Why?
He was still young when he went Westward...

What can you possibly know at 23 (or whatever age he was)?
I am sure there must be others but Suzuki Sensei is the only person I
know who came to West from Japan with a decent amount of experience
under his belt. Almost everyone else learned 'on the job' so to speak.
Most of the Japanese who emigrated to Europe went to train under
Suzuki Sensei for that very reason, no? They were only versed in
collegiate kumite.
It doesn't help that Wado is so complicated.
