Connor,
I appreciate your eagerness, but please don't reply to all on this e-mail.

Thanks,
Ray

Hello Everybody,
It's that time...and boy its coming quick. Let's get down to business.

division and # of teams):

later)

The tournament is still May 16/17, at LCB. Girls will only be playing on
Saturday May 16, Final under the lights, on the main field Saturday Evening. I
have no issues with them picking up with their perspective B-Team's on Sunday,
at the coaches discretion. Open will be both days, and we will be playing at
LCB, and Salem Middle like the past 2 years(3 Fields at both schools). There
will be food(Pizza/Subs) Saturday Evening out at the fields if the temperature
permits, while watching the girls Final's and Various competitions: Freestyle,
Pull, Tree, RPS, and Sprint(I am up for other suggestions, and need people to be
in charge of them...Christian?).
School address:
LC Bird High School
10301 Courthouse Rd
Chesterfield VA, 23832
Times:
Registration will begin at 8AM Saturday Morning to allow paperwork to be
verified. Captains Meeting at 8:45, at the registration table. One captain from
each team is REQUIRED to attend. First game Saturday will be at 9:30.
Rosters:
All players must be registered with the UPA, and you must make an online
Roster, on UPA's site. Membership payments and Waiver can be given to me the day
of the tournament, but ALL players MUST have a UPA ID, and be added to your
Roster, prior to 12 Noon on May 13th. Once you have the Roster, you can submit
it to the Tournament, therefore allowing me to verify it, and make sure you are
good to go.
Each team is allowed no more than 3 players from another school. That doesn't
mean if you have a A-Team and a B-Team that you are allowed to play 4 players
from another school on your A-Team. That is 3 players from another school per
Roster. If I find out there has been an abuse of this, without previously
getting approval from me, your team WILL be disqualified from States. So if you
think this is going to be an issue, please contact me ASAP.
There is no $5 event/One time option; ALL players must be UPA members. I will
accept a completed/signed waiver and $20 the day of the tournament, but no group
checks for membership fees. Money must be separated per waiver. The big group
checks were a real hassle last year for the membership fees. If I cannot verify
their status via the Roster on Friday, then I will need the above in order for
them to play. If there needs to be a refund the UPA will handle.
Money:
The cost is $120 for the 1st team from each school, and $80 per additional.
Make checks payable to Ray Heath. I MUST have your check/money before the start
of play on Saturday you're your team will not be playing. I do not want to be
hunting anybody down to get their money. Address to send checks to:

Thanks Dave!!! I really appreciate you helping the WAFC Jr. teams out.
Clarity on a few things.
Cost: $120 per team, $80 for each additional team from the same school. That is a flat team fee.
Membership: There is NO $5 per event fee anymore, to play at States you MUST be a UPA member, but like Dave said it is only $20 for a year, and includes a copy of the rules, a magazine, stickers, and most importantly insurance at UPA sanctioned events. I will accept membership money at States with a signed waiver. No big check for the team, each person must have their money/check with their waiver.
Players: All except 3 players must be from your HS. Those 3 players must be attending another High School. If you need to have a exception to this rule, you must contact me.
Thanks,
Ray

Rather than just answer this question for 1 team I will send info out to all of WAFC Jr about your state championship event. I will also CC my state coordinator in case I get anything wrong
So there's this organization, the UPA: www.upa.org The sponsor all the elite ultimate that happens in the country. the people who want to play enough to travel beyond their geographic region. They sponsor a whole national series for the college and club (adult elite) level. Teams play in sectionals, the winners go to regionals, the winners of regionals meet at nationals and play through to a National Champion. http://upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=124&upa=1&year=2008 http://upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?upa=1&div=122
At the youth level the season is too short to have those sorts of elimination, play in events but the UPA does its best to pick the best teams from each state and invite them to an East Coast and West Coast Championship. My team has gone to these sorts of events since 2003.
How do they pick the best teams? generally based on state championships, which the UPA also sponsors. They are good events in and of themselves: big 2 day tournaments where your team plays 3+ games Saturday and up to 3 games Sunday. Several games of ultimate in a day can be pretty exhausting but its also great going on a road trip with your team. Its also fun to mingle with other ultimate teams, hang out with other ulti kids. Last year they had 14 teams at the VA event.
Here are the challenges. VA states is in richmond so you have to convince some adults to drive/spend the night down there with you. According to the UPA rules you need 2 (i think) adults to be with you at the fields anyway. This is basically for medical emergency type stuff. The UPA also requires that all the players be registered. They dont want kids joining in with teams that aren't your school, or sneaking on alumni or any of that hijinks when trying to crown a legitimate state champion. So if you want to fully join the UPA (like all the kids on YHB, Urbana, WTWoodson, etc do) you have to pay 20$ but you get some stickers a magazine in addition to the tourneys. I think they still offer a "1 time only" membership of 5$.
2) A medical waiver that you give to your coach/sponsor/adult person if you are under 18. http://www.upa.org/files/Medical_Authorization_Form_V1.5.pdf Basically it says=2 0who your doctor is, how to contact your parents, and that its ok to put you in an ambulence in case you get totally mauled and are unconscious. I know it seems ridiculous but I had a kid taken away in an ambulence last year. He was conscious, his parents were there, so it worked out ok, but if not its good to have that paper.
Its a pain getting all that paperwork in but the tournament is totally worth the work. Both VA and MD's state events are May 16, 17th and there will be no WAFC games that day so you can go.
Lemme know what else you need to know, Dave

Hey, i just want to confirm all of Urbana's A and B games... so will you be able
to attend Blair, Bowie and Heights? just get back to me so we know that we have
all the games confirmed... Urbana will be able to attend all the games!
It looks good for playing ultimate this weekend! Hurray!
We have 6 games at silgo, 4 at Mont hills and 3 at Lake Ffx.
Check the schedule to see where you are, confirm with your opposing captains.
I know its the start of spring break but please everyone make sure to get teams out, the weather should be great.
I will have discs to give you.
You will have paperwork to give me.
It will be good to get these games in this weekend because we some data upon which to assign teams after Easter.
The theory was that you were going to have played 4 games and the strong/med/weak teams would emerge.
Alas for some of you it will be based on one game and the beginning of the year forms.
But we will do our best, be sure to report any scores you have (email me)
so we can make the best assignments, provide teams with the best matchups in the second half of the season.
I know it seems like we have just begun but this weekend I will be talking to teams about the future, the summer.
WAFC offers a great scholarship opportunity: a free week at NUTC the most established ultimate only summer camp in the country.
Last year no one applied for it.
So this year I will start advertising it earlier. Check out www.NUTC.net see if its right for you or one of your players.
See you on the fields,
Dave
Sean of Paint Branch, I just want to confirm that we are good to play at 3:30- 5:00 with Urbana's A team at Urbana park in Urbana, MD. The fields are located at the west corner of Urbana Pike (Rt 355) and Lew Wallace Street. Just past the Urbana Elementry school and Urbana Firestation. We are at the fields behind the tennis courts. We will be there at 2:30 to set up the fields and warm up.
If anybody wants to play our B team on Wednesday please let us know.
Thanks,
John - Urbana Coach

Things are not looking good weather wise, alas.
So stay posted but right now I dont think games will be on.
I wish they were on because I have a lot of discs to give you.
Currently they are taking up space in my room instead of bringing joy to your team.
The sooner we have an "on" weekend that I can attend the sooner you can be throwing this sweet fresh plastic.
In order for that to happen I have to know that you have paid and turned in waivers.
I got a very smart request from Howie W of JDS to add more info to the contacts page.
If you go to the google doc where your shedule is and look at the tab on the far right you'll see one called "contacts"
Use that to get the info on the captain you are about to play.
Call them, email them, facebook them, whatever; just get in contact.
Everyone should check the contact page, just to make sure their info is fresh and accurate.
If its not up to date please let me know.
Unless there is some wild unpredictable weather pattern change games should be on this weekend.
Unfortunately I wont be there because of other frisbee commitments (YHB Invite I am hosting, 20 teams for NCarolina to NYC).
For the first round at Silgo (1 - 3) Kris Gill the coach of Montgomery Blair (in Red) knows what's up and is deputized to answer all questions, help get things moving. For Silgo's 2nd round refer all issues to Howie W of JDS or if he's not there Sean K of Paint Branch. These are coaches who have been playing for a while and are a great resource.
At MHills there are 4 B teams. I expect all of them will have some experienced players or adults coaching them. All 4 schools should have a quick huddle, introduce themselves, get ready to work together.
What might you have to work on? Review the common rules, expectations. As the first game of the season its good to touch base, get on the same page. If one team doesn't show up figure out how to divide the teams that are there so that no team is left sitting w/o an opponent. If the biggest team is sufficently large then they should split in 2. If not they everyone donates a randomly selected couple of players to make a hybrid, fill in the gap team. As you can imagine this is a big pain in the ass. If ya'll have done your jobs and lined up your players, located the fields, and maybe even contacted your opposing captain then the whole day should run fine.
Speaking of your jobs I obviously can't be there to collect waivers, but you should have them for all players. Letting one of your guys play without puts our whole league at risk. Be a leader and make sure everyone is covered.
I wanted to ask about permits. I heard from someone who forgot to check the wafc hotline and actually went to Sligo last week that there were lots of soccer players. Will you be there with permits to make sure we have field space?
I am sure you have this thought out Dave, but wanted to make sure we have that covered .
Hi all,
Adrienne, coach of the Field school ultimate frisbee team. We can host games at
the Field school on our super nice turf field on weeknights! We have lots of
available days, email me (adrienned@...) if your interested.
Urbana can field a B team on the 29th to play churchills b team if JDS can't field a team.
Thanks,
John

I paid over 2,000 $ for 400 new discs this week. they will arrive in early april. WAFC will reimburse me. you should bring a check to WAFC to pay them. Its 200$ if you have a single team, 300$ if you have 2 teams. Include you team name in the subject line so I know whose is whose.
There is a 40% chance we wont be playing Sunday. Call 301.LUV.BMAX the day of the game to hear if they are on.
A reccomendation: make contact with the other teams captain via facebook or email. Make sure they are there, know how many folks to expect, what color will they be wearing, etc.. If you do not yet know who you are playing, if you were not able to acess the spreadsheet let me know ASAP.
Thanks for your work as captains/coaches/organizers, the league couldn't function without you being willing to be a jerk to your friends occasionally, making them do paperwork. Its not pleasent but its essential.

Dave,
Do I need some special privilege to access the schedule? I get the message "We're sorry, dristy@... does not have permission to access this spreadsheet." when I try to access the link.
Or at least i think it is. http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pn4RNZWWBoXe4-9ZKY5tqZQ&hl=en
Let me know if anything is wildly unreasonable.
We've got MD teams playing in 2 shifts at Silgo (the Sunday permits got fixed so we could run up to 4 games there all day).
We had a new MD team (Bowie) come in so I gave a couple of teams double headers, check the sched.
The B teams are meeting at Montgomery Hills 3 - 5
And the VA team are going to start at my school but end up at the nicer Lake Fairfax.? I would rather not use my fields, they are pretty sketchy, but its where (I am pretty sure) i can get the permit.
I fully expect that at least 1 round of these weekends will get rained out.
You should call 301.LUV.BMAX everyday before you play to make sure things are on, especially if there is any rain in the area, that day or the day before.
Still even with a rainout or two we should have enough of an established record that after Spring Break we will reshuffle the teams
and have stronger teams play stronger teams, etc.
If I am not providing you with enough ultimate there are 2 more options.
1) Field school in the district has a sweet turf field of their own.?
They have the organization to move to a more normal sports schedule
with games during the week, after school or maybe even Friday night types.?
They are looking for schools who want to set something like this up.
email neilb@fieldschool.org?if you are interested in pursuing this more.
2) Travel to tournaments.?
Philadelphia host a couple of good events during the spring,
Cardinal OHara's mixed tourney April 12th
PADA's HipHop April 18th, Pennsbury's Born2Dive April 25th.
In addition to these there will be our own Event May 2nd and your state championships in Mid May.
Most Ultimate is played in that format, with several games in a day, we encourage you to check it out.
Where do I find out about these, where can you.
UPA my friends, UPA.? It is a great clearing house for information, an organization dedicated to promoting ultimate.
We encourage you to check out their website if not join (all my players are members).
Lemme know if there are any glaring problems with your schedule.

Dave
but dont read too much into it because I am going to have to change almost all of it.
because after scheduling I contacted the people in charge of our parent organization to make sure all the permits were solid. And it turns out WE DONT HAVE THE PERMIT FOR SILGO. more specifically we have the permit for only 1 of 2 silgo fields. The other one we only have before 11am and after 5pm, not so useful.
But we have other alternatives. But I dont know anything about them.
So I put them here
Link: <http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=104717369300308344810.0004642e6f5c8f1177096&t=h&z=11>
Silgo and Montgomery Hills are our classics. What do you know about the new ones?
Can you MD team give us some feedback on them, where you would like to play,
what is a good spot? easy to find? acess to some bathrooms nearby?
Also are any of them 2 soccer field (ie 4 ultimate fields) locations?
reply ASAP if you know.
if you are busy stop reading, unecessary background to follow:
One of the things I have learned in this job is that it is best to keep the schedule simple. I would like for you to play at the same field at the same time week after week. It makes it easier for you to organize your team to show up, which helps the schedule run better, more ultimate, more fun.
So I would like to be able to assign you MD teams to a field and time and keep you there for the first 4 weeks. with 1 soccer field i can have 4 teams, which means 3 games at that time, location over 3 weeks. That means in the 4th week some folks will have to shuffle, which can be a pain. If we can find a good 2 soccer field spot I can run 8 teams which can easily allow you to keep coming back to the same spot at the same time and always find a new opponent.
I will work on this more on Saturday.
talk to me,
Dave
I just dont know what to do about all these VA teams that haven't gotten back to me. i would like to get them in but if they dont get me more info then they be OUT like ryan seacrest. oh wait.
the main info I need to know is when teams can and cant show. I need to be sure they will be there to put them in the sched. If your team didn't have a rep at the meeting then a captain should have talked to me about this sort of scheduling info.
If you cant get your team together right now, that's ok. this weather sucks for playing. if you want to start after Easter we can work with that and maybe give you a discount. But some teams are fired up to start and I need to get them a sched, so let me know if you are real or not.
1) All of the items on the list are flexible. We want you at the meeting whether or not you have the calendar, the coach or the cash.
2) You should pay before the games start. But we have like a month for that. That way you can raise a team, get them to pay some dues.
3) I dont get the money. WAFC doesn't make any profit. All this money comes back to you. Mainly it comes back to you in the form of grass and plastic, ie fields and discs.
4) If we want other stuff we just need to ask for it. They folks in charge there really want to support us. They have offered to host a party for us, renting out a venue or something. Come with good ideas of what they can do for us and I'll pass it on.
5) For context WAFC charges regular adult teams 300$ per season. And those teams just get games, no stack of discs. I charge my players 200$ EACH for the spring season. (that pays for uniforms, bus trips to ohio, etc.). We used to charge 20$ a season but our vision for our team has grown. We wanted to do more, be more and that growth has required us to make these commitments.
6) It hurts a little bit to put yourself out there, but if this is something important to you, if you love playing ultimate then you should just bit the bullet and get the money. Do whatever it takes. Ask you parents, bust open your piggy bank, pimp out your freshmen.
The first hour of each meeting will be optional.
From 6:30 to 7:30 we will play some indoor ultimate.
Its a quick, fun game that emphacizes cutting and handling over hucking.
Bring a light and dark shirt. We will do that as people gather.
At 7:30 we will stop throwing and have our actual meeting. It should take an hour or so.
At these meetings we will discuss the season ahead:
figure out what times and locations work best, game format, and
we will vote on the disc that we will publish this year. Each team will get several.
What should you bring?
1) A few kids from your team. 3 - 4 is a good number, we dont want the meeting to be too huge. Ideally you should bring a junior or underclassman. It's good to have someone next year know what's up .
2) A 200$ check to WAFC (the Washington Area Frisbee Club). They provide us with our fields, insurance, discs, snacks, etc. They sponsor a summer scholarship to frisbee camps. They would do more for us if we ask them.
3) A school/team calendar. When is Spring Break? When is prom? Finals? Do a lot of your kids take any particular AP exam? Is half your team going on the band trip? Help us shape our season by bringing this kind of data.
4) An adult. Ideally from your school, a coach/sponsor type person. If you dont have a coach I can try to help you get one.
5) An electronic design for the spring disc. A hand drawn sketch won't work. It needs to be electronic so I can email to the company. Here are their specifications: http://discraft.com/art.html. Attached is Landon's offering. We should have many more by the meeting(s).
So when and where are these meeting?
You have 2 to chose from to reduce conflicts/drive times.
Virginia Meeting: Feb 5th at HB Woodlawn.
4100 N Vacation Ln, Arlington VA 22207.
Maryland Meeting: Feb 8th at Potomac Community Center.
11315 Falls Road, Potomac, MD 20854.
For planning purposes let me know:
what school you are, how many folks you'll bring, and which meeting you are coming to.
And anything else I need to know.
Dave

ps for the VA meeting I can arrange rides from the Metro to the school.
Let me know if you need that.
Can anyone help us out with metro shuttles in MD?
Its about 4 miles from Twin Brook and Rockville...
It was warm on friday, warm enough to be outside throwing, thinking about spring ultimate.
Here's what's going on for DC area juniors.
I have an entire graphics art class working on disc designs for 2009.
That project is due Feb 2nd so sometime after that we can have a meeting.
At this meeting we can pick the design we want for our spring discs and decide on the details/format for the spring leagues.
We have more and more teams joining (hurray!) do we want to split into MD and VA divisions (DC schools could chose either).
It would mean less driving/transportation hassles but we'd be a little more restricted with our matchups.
Maybe we could play in geogaphically distinct leagues in the first third of the season (PreEaster)
and then having established the reatively stronger/weaker teams play them against eachother in the later part of the season (Post Easter).be
These are the sort of things we need to discuss, along with gender ratios, wearing shoes, signing waivers etc.
Last year some kids had to drive 2 hours to get to my school for the meeting.
This year I am proposing that we have 2 geographically based meetings.
I have called and sent an email to the ultimate frisbee guy at Mont Co Parks and Rec. asking him for space there for a meeting.
When I have that info I will set that meeting and one here in VA.
These meetings will be 7:30 - 8:45ish sometime in the Feb 3 - 5 or 10 - 12 window.
If you have a colonoscopy or some other major event already schedule in that time window
let me know and I can try to avoid double booking you.
Lastly, tomorrow night I am going to a volunteer recruitment meeting for frisbee players,
its a forum where I can try to drum up some coaches, experienced players that can help your team get to the next level.
the big trick is finding coaches who are free in the afternoon when most team practice.
The ideal solution is getting a teacher at your school who can help out.
If you want a coach and can't find an ultimate playing faculty member shoot me an email
Let me know when and where you practice, how many kids you have out and I'll see if I can find a volunteer for you.
In closing - look for an email this week that will tell you about a meeting in early Feb at which we will plan the spring season ahead.
