Which one of you Maryland schools would like to pick this girl up? It seems like a hot addition to any program. If you can start a girl in 8th grade she can be a superchampion for you junior/senior year. And she's already psyched!
Hi -
I have an eighth grade daughter who would love to play ultimate frisbee this spring and fall. She was introduced to the sport in camp this summer.Do you know of any teams where she could participate in the area? We are in Silver Spring but could drive a reasonable distance.
Thanks,
Stephanie Goodwin
a good chance to play a full day of ultimate and convient for the many of you from Maryland.
Speaking of convience if we want to organize a little juniors fall brawl of our own it would be good to know how many of us there are who play in the fall, what sort of fields we'll need, what sort of fields we have. There have been lots of new people registering at WAFC jr and a few dropping out. We'd like to take an inventory to know what schools effectively passed the torch.
So email me the following info
School Name
Primary Contact
Adult Contact (if you dont have one, get a sponsor, its a good way to establish your club)
Brief Team description (how many folks do you have out, how much of a team could you field)
Does your school have athletic fields we could use? How many?
I've heard some teams are trying to come together for the fall clique season, sounds like a good idea, but it can be a struggle to make your sport happen year round. If you cant get enough folks out that's no reason you shouldn't play some good ultimate. Check out WAFC.org and follow the link to rec league, you can "baggage" in groups of 2 or 3. Do so this week, fall season starts soon.
Another juniors ultimate possibility if you dont mind the drive is in Newport News VA on October 15th. Contact cslesn03@... if you are interested.
If you are a college kid still getting these make sure someone from your old school has registered and then take yourself off the list. I dont need to get a bunch of reminders everytime a message goes out to some inactive addresses.
Please encourage other schools to get on this list if you hear about them having fledgeling programs. The more the merrier. Also you should start planning your recruitment efforts, be ready to nab kids when school starts. Its a lot easier to recruit/convince them that ultimate is a fun game in early september than in early march.
I'm looking for a HS or College team to work with "Coach" this Fall, the closer
to Rosslyn the better. College Women's and High School Ultimate Coaching
experienced.
Let me know if your program thinks I could help.

hey all, if there is anyone is interested in forming a clique league
team together with the TJ, please send me an email. We would very
much like to play clique this fall, but we have no women. rosters
need to be submitted by sept. 2nd. again, if you're interested in
joining forces with TJ to create the Ultimate ultimate team, talk to
me.

Hi everybody,
I am the new captain of Wilson Ultimate Team. All the seniors from
last year team have graduated and we have nobody in our team who is
familiar with the registration process. I will greatly appreciate it
if somebody can point out a few things to me.
Thanks for any help.

University of Maryland Hat Tournament!
Saturday, September 3rd – 9 AM
The UMD Ultimate Frisbee club is hosting its second Hat Tournament at
the University of Maryland in College Park on Saturday, September 3.
Come celebrate the start of Labor Day weekend. $10 for a great day of
Ultimate, lots of food and water, and even some prizes! To register,
email to Cara at horseback1119@....
Hi everyone,
The only things we need now are cones and discs so if people could chip in that
would be
great. Anyone who would like to go for pizza or whatever after or during games
please
bring money as well. See you all there.
delmar
Hi everyone,
The pickup is on Saturday so for all who plan on coming its at 10:30. Since its
in
Annandale we are obviously using a different field the easiest way to find it is
to mapquest
the adress. I made a little mistake o0n the adress the zip is not whatever i
put it is in fact
22003 but either way mapquest should come up with something. So far i have
confirmation from 4 captains that people will come so it should be fun. Just so
everyone
knows this is not a hat tournament this is a pickup so there will probably be
some mixing
of teams.
Delmar
Evening everyone,
Apparently im stupid and forgot to put the date up for this pick up... Well the
date is the
saturday after the fourth of july the 9th. Also i have an adress noew for those
of you who
need to mapquest or google the new location. 3901 Woodburn Road, Annandale VA,
22031. This is the St. Ambrose Catholic School and right behind it are the
fields. Any
team that still wants in on this can contact me anytime there are already 5
teams in on it.
I will post further things as they arrive.
Thanks,
Delmar
Matt,
I am booked for this summer, but I would be interested in coaching a
team for the junior club championships for next year. As next spring
approaches, let's think about what we would need in order to do it
right (what the selection process would be, what kind of logistical
and financial support we would need, how often, where, and when we
would practice, etc.). A friend of mine coaches Seattle's "MOHO"
team--he runs practices through the spring every weekend, as a sort of
advanced "minicamp," whose basic structure I could crib pretty
effectively. This could work well given the existing structure of the
leage: for each weekend when there are league games on Sunday, have an
advanced minicamp on Saturday for any players who might potentially
qualify for the team. This would also be a good way to give some
basic skills and strategy training to representatives of all teams
that they could take back to their programs, while also building this
all-star team to represent WAFC nationally. If this sounds like a
good idea to you, who else do you think we need to talk to in order to
get the ball rolling?

In case there is some confusion about ultimate championships, here is
how I think it works...
On the local level, the WAFC Jr DEFJAM tournament on June 12th was the
local championship:
http://www2.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=17&id=1544
Virginia has a state tournament (Yorktown won it last year):
http://www2.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=17&id=1495
There are many regional tournaments, a popular one is Hiphoponpop in
Philly; Sidwell and Yorktown travelled there last year:
http://www2.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=17&id=1423
There is an Eastern and a Western championship... Yorktown competed in
the Eastern Championship in Pittsburgh last year and the men earned
11th place and the women earned 5th place (I think the women included
Katie from TJ and Laura from BCC):
http://www2.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=17&id=1517
This year for the first time there is this Youth Club national
championship. Theoretically WAFC Jr could field a team, but it would
take 2 highly motivated adults and 10 or so motivated players from
various teams who really want to go to Blaine Minnesota in August....

The application period for the inaugural YCC has been extended, and we
are encouraging “at-large” teams (those not affiliated with a youth
league) to apply for the Mixed and Girls divisions. Teams from youth
leagues will still receive priority. However, because the event is in its first
year and not many leagues are established, it is highly likely that a number of
“at-large” bids will be awarded in these two divisions.
evening again
these are the directions to the new field and the times at which the pickup will
be held.
these are submitted courtesy of my aim with pat so forgive the oddness
okay take the beltway
and you get off at the Little River Turnpike exit
and take little river TPK. past Northern VA community college
and turn right on woodburn road
then take another right (which will for some reason still be woodburn road)
and there will be a school/church on your right in like 50 feet
pull into the school parking lot
and go behind the school
and there will be a huge field, you can't possibly miss it
10:30-4:00
there is a 7-11 real close for h20, gatorade runs
and a pizza hut next door we could do lunch afterwards
ok as stated we could do lunch afterwards this depends entirely on enthuisiasm
so it will
be decided at the game hope you all can come.
delmar
evening to everyone

delmar
(nsnva)

new school ultimate
I forgot to mention that if you haven't already, please ask your
2005-2006 captain(s) and committed players to subscribe to this list...
(it's better to have more than one person from each team on this
list... last year a team had only had one person subscribe, and he had
email glitches the week before a game, and the team had a no-show
forfeit)
I just found out that I'm going to be teaching computer camp starting
monday, so I'm not going to be organizing a high school early summer
pick-up game as planned. But I can think of at least two ways that it
can still happen if there is interest...
Some of the committed players may know each other by now... maybe they
contact each other behind the scenes (email addresses are on the
website), find a day that works, and then broadcast the date through
this list...
Or maybe interested people can send emails to this list and figure out
a date that works...
As far as venue, you can play most places without a permit if you
arrive by 10am-ish to claim a field... I talked to WAFC poo-bah Chris,
and permits for Sligo can probably be arranged if there is interest
(which would allow for sleeping-in and a later start time)...
Have a great summer,
Mattfratt
I haven't memorized the wafc jr yahoo web address; It's like a billion
characters long. If someone wants more info about the high school
frisbee league, they can now go to wafc.org and click on "high school
ultimate"
Speaking of wafc.org, you may want to sign up for their email list.
They send maybe two or three emails per month on great topics such as
clinics and rec league deadlines. Sign up at
http://wafc.org/jsp/listserv.jsp
Also the wafc.org site is a good way to find out about pick-up games.
From the home page click on "community" and there is usually a list of
locations that have pick up games.... unfortunately that link doesn't
seem to be working right now...
a good way to have fun and improve skills, with no commitment... the
teachers will be very nice, guaranteed....
On Monday evenings at 5:30 PM this summer, WAFC will be holding a
clinic for new players at the Wallenberg Rugby Field, next to the
Holocaust Museum. Come down and learn the basics: throwing, cutting,
stack offense, zone defense in a supportive, fun environment.
Experienced players are welcome to volunteer as instructors. Send an
email to wafcrecgods@yahoogroups.com if you want to teach.
WAFC is proud to announce Tom Milford of Magruder H.S. as the
recipient of the first WAFC NUTC scholarship!
Tom is a junior at Magruder and was selected from among the many many
great candidates who submitted applications. This was a very tough
choice to make, as there were so many candidates who we know would
represent DC well in Amherst.
As an underclassman, Tom will be able to return next year with the
knowledge and connections gained in Amherst this summer to help not
only his program but the entire WAFC Jr. community.
As Juniors ultimate in the area grows, WAFC pledges to remain
commited, and we hope we can do even more scholarships in the future.
Also, it is not too late to register for camp in Amherst this summer.
Let's try to have as many other DC area players join Tom this summer
so that we can take Jrs. ultimate in DC to the next level!
More info at www.nutc.net
Look for a profile of Tom and a wrap-up of this spring's junior league
in upcoming WAFC newsletters.
Congratulations on a great season, everyone, and congratulations Tom!
-WAFC-
Captains, Please Forward this to your TEAMMATES!!
The deadline for applications for the WAFC Scholarship to the National
Ultimate Training Camp has been extended to
8PM THURSDAY (tomorrow!)
We hope to announce the winner by next Monday so that he/she can make
arrangements accordingly.
The application can be found in the "files" section of the wafcjr yahoogroup.

Best,
WAFC
The final results for the upper and lower brackets and the spirit
awards can be found at:
http://www2.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=17&id=1544http://www2.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=17&id=1545
I have about 15 shirts for the each following teams that could not
attend the awards ceremony:
Blair, GDS, Wilde Lake, Sherwood, Georgetown Prep
The shirts are now stored in my classroom. The New School is near I-66
just outside the beltway and you can make arrangements to pick up the
shirts whenever (although you probably want to do it before school
ends). Shoot me an email to arrange a pick up time.
This season was an enormous success. There were probably 100 core
players at each of the two sites on Sunday. There were around 300
students who played at least one WAFC Jr game this season. In its
second year the league grew from 8 to 18 teams. The awards ceremony
was fantastic (thanks to Dave for arranging the prizes and Jody for
arranging the T-shirts) and there was much clapping and cheering. Stay
tuned because there may be a high school hat tournament in the early
weeks of summer.
Peace,
MattFratt
Yesterday I lent someone a water cooler, that was big and orange with
a spigot at the montgomery hills field. If whoever has it could
please get in contact with me. The name on the top should say Altman
on it, and it might have my phone number, I am not sure. Could
whoever has it get in contact with me, my e-mail address is
matherts@....
-Matthew Altman
if you know the the approximate final score of the following games,
please let me know:
Sherwood vs GDS
Blair vs Wilde Lake
tourney results and looses ends will be posted soon...
there were a bunch of photographers there today... if you post any
photos, please share the link with the group (or even better, post them
on the wafc jr website)
apologies to Landon... they did better than 8th place as announced...
more details later...
Wilson and Landon swapped brackets... so the upper bracket at Sligo now
looks like:
http://www2.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=17&id=1544
And the lower bracket now looks like:
http://www2.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=17&id=1545
Late words is The Heights can actually now attend at Montgomery
Hills... there will likely be some kind of merger between
heights/yorktownJV/new school... we'll figure it out when we get
there....
Remember-
All NUTC Scholarship applications are due by Monday, the 13th, so take
care of it ASAP!
www.nutc.net
Please forward to your teams and good luck this weekend!
Best,
WAFC
The Heights cannot attend the tournament because their team will be in
New Jersey. That brings YorktownHB B team back into the mix. Please
see the slightly revised lower bracket at:
http://www2.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=17&id=1545
Matt alluded to a gift that everyone will recieve at the awards ceremony
on Sunday. So that should be incentive enough to stick around through the
finals and for the awards. Life would be much simpler if you could have a
team roster in hand so we know how many gifts each squad will get. Also,
don't forget to think of a spirit winner and a captain for next year...
So, to recap, on Sunday bring:
Team Roster (at least head count)
Spirit Nominee
'06 Captain/Leader
YOUR A GAME!!
-Jody-
Montgomery Hills is only about 2 miles from Sligo. The fields are
small but playable. Getting to Montgomery Hills is challenging for a
lot of reasons...
First, it's not really called Montgomery Hills School. It used to be,
but then it became Hebrew Academy for a while. I'm not sure what it is
officially called now. What you really need to know is the address:
2010 Linden Ln
Silver Spring, MD 20910
here is the google Map and Satellite view:
http://maps.google.com/maps?
q=2010+Linden+Ln,+Silver+Spring&spn=0.015930,0.023572&hl=en
http://maps.google.com/maps?
q=2010+Linden+Ln,+Silver+Spring&spn=0.022402,0.025578&t=k&hl=en
Here are the driving directions:
Take the Beltway, exit at Georgia Ave, and head south on Georgia
Make a right on Seminary Road. (***not Seminary Place, which you will
see first***)
Continue on Seminary Road for a block and a half.
Continue straight, and the road will become Linden Lane. (Seminary
Road veers to the right)
Continue on Linden Lane for one block.
Brookville Road will fork off to the left; veer left onto Brookville
Road (this is really easy to miss)
Almost immediately on the left is the entrance to the parking lot and
the fields.
The Montgomery Hills fields are .7 miles from the Forest Glen Metro.
***Make it clear to your team that the field is very difficult to find
and they should print out directions***
