I tried to start a thread related to this some time ago. I have an instructional
DVD done by Choki Motobu's Son (or grandson?) and one of the sections is all
about Naihanchi. That's the only kata covered in the DVD and of course the
Matobu affinity for Naihanchi is well known.
The guy himself seemed somewhat sloppy and not crisp at all, but he was
definately an elderly man. At any rate the moves were very close to the Wado
version but his interpretation was very different at some points than what I've
heard before.
The one point I remember off the top of my head is that he called the foot sweep
motions a hidden technique. He said in fact it represents a front kick in very
close quarters, but the actual "kick" aspect was hidden. I'd heard sweep, sweep
avoidance and block but never front-kick. There was one other "hidden technique"
but I can't recall it at the moment. According to this son of Choki Matobu,
these were Motobu's own explanations of the kata handed down to him.
