Greetings!

Moments ago, Congressman John Mica (R-FL) announced the introduction of the American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act. The proposed bill eliminates dedicated funding for bicycling and walking as we feared, and it goes much further and systematically removes bicycling from the Federal transportation program. It basically eliminates our status and standing in the planning and design of our transportation system -- a massive step backwards for individuals, communities and our nation. It's a step back to a 1950s highway- and auto-only program that makes no sense in the 21st century.

The bill reverses 20 years of progress by:

  • destroying Transportation Enhancements by making it optional;
  • repealing the Safe Routes to School program, reversing years of progress in creating safe ways for kids to walk and ride bicycles to school;
  • allowing states to build bridges without safe access for pedestrians and bicycles;
  • eliminating bicycle and pedestrian coordinators in state DOTs; and
  • eliminating language that insures that rumble strips "do not adversely affect the safety or mobility of bicyclists, pedestrians or the disabled."

On Thursday, the House Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) Committee will mark-up the bill and Representatives Petri (R-WI) and Johnson (R-IL) will sponsor an amendment that restores dedicated funding for Transportation Enhancements and Safe Routes to School. Representatives Petri and Johnson can only be successful if everyone with a stake in safe sidewalks, crosswalks, and bikeways contacts their representative today.

Because of these urgent new developments, and the vital importance of a HUGE turnout on Capitol Hill in March, the National Bike Summit early bird registration deadline has been extended to Feb 20. We need every single cyclist in Washington, D.C. that the city can hold (and that's thousands ...). Register today!

Sincerely,

You have probably heard that the Petri/Johnson/Lipinski amendment to restore dedicated funding for bicycling and walking lost narrowly by just two votes in this morning’s Transportation Committee meeting in the House of Representatives. The bi-partisan amendment and vote took place against the backdrop of a very partisan and rancorous mark-up of the legislation – the two Republican sponsors of the bike/walk amendment, Reps. Petri and Johnson, deserve a huge “thank you” for taking on this challenge on behalf of the cycling and walking community.

You also deserve a huge “thank you”. The League’s on-line advocacy center reported yours was one of more than 18,000 e-mails sent to Members of Congress on this issue – a stunning number, and surely part of the reason we were able to put up such a good fight today. We are meeting this evening with our colleagues in the America Bikes coalition to determine our next steps, greatly heartened by your incredible support. If nothing else, today’s vote has shown the leadership of the House and committee chairman Mica that we are a force with which to be reckoned.

Notwithstanding other developments, we expect the transportation bill will be debated on the floor of the House of Representatives very soon: February 13th. As soon as we have decided our strategy for this next critical phase, we’ll be in touch again. Meanwhile, you can check the League’s website, or America Bikes for more information; and please follow us on Twitter and Facebook for real-time updates.

The J&P Scottsdale to Tucson Bike Tour is coming up next weekend and I am looking for a roommate to share costs with. If you may be interested please let me know by email or phone. The tour lasts for four days and is a lot of fun! You can read more about it here: J&P Tour 2012  You can sign up for the tour here: 2012 Sign Up Form  (no co$t to sign up :-)

Sorry for the last minute situation, but family plans changed due to illness and now I will be able to attend. The weather looks like it will be in the lo-mid 70's, 5-7 mph SSW winds and no rain!

There is no cost for the tour except the sag vehicle's gas that is shared by all. You're on your own for accommodations and meals. The tour is sponsored by the Az Bike Club which you may join if you like: Membership in ABC is about $25/year and I encourage all of you to join.  You can pay online or send in your application with a check.  To learn more, click on http://www.azbikeclub.com/join.htm This provides insurance to cover the tour for members.

Thanks

Hello Dave,
I am on the group that is responsible for coming up with the recreation ammenities/components that people will want at our new wetlands park that is currently under construction.

I am contacting you to get feedback from the cycling community.  Could you please take a look at the following questions and send me back responses?
In case you are unfamiliar with the project, it is at the Waste Water Treatment plant off of 89A.  It will have dirt trails circling around the ponds.  It will serve as a wetlands/wildlife park as well as assist the Waste Water plant with their processes.

I appreciate your feedback.  Feel free to add on anything you think would be important to cyclists.

1.       When do you feel you would be interested in utilizing the park?  (Hours, seasons?)

2.      What would be your goal when visiting the park?  (Exercise, recreation, being outdoors, education, animal watching, taking a tour?)

3.      What minimal amenities would you expect to be provided at this park? (Drinking fountain, shade, picnic tables, benches, interpretive signage, restrooms…?)

4.      How often do you think your group/organization would use the park within a year?

5.      How would you like to see this park marketed to the community or visitors?

1.       When do you feel you would be interested in utilizing the park?  (Hours, seasons?)  Park should be open year round and hours should vary with season, opening at sunup and sunset year round.

2.      What would be your goal when visiting the park?  (Exercise, recreation, being outdoors, education, animal watching, taking a tour?) I would say all of the items listed but primary should be EXERCISE & RECREATION.  It would be great to have a level 1 mountain bike path around the entire facility, so families could enjoy rides together.

3.      What minimal amenities would you expect to be provided at this park? (Drinking fountain, shade, picnic tables, benches, interpretive signage, restrooms…?) I would say all of the above, but for sure drinking water restrooms.

4.      How often do you think your group/organization would use the park within a year?  I can see us holding board meetings there when the weather is nice.  I can also see us stopping there on rides between Sedona &  Cottonwood.  We might use it for our annual picnic some times.

5.      How would you like to see this park marketed to the community or visitors?  As a great place to bring the entire family to walk, run, bike have picnics and just enjoy the great out doors.

Hi All,

Well the first clean-up day went very well.  We had 14 individuals show up on this very cool Saturday morning and by 1000 hrs. they had gathered 15 bags of trash and assorted objects.

A big thanks to those who turned out; Dennis Renner, Bob Formhals, Neil King, Dave Singer, Andrew Bailey, Scott & Dorothy Love, Bob Hudson, Al Abbott, Rick Riedel, Bob Richards, Sue Arnold and John Ward.  Plus a special thanks to Carla Riedel for the wonderful cookies.

Now, one additional big shout out to Bob Hudson.  Bob has agreed to become the Adopt-a-Highway Coordinator for the VVCC.  In the future he will be scheduling the clean-up days, so watch for his e-mails, and lend a hand.

Thanks again to everyone who made our first clean-up a great success.

Hello Dave,
I am on the group that is responsible for coming up with the recreation ammenities/components that people will want at our new wetlands park that is currently under construction.

All,

I’m back, though a bit slow due to the back-back knee surgeries. I’m looking for suggestions from the audience on where we should ride this Sunday. Bob F has been working on trails, and might have a good suggestion for recently revamped areas. I’ll post his suggestions on Thursday.

Best,

Mike H.

Exciting News from the League
Dear League Member

We have exciting news to share with you. We have taken the initial steps to unify three national bicycling organizations - the League, the Alliance for Biking & Walking and Bikes Belong - to create a powerful, dynamic new voice for cyclists at the local, state and national level.
This is a big step in the evolution of the League and our movement, and we don't take it lightly. Nor do we intend to move forward with such a bold and visionary plan without engaging the very lifeblood of the organization - our members and affiliates - in the process.

Our goal in taking such a bold step is to serve you better, increase the effectiveness of our core programs, and cement the good relationships we have with our partners in the bicycling movement. We will build a strong membership-based organization and focus our combined resources to strengthen the bicycling movement and transform communities to create a more bicycle-friendly America.

Nothing is going to change overnight.

*    The lifelong commitment to the League and to the mission of the organization of our Life Members will be honored
*    All current membership in the League will be similarly honored.
*    Nothing changes related to the valuable insurance program we offer our clubs and affiliates

We may make changes in membership categories or structure as we seek to combine the hundreds of thousands of cyclists who belong to local clubs, advocacy groups and affiliated organizations into one powerful national voice. We will keep you informed throughout this process, and welcome your input.

We will continue to promote and protect the rights of cyclists, deliver a nationally recognized cyclists education program, continue the successful Bicycle Friendly America programs, celebrate National Bike Month and organize the National Bike Summit.

We don't have all the answers yet as to how this will unfold. Board and staff are committed to an open and transparent process to move this forward, and the board still has to approve any further steps towards unification with the Alliance and Bikes Belong. You can e-mail me andy@... and/or my colleague Elizabeth Kiker elizabeth@... with comments, questions, and reactions.

In the words of the League's board chairman, Hans van Naerssen, "There is a lot of work ahead. We must determine how to combine the diverse strengths of a powerful alliance of state and local organizations, a storied national user group, and a vibrant industry association in a way that preserves their unique attributes and realizes the game-changing potential of a single entity."

That is the challenge, and the opportunity, that lies before us. We look forward to working with you, and serving you, as we increase cycling - and cyclists safety - in the United States.

Yours sincerely

Andy Clarke

All,

Let’s ,meet at Bell Rock Plaza parking lot at 10am. Those who wish to grab a demo bike across the street at Absolute Bikes will have time to do so. Then, we can do MITS, Easy-Breezy, and perhaps a few trails like Llama, etc on the other side, in order to get a good idea of how the new bikes perform.

Please let me know if you’ll attend.

Good morning All and Happy Friday!

Attached is the latest update of the Singletrack Celebration, which is just a month away!  Lots of things are in place; most of the top priority items, but lots of things still to attempt, mostly talking to local businesses for support, discounts, donations, raffle items, etc.  Please forward this update on to anyone you can think of that is not on these lists.  PLEASE send out the website / blog link to your mailing lists as it is time to be sure everyone knows this is happening.  Thanks for all your help & support and please feel free to contact me, or any others mentioned, with any questions or comments.  Lots of local participation & support will make this the best event that it can be, and set us up for more of these in the future!  See you out on the trails.  Peace on dirt.
