All,

This Friday (11/27) we will be meeting at the fridge at 9am for a relatively short (less than 90 minute) workout. Derek will be there and the fridge will be open, and we will do some circuits on the track as well. Everyone (girls and boys) are encouraged to come, and if you are doing another sport that doesn't practice Friday morning we hope to see you there as well. Have a happy thanksgiving, but don't let the holiday get you out of shape!

All,

George Kirschbaum '87 who lives on Washington Blvd. between George Mason and Swanson Middle is in need of some leaf raking. He would like 4 volunteers and will pay $25 per person to W-L Crew Boosters to go towards fundraising.

Please let me know asap. He would like to get this done this Saturday. It only requires raking and dragging leaves to the curb. His estimate it should only take about 1-1.5 hours.

Hello all-

Just wanted to let you know that JL Racing has their polypropylene tights on sale for $20 instead of the usual $40 until black friday. To novice rowers and parents especially, these are a really nice item to have for outdoor workouts during winter conditioning and especially for the cold days on the water in February and March. JL clothes are as good as it gets for rowing but they are expensive so this is definitely a good opportunity to get a pair if you need them.

West Potomac, at 6500 Quander Road, Alexandria, VA 22307, is a
multi-building campus. We will be in the auditorium of Springbank, a
standalone building on the left as you face the school. It has its own
parking lot. If you come off Route #1 onto Quander Rd, take the second
entrance to the school (right turn at the low brick school sign on the
corner, not at the pylon sign). If you are coming off Beacon Hill/Belle
View Boulevard onto Quander Rd, take a left at the 1st entrance to the
school. The parking lot is the first one on your left, next to
Springbank.

If you do enter at the pylon sign, just drive all the way in until you
have to turn left ... you will then be facing the Springbank Building.
The parking lot is to the left.

More perspective on college athletics from a Kay Herring, mother of former rower Scott.....

-------- Original Message --------

Yes, this is important.   There are NCAA enforced guidelines for college visits, summer jobs, and for other contacts which are seldom violated by colleges but can be by well-meaning alumni.

Parents of scholar-athletes need to know that their child is taking on a responsibility akin to a job that will take up to 36-hours per week, with some absences from class (which not all professors tolerate well), with some control by the athletic dept. over how many and which courses a student may take, and with real limitations on academic break activities (e.g. practice during winter and spring breaks preclude jobs, interviews, experiential travel). The 36 hours is NCAA’s limitation on the amount of time the students may be required to participate in practice and team meetings.  I know it’s true for track and for crew.  I assume it’s a blanket guideline.

I don’t think Scott has had this problem of absence from class for sanctioned travel, but his sister was prevented from graduating summa by a professor who dropped her course grade as a result of a class absence for a competition (the competition that won the conference tournament).   We’ll see what happens when he goes to San Diego this spring.

On the up side—athletic departments monitor grades, require study halls, and if used properly provide good general conditioning, and arrange priority registration for classes.

My recommendation is that sophomore parents need this and junior parents must have it.

What: Navigating College Admissions, Financial Aid and NCAA Athletics

When: 10 AM, November 21, 2009

Where: West Potomac HS Auditorium - 6500 Quander Lane, Alexandria, VA

Dr. Harvey Kesselman, Dean of Education at the Richard Stockton College
of New Jersey, will present information on college and university
admissions procedure, financial aid availability and options, and NCAA
requirements and restrictions. This is a most worthwhile presentation
that imparts most the information that parents of high school student
athletes (and the athletes) need to know.

Preparing for college:
Attend your high school College and Financial Aid Night
Utilize your high school Guidance Department Services
Allow plenty of time for completion of forms and copies

Students entering college need 16 core high school courses:
4 years of English
3 years of mathematics (Algebra 1 or higher)
2 years of natural / physical science (one must be a lab science)
1 year of additional English, mathematics, or science
2 years of social studies
4 years of additional core courses (in any area listed above, a foreign
language, or non-doctrinal religion or philosophy)

Prior to his current position, Dr. Kesselman served as Interim Vice
President for Administration and Finance, the Vice President for Student
Affairs, and several other key positions at the Richard Stockton College
since 1980.

Dr. Kesselman has been appointed by four New Jersey governors to
represent all the senior public colleges and universities on several
statewide issues that included student financial aid, campus judicial
affairs, outcomes assessment, and the infusion of technology into the
curriculum of educational institutions. He founded and chairs the
SRI-ETTC Consortium that includes more than 24,000 educators from 90
school districts, and provides technology training and other forms of
professional development to kindergarten-I2'n grade educators in central
and southern New Jersey.

Dr. Kesselman and his wife, Lynne, worked to establish the Greater Egg
Harbor Regional Crew programs. Their daughter, Megan, rowed four years
in high school and now is rowing at Princeton University. Megan is also
a volunteer coach with the Atlantic City Rowing Club. Their son, Aaron,
is in high school in New Hampshire and plays junior ice hockey. He had
rowed two years.

The W-L Crew coaching staff would like to invite rowing alumni to work out with the team during our winter conditioning program. We feel that your addition will provide motivation to our younger rowers and give you an opportunity to reconnect with the team, or show off your college gear.

This invitation is for working out, not socializing. We request that all alumni contact the coaching staff prior to attending. You are welcome to do our workout, or follow the plan that your college coach has given you. We look forward to you joining us.

Hello All,

A little update for all regarding Winter Conditioning.  Conditioning normally runs from 3:30 to 5:30 pm.  However when we are using the weight room the practice time adjusts and goes until 6pm.  This is to accommodate teams that are in season.  Unfortunately I can not change this as this came down from the strength coach we use for conditioning.  The boys and girls teams use the weight room ever other week on Monday's, Wednesday's and Friday's.  This week falls on the girls team.  Winter Conditioning is not mandatory but highly encouraged.  If your athletes needs to leave early or show late.  it is best to let their coach know of this.  This becomes good practice for the season in the Spring.  Thanks and sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi Derek;

Its a Concept 2 Model D, with a PM-3 monitor.  I've had it for a few years, but its been lightly used; has a little over a million meters on it.
The new ones sell for $900; I'd like to get $750 for mine.  I can deliver it, but might have to ask for some gas money depending on the address.
