Police Beef Up Security for NASCAR Races; Airports Also See Boom
06/02/2007 10:07 AM EST
DOVER- About 140,000 race fans flood the Dover International Speedway
twice a year for NASCAR. Another 20,000 people remain outside during the
race, walking around the vendors or watching from their RVs.
Police from across the state team up to make sure race weekend runs
smoothly. There will be 86 patrols on Saturday and 103 on Sunday. Police
say they will get a few different complaints throughout the weekend,
like noise at night or drunk and disorderly conduct. But they say it
generally remains very quiet, so they focus on the traffic in town.
"We have VERY FEW PROBLEMS for the number of people that we have here,"
said Dover Police Captain Lester Boney. Our number one concern is
getting people from point A to point B safely."
Another side effect of the race: a boost in business at Delaware
airports.
The Delaware River and Bay Authority says about 5,000 race fans,
drivers, and owners will fly into and out of Delaware's airports over
the weekend.
The busiest traffic's expected at Dover's Civil Air Terminal. Some
flights will also land at the Cheswold Airpark and the Georgetown
Airport.
Officials call this one of the busiest weeks of the year
at Delaware airports.
