Dave - LF called me to inform they have closed the fields to play for this weekend (10/31-11/1) due to standing/pooling water.
I sent this message to Rec & Clique but was not aware Juniors league was interested.
So unfortunately no games can be played at LF this Sunday.
Thx, Kevin

I have not been on Facebook in a couple of days.
Here's what I know just based on email.

Sunday (if it's not too wet) we will have a tourney at Lake Fairfax on the "cricket fields".
I have heard from Herndon, TJ, BoConnell, and BCC, plus a couple YHB teams means we could easily have 6 teams, 3 simeltaneous games.
I suspect we will have even more.
We have room for up to 9 games, (but I dont expect to have that many).

Teams should show up at noon.  We'll play 3 rounds.  It should be over by 3:30.
Each team should bring a bag of candy to put into the pot.
I will give discs out to the winning team and the teams with best spirit and best costumes.

I will be posting stuff on Facebook about cancellations, etc.
Let me know if you have questions.

Dave

This Sunday we have our first fine fall weather set of games.
This will be a little flirtation, a chance to play each other briefly.
The plan is to play 11 - 3, 3 rounds of about an hour, with some time in between to switch fields.

Currently I have heard from BCC, Oakton, and Bishop O Connell.
I can generate 3 YHB teams to make it an even 6 teams, 3 round event.

Anyone else want to get out there and see what they have got?

Right now I have 3 VA and 1 MD so I might move the event from Silgo in Bethesda to HBW in Arlington.
I asked Arlington for the permit, we'll see if we get it.

Let me know if any other schools want in, we can accommodate 2 - 3 more teams.
Playing ultimate is more fun than homework.

Dave

Hey there DC frisbee folks,

School starts tomorrow, time to start playing ulti with your friends, building your teams.
Here's what's going on ultimate wise for you(th) this fall in WAFC.

Fall is a great time to play ultimate which makes it a great time to recruit new players, build teams.
If you have friends at other schools who are playing get them in contact with me so we can get them in the league too!
When the weather is nice, before the homework mounts, get out there and play.
You have 4 weeks to build up your team till the Fall Brawl.

That's a tournament we will be hosting on Sunday October 4th.
It will be 3 games, 11am - 3pm.
We can host up to 8 teams at Silgo and if there is demand we can run separate divisions at other fields.

I expect that event will only ramp up demand and we will host an even bigger event Nov 1st.
Its the day after Halloween so it will be called the Candy Calorie Consumer.
We'll talk before hand but the CCC may involve lots of halloween themes (Costume prizes, Candy exchanges).
Because you'll be recovering from your halloween sugar rushes that will start later (12 - 4pm)
We have the permit for Lake Fairfax that day so we can run a seperate NoVA division.

In addition to these 2 team events there is the option for the captains rea ding this email to play a little high level "club" ultimate.
Sept 19th and 20th are Club Sectionals in Upperville VA. This is a 2 day tournament for colleges and college graduates who play at a very high level.
If you would like to join the varsity players from YHB we have entered teams in the open and women's divisions at club sectionals.
We dont normally win a lot of games but we learn alot playing against these stronger older teams.
We can still add players to our rosters. Contact me right away if you are interested in playing at this level.
Upperville is about an hour outside DC, this is not an overnight commitment.

Other events to think about entering your team in this fall are
Oct 24th Kit Kat – Philadelphia Area Disc Alliance's 1 Day Tourney
Nov 7, 8th  Tidewater Tune Up – Williamsburg, VA
Dec 12th – Sue Inge Memorial in Richmond, hosted by LC Bird.

Search around on line for those events.  They are all well run tourneys that my teams have been going to for years.

With the start of the new year I am going to try a new effort at organizing, data collecting.
Fill out this survey
http://tinyurl.com/WAFCJR
This should ease communication within the league.

Looking forward to seeing you on the fields,
Dave

ok here is the new plan
Herdon and Washington Latin are out.
Bowie, BCC and TJ are in.
in order to fit everyone in i am going to ask BCC and Urbana to only bring 1 team, sorry.
Since the group is now more homogenous (W Latin was a totally new team)
I am going to mix them all together as 1 big pool.
1 hour games, 3 games, play through to 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th places.
I will attach a schedule but I bet it will get all messed up in terms of formatting, columns.

see you Sunday.

1 - 2        Urbana X v Churchill       JDS v TJ           BCC v Bowie    Blair v Magruder
2:10 - 3:10    Win A vs Win B    Lose A v Lose B    W C vs W D    L C vs L D
3:20 - 4:30    Double Winners    Won 1, Lost 1       Lost 1, Won 1    Bring it on!

I have only had about 8 school contact me about playing this weekend.
Which works nicely because we can host 8 teams at Silgo all at once.
We will do 2 pools based on where I think schools stand
Urbana, Herndon, Churchill and JDS (welcome back to that last one)
Urbana B, Magruder, Blair and a new school Washington Latin.

All teams will play 1 game 1 - 2:30 then winners will match winners, losers v losers 2:30 - 4.
It should be so hot that 2 game should be enough.  I would say play to 11.  See how it goes.
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pn4RNZWWBoXe4-9ZKY5tqZQ&output=html

If there are other teams that want in on this (WTW? TJ? BCC?) they should let me know asap and if I get enough I will reshuffle things.

Montgomery Blair thinks that May31st would work for one game. Not sure everyone

I updated this a few weeks ago but then never got it out.
Still I have had a lot of requests for information so hopefully there are still lots of needy kids interested.
See the attached application for this summers WAFC scholarship to NUTC.
Please feel free to forward on to your players.

Also relevant WAFC will be sponsoring a summer camp for high schoolers here in DC.
No overnight lodging, no meals so just 250$ for a week of ultimate in Arlington with YHB Coaches.
Contact will.smolinski@... if you are interested in that.

If your team has not melted away in the summer heat we are planning on providing one more weekend of ultimate.
May 31st we will offer 2 games to all interested teams.
Let me know if you school is down for it and I will try to set up some brackets, see if we can settle just who is the champs for 2009.

Eat Malaysian and enjoy the weather,

Ignore times, and fields on the UPA Score Reporter site, it filled all of that out automatically, and is not accurate to the actual schedule or order of games.  It will be changed today, once the attendance of YHB C(Open) has been confirmed.  All open pool play will happen on Saturday, only the championship bracket and Consolation brackets will happen on Sunday.

2009 VA States is here!!!  I am so excited, since as some of ya'll know I missed Eastern's because of being sick.  I am almost at 100%, and will be by this weekend.

Seeding and Pools are published now:

Girls:
http://www.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=121&id=5961

Open:
http://www.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=121&id=6018

I am still tweaking the schedule but here are the highlights(PLEASE READ, because some times have changed slightly):

Saturday:
7:45 - Registration Opens
8:30 - Captains Meeting
9:00 - First Round begins(We needed to push this back 30 minutes to move the schedule along)
5:00 - Dinner and Games(Fun, YTBD)
6:00 - Girls Finals

Sunday:
9:00 - Open B Pool Last Round
10:30 - Championship Bracket & C Bracket start play
2:15 - Open Finals

Dinner will be provided for players on Saturday, and the Concession stand will be open all weekend.

There will be no T-Shirts this year, but we have 2 times the amount of State Discs we had last year, because we sold out early on Saturday.  Remind your players not to wait until the last moment to get a disc, because they might be gone.

I think that is it for now.

It is less than 2 weeks away.  Brackets, and the schedule will be published on Monday.  With that said, I can't do brackets without knowing all the teams that are coming. Below are the teams I have confirmed as coming.  If you aren't on this list and are bringing a team, e-mail me ASAP.  If I don't here from you by Friday, you will not be included in the schedule.  Also, please send me School name, and City, as you would like it displayed on the T-shirts if I pull them off(Even if you think I should know it for your school).

Open:
LCB A
LCB B
Woodside A
Woodside B
YHB A
YHB B/C
Woodson
Maggie Walker
Girls:
LCB
Woodside A
Woodside B
YHB A
YHB B
YHB C
Woodson

Fees Reminder:
Tournament Fees:
$120 per 1st team, $80 per team for every team after that from the same school.  Checks made payable to Ray Heath.
UPA Fees:
If by the Friday May 14th, the player is showing as not paying UPA dues, They MUST pay me on Saturday morning, with a signed waiver form in order to play.  I will not accept one check for a whole team for UPA dues, because that was a paperwork nightmare last year.  I need the money per player, paper clipped/attached to a waiver, to make sure the UPA gets it in a form they can use.  Checks made Payable to UPA.

Thanks,
Ray

Hello Everybody,
It’s that time...and boy its coming quick. Let’s get down to business.
Teams I have attending currently(If you aren't on this list contact me ASAP w/ division and # of teams):
Open:
Woodside A
Woodside B
LCB A
LCB B
YHB A
YHB B
YHB C (I know we are doing some funny stuff Dave…we will get that straight later)
WUT
Monacan

Girls:
YHB A
YHB B
Woodside A
Woodside B
WUT
LCB

The tournament is still May 16/17, at LCB. Girls will only be playing on Saturday May 16, Final under the lights, on the main field Saturday Evening. I have no issues with them picking up with their perspective B-Team's on Sunday, at the coaches discretion. Open will be both days, and we will be playing at LCB, and Salem Middle like the past 2 years(3 Fields at both schools). There will be food(Pizza/Subs) Saturday Evening out at the fields if the temperature permits, while watching the girls Final's and Various competitions: Freestyle, Pull, Tree, RPS, and Sprint(I am up for other suggestions, and need people to be in charge of them…Christian?).

School address:
LC Bird High School
10301 Courthouse Rd
Chesterfield VA, 23832
Times:
Registration will begin at 8AM Saturday Morning to allow paperwork to be verified. Captains Meeting at 8:45, at the registration table. One captain from each team is REQUIRED to attend. First game Saturday will be at 9:30.

Rosters:
All players must be registered with the UPA, and you must make an online Roster, on UPA's site. Membership payments and Waiver can be given to me the day of the tournament, but ALL players MUST have a UPA ID, and be added to your Roster, prior to 12 Noon on May 13th. Once you have the Roster, you can submit it to the Tournament, therefore allowing me to verify it, and make sure you are good to go.

Each team is allowed no more than 3 players from another school. That doesn't mean if you have a A-Team and a B-Team that you are allowed to play 4 players from another school on your A-Team. That is 3 players from another school per Roster. If I find out there has been an abuse of this, without previously getting approval from me, your team WILL be disqualified from States. So if you think this is going to be an issue, please contact me ASAP.

There is no $5 event/One time option; ALL players must be UPA members.  I will accept a completed/signed waiver and $20 the day of the tournament, but no group checks for membership fees.  Money must be separated per waiver.  The big group checks were a real hassle last year for the membership fees.  If I cannot verify their status via the Roster on Friday, then I will need the above in order for them to play.  If there needs to be a refund the UPA will handle.

Money:
The cost is $120 for the 1st team from each school, and $80 per additional. Make checks payable to Ray Heath. I MUST have your check/money before the start of play on Saturday you’re your team will not be playing.  I do not want to be hunting anybody down to get their money.  Address to send checks to:

2013 Cambridge Dr
Richmond VA, 23238

Food:
I will be supplying for Each team:
2 Jugs of water
Bananas
Peanut Butter
Bread
The Refreshment stand at the stadium will be open both Saturday and Sunday. Pizza/Sub Party will be supplied Saturday night.

Swag:
State Disc's will be sold at the Refreshment stand for $10 a piece. There will also be shirts, but not sure of the cost/colors yet.

Alright,

It is less than 2 weeks away.  Brackets, and the schedule will be published on Monday.  With that said, I can't do brackets without knowing all the teams that are coming. Below are the teams I have confirmed as coming.  If you aren't on this list and are bringing a team, e-mail me ASAP.  If I don't here from you by Friday, you will not be included in the schedule.  Also, please send me School name, and City, as you would like it displayed on the T-shirts if I pull them off(Even if you think I should know it for your school).

Open:

Woodside B
YHB A
YHB B/C

Thanks,
Ray

YHB A
YHB B
Woodside A
Woodside B
WUT

Also, the bracket isn't up.  I assume that it's going to seed like a normal bracket? A1 v B4,  B2 vs A3 on one side and B1 vs A4, A2 vs B3 on the other.

Alright,

It is less than 2 weeks away.  Brackets, and the schedule will be published on Monday.  With that said, I can't do brackets without knowing all the teams that are coming. Below are the teams I have confirmed as coming.  If you aren't on this list and are bringing a team, e-mail me ASAP.  If I don't here from you by Friday, you will not be included in the schedule.  Also, please send me School name, and City, as you would like it displayed on the T-shirts if I pull them off(Even if you think I should know it for your school).

Open:

$120 per 1st team, $80 per team for every team after that from the same school.  Checks made payable to Ray Heath.
UPA Fees:
If by the Friday May 14th, the player is showing as not paying UPA dues, They MUST pay me on Saturday morning, with a signed waiver form in order to play.  I will not accept one check for a whole team for UPA dues, because that was a paperwork nightmare last year.  I need the money per player, paper clipped/attached to a waiver, to make sure the UPA gets it in a form they can use.  Checks made Payable to UPA.

Also,
Just like last year, Brandon Wu will be with us taking pictures.  He took some great ones last year, so be sure to take a look at his website http://www.bwuphoto.com, and support a fellow player, who just happens to be really good with a camera.

Ray

Alright,

It is less than 2 weeks away.  Brackets, and the schedule will be published on Monday.  With that said, I can't do brackets without knowing all the teams that are coming. Below are the teams I have confirmed as coming.  If you aren't on this list and are bringing a team, e-mail me ASAP.  If I don't here from you by Friday, you will not be included in the schedule.  Also, please send me School name, and City, as you would like it displayed on the T-shirts if I pull them off(Even if you think I should know it for your school).

Open:

Girls:

Thanks,
Ray

we will not play for the 2 weeks after this.
UPA states next weekend, then Memorial Day.
If you want to play the following weekend (May 31) let me know.
I expect that a few teams may not be available then so the remaining teams should have enough field space for at least double headers.
We can try to make up for the missed tourney experience of this past rainy weekend.

I was previously contacted by a team from the Eastern Shore.  We talked about having an event this weekend.
I devoted Bowie to playing with them in Anapolis this weekend.  They should get some info to Bowie to make this happen.
The contact for Bowie is kory.kinney@...,

Please contact Farrell <fsullivanjr@...> if you are planning on
attending but haven't let him know yet.
Here is the basic information:

Hello all,
Saturday, May 16th, Catonsville, MD (Sunday, May 17th for semi's/finals if there
are too many teams to run this tournament in a day as we have the last two
years). Please respond as to your intensions for this tournament. If you
are not sure you'll have your team together by then, that's fine, just let me
know. Let me know if you're definitely in, maybe in or definitely out. With
your response include.. Your Name:Your School:Which division/s your school
will be fielding a team for: 1) Open (guys and/or girls, no ratios on the
field)2) Mixed (ratio of 4 guys and 3 girls or vice versa on the field, offense
dictates the girl/guy 4/3 ratio, the defense has to match)3) Girls (all girls)
Teams will be listed here as they are added to the
tournamenthttp://www.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?&div=121scroll down to May 16th to
see the Maryland tournament's; Open, Mixed, Girls (not set up yet)

One thing all players at the HS Championships will have do do prior to playing
is to join the UPA. It's required of all players for insurance compliance among
other things. Many tournaments throughout the year require all players to be UPA
members so their tournament can be covered by the UPA insurance policy.
*** Membership is $20.00 for youth players. Here is the link to
joinhttp://www.upa.org/membership
*** Roster - Each team will need to fill out a team roster; a medical form and a
chaperone form. Here is the link for dealing with that.
http://www.upa.org/juniors/championships/rostering_101
*** There will be a tournament team entry fee also. The team entry fee will be
as minimum as possible to cover the costs of water, facilities, etc. This is not
a for profit tournament, in fact we usually lose money. If you have a team
contact from a HS not listed in the header, please pass it along to me so they
can get added to this distribution list and recieve upcoming info about the
State Championships. This list is also useful for you to get a hold of current
team contacts in the state that you might like to get together with for an
informal scrimmage. If you are no longer the contact for your team, plaease send
along the new contact.
*** I ordered about 75 extra HS Championship discs which will be for sale (see
attachment) at the tournament for very low cost.
more info later,
Farrell

Here is this weeks schedule
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pn4RNZWWBoXe4-9ZKY5tqZQ

The top 6 are meeting at Occoquon on Saturday for 3 games. (if anyone else wants to join them they can)
The 2nd 8 are meeting at Silgo on Sunday for 3 games
The B teams and new teams and middle schoolers and girls are meeting for 2 games at a variety of locations.

Because there are multiple games it is important to be on time.
If you start late you will not only be inconsiderate to your opponents you could throw off the whole event.

In general I gave you 10 - 20 min to get organized to start your event and 10 min to switch between games.
Games generally last 70 - 90 min depending on how much time I had available at that field.
I would say you should generally play to 9 points.
If you round ends and you haven't gotten to 9 you should finish the point you are on and then the game is over.
If you finish that point and it happens to be tied play one more to decide the winner.
(this is what the 10 min buffer between rounds is for)

IF YOU CANT PLAY ALL OF YOUR GAMES LET ME KNOW IMMEDIATELY
Email me if you have any questions,
Dave

I had to do some finagling.
A bracket: No Changes except Magruder was moved to 1 - 3 as per their request.
B Bracket : Blair is moved to 3 - 5 this week and YHB B got cancelled.  Paint Branch and WMill are now playing eachother at Mont Hills.  That's a change for PBranch.
C Bracket: To my understanding Blake was a no-show last week so if that happens again then Blair will play Heights.  If Blake shows then Heights will only have a single header and its Blake vs Blair.  Unless of course JDS flakes in which case we'll have to reconfigure everything.  That's what things are like in C division.

But I will be there to help.  For the first time this season, when its nice weather, I am not going to be away.
So I will be around to help set things up and hand out discs.
I will not give you discs unless you have paid and have waivers.
If you bring a sizable contingent of parents I will give you even more discs.
I will also be giving out information on your ultimate summer camp options (NUTC and CUC).

Looking forward to seeing you then, making up answers to questions you might have.
Bring lots of water, its going to be warm.

Dave

I got some feedback from some teams and put together some divisions, matchups based on what I had.
Almost all games are at Silgo.  Top 8 teams 11 - 1.  Middle 12.5 teams 1 - 3. Bottom 7 teams 3 - 5.
In order to deal with the crowding in the middle some of them are at Montgomery Hills, as are the ladies 3 - 5.

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pn4RNZWWBoXe4-9ZKY5tqZQ

For Saturday May 2nd I put top/VA teams together out at Occoquon.
Because of the space that creates other teams will get to play a Tourney on May 3rd at Silgo or MHills.
Some B division teams will get Double headers earlier to help balance things.

I have discs to give out.  I will be there April 26th to do so.
Bring parents out to watch, cheer that day and I will give you extra discs.

We are welcoming 2 new teams who have contacted me recently StoneBridge and Oakton.
I put them in playing some A some B.   I will try to contact them directly to make sure they are in.
If they (OR ANYBODY) knows they can't field a team one weekend let me know ASAP and I will finagle stuff.

Also we have been contacted by teams from the outer DC world, teams from Annapolis and the Eastern Shore.
I am communicating with them to put on an event out there.
Bowie is closest to them so Bowie will go scrimmage them May 10th
and report back to how ultimate is growing around the bay.

I will check back in with folks in Mid May about the 31st.
Hopefully by then we will have more results and some teams may move up or down accordingly.

Rock on,
Dave

Hope everyone is having a good spring break or whatever you are up to.

I need to figure out some matchups for the rest of the season.
So I need some data from you
1) What level do you think would be best for your team(s) A, B or C

2) What games did you play so far?  Win or Lose?
What was the score? (blowouts are more decisive, more indicative than 2 point victories)

3) Any weekends you wont be available to play.
Right now I am thinking about April 19, 26, May 3, 10, and 31
I am not planning any games on May 17 b/c of UPA states and May 24 b/c of Memorial Day

May 2,3 - I was planning to have most teams come down to Occoquon May 2 for a tourney
But now the park is only offering 4 fields instead of 6 - 8.
So I am thinking we will still try to do some games there, maybe for the top 8 teams and have other folks meet elsewhere.
B/c we will have 8 teams there that will create extra space at silgo, everyone else can do double, maybe triple headers Sunday May 3.
Multiple games can be pretty tough,
Let me know how many you think your team would be fired up for come early May.

once I get results, plans from most teams I will have more info out for you fearless captain type people

Connor,

I appreciate your eagerness, but please don't reply to all on this e-mail.
Discuss teams amongst the WAFC Jr group.

Thanks,
Ray

Hello Everybody,
It's that time...and boy its coming quick. Let's get down to business.
Teams I have attending currently(If you aren't on this list contact me ASAP w/
division and # of teams):
Open:
  Woodside A
  Woodside B
  LCB A
  LCB B
  YHB A
  YHB B
YHB C (I know we are doing some funny stuff Dave...we will get that straight
later)
WUT
  Monacan

Girls:
YHB A
YHB B
Woodside A
Woodside B
WUT
LCB
The tournament is still May 16/17, at LCB. Girls will only be playing on
Saturday May 16, Final under the lights, on the main field Saturday Evening. I
have no issues with them picking up with their perspective B-Team's on Sunday,
at the coaches discretion. Open will be both days, and we will be playing at
LCB, and Salem Middle like the past 2 years(3 Fields at both schools). There
will be food(Pizza/Subs) Saturday Evening out at the fields if the temperature
permits, while watching the girls Final's and Various competitions: Freestyle,
Pull, Tree, RPS, and Sprint(I am up for other suggestions, and need people to be
in charge of them...Christian?).
School address:
LC Bird High School
  10301 Courthouse Rd
  Chesterfield VA, 23832
Times:
Registration will begin at 8AM Saturday Morning to allow paperwork to be
verified. Captains Meeting at 8:45, at the registration table. One captain from
each team is REQUIRED to attend. First game Saturday will be at 9:30.
Rosters:
All players must be registered with the UPA, and you must make an online
Roster, on UPA's site. Membership payments and Waiver can be given to me the day
of the tournament, but ALL players MUST have a UPA ID, and be added to your
Roster, prior to 12 Noon on May 13th. Once you have the Roster, you can submit
it to the Tournament, therefore allowing me to verify it, and make sure you are
good to go.
Each team is allowed no more than 3 players from another school. That doesn't
mean if you have a A-Team and a B-Team that you are allowed to play 4 players
from another school on your A-Team. That is 3 players from another school per
Roster. If I find out there has been an abuse of this, without previously
getting approval from me, your team WILL be disqualified from States. So if you
think this is going to be an issue, please contact me ASAP.
There is no $5 event/One time option; ALL players must be UPA members.  I will
accept a completed/signed waiver and $20 the day of the tournament, but no group
checks for membership fees.  Money must be separated per waiver.  The big group
checks were a real hassle last year for the membership fees.  If I cannot verify
their status via the Roster on Friday, then I will need the above in order for
them to play.  If there needs to be a refund the UPA will handle.
Money:
The cost is $120 for the 1st team from each school, and $80 per additional.
Make checks payable to Ray Heath. I MUST have your check/money before the start
of play on Saturday you're your team will not be playing.  I do not want to be
hunting anybody down to get their money.
There will
also be shirts, but not sure of the cost/colors yet.
