Adidas, on accounta they prob'ly provide him with shoes, so's he doesn't
have to go barefoot. And I'm hoping he gets his Buds for free and enough
Pepsi and AMP to stock his fridge for when his buddies come over,
knowhatimean?

With Gordon topping the list for most money earned off the track and "e"
coming in second, one has to worry about those who are further down the
list. Can they make it, or do they have to rely on mom and dad for
financial help? Do they write home for money when they don't finish in
the top 10? Do they stop along the side of the road and pick up aluminum
cans to sell when they get to the next track for lunch money?

I don't know about y'all, but I might be able to get by on a couple mil
a year, even though I'd have to do major cutbacks in my lifestyle. I'd
prob'ly have to give up my wine crawl space, on accounta I couldn't
afford vintage white zin to put in it. And I wouldn't be able to enjoy
my Happy Meal at Mickey D's as often, which would seriously cut into my
social life, which revolves around dinner under the golden arches.

It's gotta be tough for those NASCAR drivers to stay afloat. They
probably live paycheck to paycheck, always borrowing from Peter to pay
Paul. Yep, I'm gonna have the pity party. I'm gonna raise my plastic
glass of vintage white zin and extend my sympathies to 'em. It's only
fair, since my lifestyle is so much better than theirs, donchathink?

Take away the M&Ms, I'm tellin' ya
By Dorothy Nobis The Daily Times
Article Launched: 05/17/2008 02:47:24 AM MDT

I'm gonna ask one more time, will someone puulleese check to see what's
in the M&Ms Kyle Busch is eating before every doggone race?

I'm convinced someone is putting AMP in Busch's little chocolate
candies. It's either AMP or Sunoco fuel (which gives him a little gas).
One or the 'nother.

Busch's win at Darlington last week was not a good way to start my
Mother's Day weekend. The Perfect Children took me to a really nice
restaurant the night of the race (they don't take me out in public much,
and after Saturday night, they threatened to never, ever, EVER take me
out again, at least when there's a NASCAR race on. Whatever), and I was
forced to watch the end of the race from way far away from the nearest
television.

I found out later, the PC requested that table on accounta they hoped if
I couldn't see the race, dinner would be better for everyone, 'specially
the other customers.
We were nearing dessert when the 18 car took the checkered flag. I had
contained myself pretty well (I only stood up and screamed once before
the restaurant manager said if I couldn't sit down and behave, he was
gonna make me eat in the kitchen (of the restaurant next door) and
really tried to make nice for the Perfect Children.

I kept my mutterings to myownself, and acted like I was interested in
the PC's conversation, even though I was straining to hear the
television. I think, at one point, they were talking about finally
giving me a grandchild, which under ordinary circumstances, would have
my undivided attention.

But this was, I remind you, Darlington.

I can only hope when and if they follow through and give me a grandbaby,
it's not born during a race. Note to self: talk to PC about the time of
conception and remind them summer is the best time to have babies.

When Busch took the win, I choked on my crème brulee, took a big
slug of my white zin, and fell to the floor in a fetal position. I
gasped for air, then gasped for more white zin, then asked them to
please put the crème brulee on the floor so's I could finish it. No
sense in wasting a really good crème brulee, yaknowhadimean?

I thought I handled the whole thing pretty well, since the restaurant
manager comped our meals, even though he did so only with a promise from
the PC that they would never, ever bring me back. I pretty much thought
that was mean and hateful of him, and started to tell him that when the
Perfect Child stuffed a napkin in my mouth and ushered me out the door.
I woulda been mad, except it was the napkin I used to sop up the white
zin I spilled when I jumped up and screamed the first time, and white
zin that has aged for an hour isn't bad.

I'm still mad at Busch for deliberately spinning Junior out of the race
at Richmond. I know there will be a couple of you who will say it wasn't
Busch's fault, but it was. And as a card-carrying member of Junior
Nation, I will defend my General until the end. I did, though, feel
sorry for Busch's mom, who was introduced with her Busch Boys during
driver introductions. Kyle was booed (a lot) by fans, and it really
isn't her fault her younger son has yet to learn humility or
likeability.

Kyle Busch can drive. That was apparent when he overcame stuff during
the race that would have discouraged any great driver. He bounced off
the wall and he dropped back into the 29th spot when his pit crew left a
lug nut off a wheel. Fueled by whatever they put in his M&Ms, the kid
managed to fight back and win. I don't havta like Kyle Busch (and I
don't) but ya gotta admire his talent. I just wish his Mom'd teach him
some manners. He's arrogant and insufferable, ya know.

The first part of the race wasn't easy for me, neither. There my sweet
Baboo was, in seventh place at like, lap three, when he and Tony Stewart
got together. Elliott Sadler, who will love me when he knows me, said it
was his fault and ended up in the garage. Tony, who might like me if he
knew me, finished 21st, but didn't say anything mean and hateful about
my sweet Baboo, which is a good thing because that would give me no
place to shop for my home-improvement needs. (Jimmie Johnson, who drives
the Lowe's car, took out Elliott Sadler several years ago and has yet to
apologize for it, and while I did not shop at Lowe's for any of those
years, I'm trying to forgive and forget and move on, but it's not easy,
let me tell ya.)

Speaking of Elliott Sadler, my NASCAR buddy, Kent from Ohio, sent me a
story about Elliott that said he's thinking about becoming a country
singer. Elliott claims he sings country songs when he's racin', and
thinks his second career could very well take him to Nashville and on to
the Grand Ole Opry.

I'm thinkin' that could be a wise move, but only if he'd invite Ward
Burton and me to sing along. No one could understand Elliott or Ward, on
accounta they have that Virginia accent that's so very cute, but it
wouldn't matter. They could be called "Big and Little" and I could tap
dance in the background. We could all wear outfits like Dolly Parton and
Porter Wagner wore in the olden days. I really think we'd be a huge hit.

I can't sing, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night and I did take
beginning tap dance lessons, even though I was held back and havta take
'em again. I can do a mean step-ball-chain and phlap as part of my
tappin'. Just ask my teacher, the ever-so-nice Debbie, who said the only
reason she held me back is cuz I'll be a good example for the next
beginning tappers. I so love being a role model.

All-Star race is tonight. I can't wait. I've voted for Elliott Sadler a
gazillion times to be the driver voted in by fans. I also attempted to
write in Ward Burton and Dick Trickle, but the poll didn't recognize
'em. Whatever.

Junior will win, followed by Elliott Sadler, followed by Dale Jarrett,
who's gonna drive the truck. Go, Dale, go - give the keys to Ward
Burton.

Whatever it takes......
