I am new to the forum so I wanted to share a little about my martial arts career. My name is Joel Bain and I live the United States. I tried some other styles of karate and also a little judo before I found out about Wado-Ryu. I loved it from the start. Under the instruction of Sensei Joseph B. Rippy (6th Dan), I earned the rank of 1st Dan in 1988. For personal and career reasons, I stopped practicing karate for several years. Nagging injuries contributed to this as well. In the mid 90's I took up tai chi and continue to practice that on a regular basis. I am now practicing all my karate forms again, and am hoping to locate a sensei for private and/or group instruction. My efforts to locate Sensei Rippy have been unsuccessful. He was, without a doubt, the best instructor that I have ever had. The several posts about Wado-Ryu dvd's caught my
attention. I am now looking to order these to help continue in my practice. It does not look like I am going to locate Mr. Rippy, but I am going to continue practicing in Wado-ryu again. I live in the Eastern part of Tennessee and there are no Wado-Ryu instructors that I know of in this area. There are many in West Tennessee. This may be where I will have to travel in order to receive further instruction. The dvd's will help though. Thanks to all of you for the posts about them.

Thanks. I did that almost two months ago. Sensei Patterson got wind of my continued search and emailed me back. He forwarded my email to Mr. Rippy at that time. It appears that Mr. Rippy may have my contact info, but has requested that Sensei Patterson not give his email address out to others. His phone is also non-listed. So I will hope to hear from him, but will move forward with my training one way or the other. If one is training with a true heart and only for the sake of training in itself, that is how it has to be anyway.

Depending on where you are in east TN you may be able to get to some of the Wado
people in middle TN. Mike Vannatta who answered you message below is a very
good instructor who trained with Mr Rippy Back In the Day. There are also wado
people in SC, but they are pretty far away in Columbis and are a different
group. So depending on your geography you can try one of them.
You're gonna need training partners an access to a syllabus that supports
distance learning. If you start a study group you might be able to train with
the SC people periodically and make some satisfactory progress. Mr Vannatta's
programme is more for the regular attendee, but I he has accepted me during
infrequent visits.
Study on your own is not generally a good thing, whatever your heart is like. I
would even recommend trying something altogether different that has good
instruction rather than flailing at wado as a 21 year shodan.
Knoxville has bound to have some legit arts to study due to the UT. Maybe
something is there.

I agree that training on my own is not a good thing. It causes too many opportunities to develop bad habits without correction. As far as changing to another style goes, I like this style too much for that. I'll figure out a way to make it work, and without "flailing" being involved.

It would be quite a drive, but I am sure that Sensei Kirby in Portland, TN would welcome you to come train when you could. I am a shodan there. He is not far from Sensei Vanatta. We have had visitors there before that I have never seen nor have seen since. I would give him a call if you are interested. Here is the number for the dojo 615-323-0365. If you want his email just let me know...I will have to look that up. Also, Mr. Kirby does do some training at UT periodically, but it is mostly Iado. I know he knows some instructors out that way.

In that case you could try Donnie Danner. He is affiliated in some way with Bob
Nash of this forum. I have not met Donnie, but if Bob will have him, then, as a
mutual acquaintance would say, he must not suck too badly.
Donnie Danner used to be in Joelton, which is actually closer to you by time
than Mr Kirby.

Donnie doesn't suck at all, on the opposite he is one of the finest instructors of Wado Gusekai, and a very nice guy, too.

I would third the call for Donnie Danner. I have know and trained with Donnie
frequently for a lot of years. As Claudio said, very nicen but scary on the
floor, and an exceptional instructor.
Just make assumptions about how a big guy should move. It can be painful.
