DW on the points system...
from Fox Q&A:
Chief47304@...: If you mean what you say that wins should
determine championships, you would have lost to Awesome Bill in 1985.
Don't you think a season would be boring if somebody wins races like
Bill did in 1985?
Darrell Waltrip: That was 19 years ago, and the sport has certainly
changed. Bill Elliott had the best car all year long. At the end of
the season, he had the worst luck, and under the "Chase for the
Championship" system, he still wouldn't have won the championship
because he had all of his problems in the last 10 races of the year.
Based on this new system, I probably stil would have won the
championship even though Bill had the most wins.
The championship should be about winning. You can paint that picture
any way you want to, and you can go back 50 years if you want to, but
the guy who wins the most races should end up being the champion in
my opinion. It's just like any other sport. If we're going to look
like football, baseball or any other professional sport, the team
with the best record wins.
Here's the thing. Everything I've heard about this point chase is
based on best-case scenarios. But what if Dale Earnhardt Jr. or Jeff
Gordon aren't in the top 10 at the 26-race cutoff? Those two guys
wouldn't be in the championship chase, and I'm sure that would upset
a lot of folks. What if a driver gets hurt like Sterling Marlin did
in 2002 right at the cutoff? Now you've got a driver who has no
points or a driver that's different than the car owner so you've got
to deal with that scenario.
And the thing that I hate the worst is you're still points racing.
You've got to have enough points to be in the top 10 at the 26-race
cutoff, and then it's based on points in the 10-race shootout or
playoff so you're still points racing. You can end up with a champion
who has no wins or you could end up with a champion who has one win,
and I thought that was what NASCAR was trying to prevent.
