there a difference between a "gata" and a "kata" or is it simply 2 ways to
translate the same word?

Hello,

For clarification.......

The kata I demonstrated in Taunton were from the SYR kuzushi no kata. As far as
I know Ohtsuka never performed them in their original form. However, these SYR
kata were obviously the inspiration for some of Ohtsuka's 36 kumite gata. The
similarity is plainly obvious.
