This would be a wonderful way to get this done and out of the way. If you haven't already taken care of this please do so through your heath care provider or think about taken this option.

The cost is $30.00. All that is needed is a parent signed VHSL physical form and a check to W-L for $30. Please advertise this offering to as many athletes as you can. VHSL physical form is attached.

Dear W-L Crew Athletes and Parents,

Ergs (from Coach Paul Holland pah96@... )

For those team members who borrowed ergs during the summer and fall, it is time to return them.  We would like to have them returned next Tuesday, November 4.  Coach Wilson and Coach Davis will be on the Quincy St. side of the old school to receive the ergs between 4 and 5 PM.  Please make arrangements to return them on this day because winter training will start the following Monday.  Those rowers with ergs are:

Springston, Eakes, Nguyen, Oleynik, Jenkins, Zekan, Perrow, Kelleher, Johnson, Dubow, Conklin

Poinsettias and Wreaths (from chair Myra Probasco basco5860@...)

A reminder that the deadline for orders for wreaths and poinsettias is November 10.  This would be a great weekend to get out there and reach the informal goal of 15 items sold.  If you need order forms:

1. forms for local (Arlington) orders of rower-delivered poinsettias and wreaths are available in Ms. Harrick's room (#2213) or from Mrs. Probasco at the email above.

2. forms for mail orders of wreaths, to be sent anywhere in the U.S., can be downloaded from the Booster website at http://www.w-lcrewboosters.org/files/forms/holiday-sales-order-receipt.pdf
If you want to personalize your mail order form before you email it to friends and relatives, Mrs. Probasco can send you a Word file version of the form.

Thanks.

   Hello Coaches,

I hope you will consider sharing the following information with your female rowers:

On Saturday, November 15th, in conjunction with an Admissions Open House, the Mason's Women's Rowing Team will host an information session for high caliber high school junior and senior rowers.  Your rowers will have an opportunity to meet with current Mason rowers, speak with coaches and learn more about the Mason athletic recruitment and admissions process.

The information session will begin at 11:30am, conclude at 12:30pm and will be followed by the Admissions Open House from 1pm to 4pm.

George Mason University and our women's rowing team have undergone some extraordinary changes and improvements over the past few years.  With a #1 ranking from US News and World Report's "Universities to Watch" and 2 consecutive CAA Conference Championship titles, our university and team are growing in size and prominence.  I think your rowers will be pleasantly surprised by all of the positive changes here on campus.  The only way to get to know Mason is to visit.

I will attach our flier to this email for you to review.

Your rowers may RSVP to me at egallag1@... for directions and further information.

Thank you for your time!

Dear Coach,

My name is AJ Miller and I am the recruiting coordinator for the Bucknell University Women’s Rowing.  You probably received a letter or email from me during the summer months telling you about our Junior/Senior Days through August and Sept.  Well, they were awesome!  We’ve added two dates focused solely on seniors in the days before applications are due.

I would like to invite you and your senior girls to visit the Bucknell campus for one of our Senior Days on November 8th and November 15th.  Attending a Senior Day is a thorough introduction to Bucknell and our rowing program.  You and your rowers will have the opportunity to attend an Admissions Preview Session, tour the campus, meet some of the rowers, and have a question/answer session with me and Head Coach Steve Kish.  The day starts at 9:30am and runs until 2:30pm.

We will also be hosting three Junior Days through winter and spring.  Those dates are February 28th, April 4th and June 20th.  These will be geared towards the earlier stages of the recruitment process.

Click here for the full informational flyer for our Senior and Junior Days.  There is also a printable flyer if you would like to post the invitation in your facility.

Please contact me to talk about your promising juniors/seniors visiting campus.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Coach AJ Miller

-------------------------

Academically, Bucknell is unique.  With 3,400 students and a student-faculty ratio of 11-to-1, Bucknell combines the personal feel and attention of a small college, but has the academic and athletic resources of a large university.  In addition to a broad liberal arts college curriculum with 50 majors and 60 minors, we also offer strong professional programs in engineering, business, education, and music performance. To top it off, Bucknell has one of the safest and most beautiful campuses in the country.

Athletically, our women's rowing program provides one of the most balanced and exciting opportunities available in college athletics.  We do quite a bit of sculling during the fall season and during the spring our roster of 60-70 women focuses on openweight and lightweight eights and fours.  Our fall schedule is unique in regards to its flexibility, designed to encourage a balanced lifestyle uncommon in Division I athletics.  In the classroom, our team is always in the top 2 in the Athletics Department for the highest GPA.  In 2006-2007, our first year rowers and coxswains achieved a 3.67 GPA, the best of all 27 varsity sports at Bucknell, a remarkable feat!

In the spring of ‘07, our team swept the varsity events at the ECAC Metro Regatta as well as the Patriot League Championship.  Our Varsity Lightweight 8+ won the 2007 IRA National Championship.  We also competed against crews from Princeton, Penn and Dartmouth, coming away with a few victories.

This spring has been another breakthrough season for Bucknell Women’s Rowing.  We raised the bar by adding top 10 schools like UVA, Ohio, Tennessee, and Michigan to our schedule. We won our 3rd consecutive Patriot League Team Championship and our 2nd consecutive Northeast Regional Team Championship.  We also had our first ever experience racing at the Eastern Sprint Regatta, where our Varsity 8 had an incredible stroke for stroke race against Dartmouth.  The Sprints ended with Bucknell ranked 8th ahead of Cornell, Syracuse, Northeastern, Navy, and Columbia.  Our Varsity Lightweight 8 finished 4th in the 2008 IRA Grand Final.  We compete every 4 years in the Henley Women’s Regatta, and this year we came back from England with some great racing experience. Bucknell alumni rowers have also gone on to compete at the World Championships and the Olympics.

Please come out to join us on one of our Junior/Senior Days.  I look forward to meeting you.

Everyone,

Now that learn to row program is over it's time to start looking towards the season. W-L Crew holds an open winter training/conditioning program. We will be starting Nov. 10th. The location is TBD. Individual squads (girls/boys) will be holding meetings in the next couple weeks to get this information out as well as come together to all get on the same page as we head to the next phase of the school year.

If you are planning to row next season and you or know of someone that is not on our e-mail lists, there is one for the boosters(parents) and team (current rowers/novices) this would be a good time to join. They are yahoogroups listserves which are self adding a self removing. The e-mail lists are the major way we keep in contact.

To subscribe/unsubscribe send a e-mail to these addresses:

Subscribe: - add a short note telling who you are –

boosters w-lcrewboosters-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
team  wlcrewteam-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Unsubscribe: send an e-mail to:

boosters w-lcrewboosters-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com
team wlcrewteam-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com

If you are not going to row with us this spring and you are not on one of the team lists, don't worry I won't be sending messages using the e-mails I have on this message. I will only be sending e-mails to our lists.

Hope this message finds everyone well. Please feel free to contact me with any questions/concerns you might have.

Derek

Dear W-L Crew Athletes, Parents, and Friends,

Wreaths Yes

A reminder from holiday fundraiser chair Myra Probasco ...

"Now is a great time to get out and sell holiday plants and wreaths.  You have the next three weekends to go door-to-door within you neighborhood -- but don't delay.  Please sell to as many homes as you can.  Make additional copies of the order form as needed, or contact me at basco5860@... for additional materials.  Orders must be turned in by Nov. 10th.  Thanks for your efforts!"

Also, rowers/coxswains are needed to help sell mail order wreaths at the Lyon Park Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 8, from 6PM to 9:30PM.  You will receive $10/hour in fundraising credit for this activity.  If interested, contact Mrs. Probasco at basco5860@... .

Meeting No

The Crew Booster membership meeting scheduled for November 13 has been cancelled.  Not enough business to justify assembling.  But please mark your calendars for Thursday, January 8, when we will meet at W-L at 7:30 PM to start getting serious about planning for regattas, Mulch Madness 2009, and other spring activities.

Thanks.

The W-L crew coaches would like to invite all of the parents, brothers, and sisters of our Learn To Row student athletes to the Potomac River tomorrow, Saturday, October 18th for a live demonstration of the skills they have learned over the past 3 weeks.

It is always fun and exciting to see how quickly these new rowers pick up the sport. Tomorrow, they will conduct several short, scrimmage style races for your viewing pleasure (and to show off their newly learned skills) along the waterfront in Georgetown. The race course will be along the waterfront park on Water street between the foot of Wisconsin Ave and Key Bridge. There are many great front row seats from which to watch the entire race.

The atheles will meet at Potomac Boat Club at 9:45am and the scrimmage will begin at approximately 11:15am. We hope to see you there.

We can do just about anything as long as everyone is on the same page. Let’s try and get it clear today so you can mention this to all the kids today.

Dear Crew Parents and Other Friends of W-L Crew --

Launch Driver Training

Watching a regatta from a referee boat provides a unique perspective on the sport.  We have an obligation to provide launch drivers for our regattas, and we need parents and other W-L Crew friends to be trained and certified.  The fall training program will be held at the Occoquan on Saturday, November 8th, from 8AM to 4PM.  Please consider volunteering.  The Boosters will pay the $75 registration fee.  For more information, contact Jack Goodman at jackgoodman@... or 703/527-6478.

Emailing Wreath Order Forms

Attached are sales forms for mail ordered wreaths (delivered via UPS or Fed-EX). You could e-mail your friends, family members, etc. and ask them to order a wreath and/or give a donation to help out W-L Crew's fundraising effort this year.

Edit these downloaded sales  forms (they are in Word) before you send them out by adding your name to the order form and sales receipt so you receive rower credit.

Sales via e-mail are one way to extend our fundraising effort.  You still should plan to go door-to-door within your neighborhoods to sell both the wreaths and the rower delivered poinsettias.

If you have any questions, contact Myra Probasco at Basco5860@...

This is for those crew parents who could not attend last night's meeting, from our holiday fundraiser chairs Myra Probasco and Ann Symonds.  (This sale is a great opportunity for students to get started toward their fundraising minimum requirement of $400 for returning rowers and $100 for novices.  Students will be credited with 45% of their sales, plus 100% of any additional donations customers make.)  JG

------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Washington-Lee Crew Parent:

The 2008 Holiday Poinsettia and Wreath sale has been launched, and your child has a packet full of instructions and order forms! This is a major fund-raiser for W-L Crew.  Its success depends on all rowers and parents participating.  In addition, credits from these sales will count toward your rower’s fundraising requirements for this year. If you or your rower did not pick up a sales packet at the Oct. 7 crew meeting, then e-mail Myra Probasco at Basco5860@... to receive one.  There should also be extra sales packets in Ms. Harrick’s room #2213 at W-L for your rower to pick one up.

Please take a few minutes to go over his/her holiday plant sales packet and discuss this fundraiser with your rower.  As is stated on the packet’s instructions sheet, your rower should go door to door within his/her neighborhood to sell the holiday plants and wreaths and collect any donations to W-L Crew.   It is always a good idea for rowers to sell in pairs or with a parent and to wear W-L crew gear.  Also, try selling to local business and to teachers at W-L.

All order forms are due Monday, Nov. 10th  to Sarah Harrick’s classroom, room 2213.  Orders for poinsettias must be picked up at W-L’s Little Theater the evening of  Dec 5th. Please let us know if you can help us distribute the orders that night.  We need at least 2 parent helpers throughout those times.  Wreaths that are to be delivered by your rower will be coming via a shipping company and delivered to a home in Lyon Village.  Delivery is expected the week of December 1st.  An e-mail will be sent out with instructions on picking up your order.

Unlike mulch, poinsettias are fragile and must be delivered with care.   Plants and local wreaths that your rower sells will be his/her responsibility for delivery.  This means that, unless your child drives, you will need to help them pick up the plants from W-L and help to deliver orders to their customers.  Also, if you have a car with a lot of cargo space or drive a pick-up truck, please let us know if you can be called upon to help others with their deliveries.

New this year – the company we are now buying wreaths from offers UPS or Fed-Ex delivery to anywhere in the U.S.   Customers can now send packaged wreaths as holiday gifts to friends, family, or businesses.  A gift note goes with each wreath. We want to push sales of mail-ordered wreaths to get away from hand-delivery of wreaths.  Your rower should offer mail delivery of the wreath first, then offer rower delivered.

Contact us with any questions.  Thanks for all your support!

> I am writing to let you know about the Men’s Intercollegiate Rowing program at
the Milwaukee School of Engineering. I would like to please ask that you pass
this letter on to the parents and athletes in your high school program, or to
any high school athletes you know that may be looking to join an up and coming
collegiate program.
>
> At MSOE we are one of only two fully funded programs in the Midwestern United
States. In 2007-08, the first year of our program, we put a record two boats
into the grand finals of the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta, finishing 2nd in the
novice lightweight 8, and 4th in the novice heavyweight eight. No men’s team in
its inaugural year had placed even a single boat in the finals in over 20 years!
In addition, we defeated every Big 10 school except Wisconsin. We have a new
210,000 sq ft athletic center, a fleet of new equipment, and a schedule that
includes spring break training down south.
>
> Why MSOE? Not only are we building a nationally recognized rowing program,
but the baccalaureate degree received in majors such as business,
communications, construction management, computer science, nursing, or our #9
ranked engineering programs, will make any athlete a top job prospect upon
graduating. As a Division III school we do not offer scholarships, however our
tuition is academically based on a combination of grades and test scores. If
you are a good student you will pay less than half the going rate for tuition in
many majors. We offer a 4-year degree program that is almost unheard of in
today’s universities, and summer internships are found for students by our
placement office which all but guarantee a job upon graduating. In fact 98% of
MSOE graduates have jobs lined up prior to leaving school. Finally, the average
graduate from our school makes a starting salary of over $51,000.
>
> If you or someone you know might want further information concerning our
program, then please direct them to fill out our athletic questionnaire.
Applications can be found online for free at MSOE.edu. Please do not hesitate
to call or email me if with specific questions.

After spending the last three years in Princeton, NJ, winning two World Championshop Gold Medals and a spot on the 2008 Olympic Team, BRETT SICKLER, is again training at Potomac Boat Club with the Women's Elite Scullers.  Brett very much enjoys the group and the DC area and is quite interested in continuing her career here in Sports Management and/or Marketing.

While in Princeton, Brett worked part-time for Johnson & Johnson in their Olympic Marketing Department, where she garnered many valuable experiences.  Now she would like to work for a professional team or perhaps in sports merchandising.

Brett plans on going to business school in the next few years to get a dual degree in business and sports marketing, but believes that working right now would be the best thing for her.

If you or anyone you know works in the field or a related one, please give Brett Sickler your highest consideration.  It would be difficult to locate a better candidate or addition to any company.

Thanks,

The Elite Scullers and Coaches

        All,

We had a large number of people interested in W-L crew attend the swim test today. The Learn to Row starts tomorrow. I could use your help by letting anyone you all might know who is going to participate. We are asking everyone who is participating to come to the Qincy St. entrance to the OLD school by 3:15pm. We will be taking the Metro down and getting a school bus back. Please pass the word. If you know someone who hasn't taken the swim test you need to let me know. They will not be allowed on the water until they have passed this test. Everyone also needs a USRowing waiver which can be found(a link) on our team website http://w-lcrew.org.

        Hello everyone,

I hope this message finds you all doing well. We have a meeting for any students intersted in learning to row. The learn to row program is open to everyone. They don't have to row in the spring. Just come down and see what it's all about. Of course we definitely want to get everyone and anyone interested in joining us in the Spring. The fall is the best time to get to know the equipment and to make the spring a safer and smoother season.

So please let everyone you know that the meeting will be at W-L Library starting at 7:30pm.
