What could be easier than addressing a few envelopes and adding a
personal note to a letter (see attachment) asking friends and family to
contribute to W-L crew? Please plan
to attend this year’s Friends and Family Appeal, which is being hosted by
Ginger, Peter and Julie Evans on Sunday, November 5 from 2 to 5 pm at their
home at 5013 Washington Boulevard
(invitation attached).Remember,
all contributions are credited 100% towards the rower’s fund raising
credits.
I think I sent this request a little while ago. My ex-wife Katherine really
needs to find a new home for her two cats because of asthma due to
allergies. They are really great cats. The info on them is below and images
of them both are attached. Figs is more an outdoor cat and Sally tries to be
but is more 50/50 on the outdoors.
If you know of anyone who would be interested in these two please let us
know.

You have got to be kidding, suggesting that kids bring laptops to the boat
house. Claire had her ipod stolen during a crew practice last year, I can only
imagine what would happen with a bunch of laptops laying around. Even if they
aren't stolen, knowing how spaced out kids can be I would bet a number of them
would forget their laptops and send parents scurrying down there after work to
try and find them.
Please ask coaches to remind kids NOT to bring anything of value with them to
practice.

Barbara and everyone,
I did not suggest kids bring laptops. I was simply making everyone aware of
a change at PBC. I was more assuming parents would take advantage it, if and
when they dock sit. I always state to the kids if you don't want it stolen,
missplaced or broken...don't bring it. That goes for taking anything you
own...anywhere.

I have arranged for the swim test to be administered tomorrow(early release)
at 1pm...right after school tomorrow and then Friday 3:00pm...right after
school.
Please spread the word.
Hope to see you all there.
Derek
Hello Everyone,
I was not aware that Thursday is early release. I will be checking with the
pool about the time for Thursday's swim test. I will let everyone know
tomorrow asap.
Derek
All,
Sorry for sending to everyone but before I set this desk out on the curb I
wanted to see if anyone wanted it. The top is one piece and the legs come in
two sections. The black laminate has come off a bit but other then that the
desk is solid. It's just too big for my little apt.
first one, gets it...or the curb will take it.
An image of the desk it attached.
Derek
Hello Everyone,
I've arranged to have a swim test for any novices participating in the learn
to row program. This Saturday we will be getting on the water and anyone
doing so will need to have a swim test first.
We will be holding the swim test this Thursday and Friday right after
school.
Bring your sweats...top and bottom, a towel and a garbage bag for the wet
clothes.
Remember the test is 3 lengths of the pool(any stroke, no time limit),
treading water for 1 minute and then putting a life jacket on in the water.
See you all there.
Derek
All,
I just wanted to let you know that we had a really great turn out for the
Novice Program. W-L had over 10 rowers show up(girls and boys). The total
amount of novices from all 4 programs was over 90.
Saturday was just an orientation in general to the equipment, boat handling
and rowing form using the ergs.
I also wanted to thank the experienced rowers who showed up. We will need a
few more this coming saturday. I will be in touch with everyone about the
details. This time it will involve rowing equipment up from Thompson's to
PBC.
If you know of any potential novice rowers please let them know it's not too
late. If they have any questions they are free to contact me.
There will be a bus again at W-L at 7:30am to take everyone down.
Derek
We’re revving up for the annual W-L Crew Boosters poinsettia and
greens sale. This major fall fundraiser generates nearly half of
our operating budget.
To ensure its success, we’d welcome your help with sales to major Arlington businesses. Do
you have a connection – as an owner, employer, manager or steady
customer? If so, would you be willing to contact that business on the
Boosters’ behalf? We’ll supply you with letters and forms, and also
can provide stationery.
Some key establishments include the National Science Foundation, GeorgeMasonUniversity, the National
Rural Electric Cooperative Association and more. Please let me know of your
willingness – and the names of the respective businesses – by Wednesday, Oct. 18. Otherwise, we’ll handle
mailings or rowers will visit employers personally.

Please join us this Thursday, October 12 at 7:30 pm in W-L's Upper Library
for the fall Crew Boosters and Returning Rowers meeting. This will be an
opportunity for the Boosters to complete registration forms and pay dues for
the 2006-07 season as well as to hear about the budget and fundraising
activities. The rowers will be holding a separate break-out team meeting at
7:30 pm to discuss fall activities.
For new rowers and their families who would like to learn more about W-L

the Booster meeting. Boosters, coaches and crew team members will provide
an introduction to the sport and its requirements. Please encourage anyone
interested in crew to attend!

Derek
All,
I just wanted to let you know that I've been working on details for a novice
rowing camp. This year W-L, Yorktown, Wakefield and McLean will be holding a
novice rowing camp starting next Saturday the 14th. This camp will be from
8am to noon. We will be running the program through both PBC and Thompson's
but the 1st day will be at PBC for everyone. We will be rowing for 5
Saturdays starting the 14th. Anyone is welcome...even if they aren't going
to row in the spring. Please let me know if you know of anyone interested. I
need to start to come up with an idea of how many kids we will have
participating from W-L. I hope to get out an announcement and flyers at W-L
and HB next week. But don't wait to start spreading the news.

It may not be an option for us due to the location...but I thought I would
still send the information along. TJ has the largest amount of kids with 11
girls and 6 boys so far attending the program. It is no wonder some programs
are a strong as they are.
I'm not saying everyone should row over the fall...but if your not
getting/staying in shape over the fall...you are leaving the door open for
other teams to come up from behind and be ahead of you come spring time. If
you can, doing an organized sport over the fall is one of the best ways to
stay in shape, have fun and stay prepared for the up coming season.

Hello everyone,
Margot Shumway coached for W-L a year ago many of you may remember her. She
coached our women's novice eight to a 3rd place at VA States. She is looking
to return to our coaching staff this spring. Currently she has returned to
this area from Princeton, NJ and is looking for a job to support herself as
she continues to train. She needs to find a job that is as flexible as
possible to allow her to train and coach for W-L all the while pursue the
National Team and the Olympics.
If anyone might have a lead on a situation/job that would help her out
please let me know and I will forward that information to her. Any leads
would help so if you don't have a direct lead knowing someone else to
contact would help.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. She is in need of
something asap.
Derek
All,
Sorry I got the dates wrong.
Thompsons started Tuesday, Sept. 4th
ODBC started August 28th.
I've heard that the ODBC girls could still use a few members. You can
contact Becky Zapata or her mother for help with looking into it.
Derek
All,
I've been contacted by a few of you asking for more information on Fall
Rowing. ODBC has already started but I believe there may still be time for
you to look into it. There is a tryout process and then cuts...if needed.
The website for information is http://tcwcrew.org/odbc/odbc.html
Thompson's Boat Center also has a competitive and developemental level
programs. Thompson's this past summer won both the Men's Jr. Eight and Men's
Jr. 4(Scott Herring '06 was on both boats) at USRowing Championships. The
website for information is http://www.thompsonboatcenter.com/compprog.htm
Both programs have Women's and Men's Programs.
ODBC started Sept. 28th
Thompson's started Aug. 4th
please let me know if you have any quesitons.
Derek
Hello All,
The note below is from one of the coaches of the Thompson's Fall Program.
I've provided links to the website for Thompson's and ODBC which should give
you more information about the programs available to you over the fall.
