I totally agree with that statement. NASCAR took a
serious downturn when Nextel took over and started to
edge the veteran drivers out. They wanted this to be
a glamorous sport and all the drivers to be
celebrities. That's why we started to see the influx
of pretty boy, teeny bopper drivers while veterans
like Ricky Craven, Johnny Benson, and Ward Burton were
ushered to the sidelines. NASCAR and Nextel is trying
way too hard to legitimize themselves and they are
shooting themselves in the foot in my opinion.
I used to go to 4 - 6 races per season. Now I'm down
to going only to the Kentucky Busch race. I don't
agree with the direction Nascar has taken and I'm not
going to support them financially by attending races.
Ward being back has definately re-stoked my
enthusiasm, but not to the level it was 5 years ago.
I think it would be a travesty if Ward DNQ for the
Daytona 500. I saw he was 11th fastest in practice
yesterday (up from low 40s on Tuesday and Monday.)
Hopefully they can find a bit more speed between now
and Speedweeks and race their way into the show.
