The 6th (I think) Hangover Hat will be January 1 at Tempe Sports Complex on the north fields off of Carver. Registration is from 11:15 - 11:45 am. Games will be over by 6.
Cost is a measly five bucks, cheaper than the bar drinks the night before.
You can pre-register by filling out this form. You'll still need to pay when you arrive, but this will give me a better idea of numbers.
Last week saw some rainy, soft-field Ultimate and a whole lotta good times... for 11 players! I am sure this was solely due to our delicate Phoenix weather sensitivities. This Sunday, however, with a crisp high of 72 and nary a raindrop on the Doppler, I am sure the VOTS community will come storming back. It's silly intense winter Ultimate - be there! I am sure I don't need to remind you that not playing Ultimate for a month and then playing a New Year's Day hat tourney has a 57% chance of breaking one to two kidneys. You do not want to try to get on the kidney transplant list on a holiday, so come stay in shape this Sunday.
Also, there's a new player named Megan who lives near Goodyear and could use a ride. If you're willing/able, drop me a line and I'll put y'all in touch.
Just a reminder about Sunday's women's throwing and catching clinic. 9am-noon at Tempe Sports Complex, field #6 which is in the middle on the North side (so park in the lot off of Carver). We will have two groups cycle through the two stations, and then scrimmage.
Hope to see you on Sunday!!

With a little rain this week, those knee scraping Rhodes fields are going to be fluffy like whispy clouds and begging for your open play. Numbers were down a bit last week thanks to AZUFA and Hoasis (coughcoughBigNIPScoughcough), so get yer butt in gear this week and head over to Mesa Sunday afternoon - the New Year's Day hat tourney and NYF are around the corner, and you do NOT want to show up to that out of shape.
Anyone have any after-party location suggestions for New Year Fest? The venue would have to accommodate 250 people, preferably allow all-ages, and preferably be in the North Scottsdale or North Phoenix area. (Also acceptable would be South Scottsdale.)
We've investigated a several locations, but are always seeking additional input. Please reply to Theodore_Bland_3rd@... .
PHX-ation will be hosting a women's throwing and catching clinic this Sunday, December 13th from 9am-noon at Tempe Sports Complex field #6. We will split up into groups to work on throwing and catching, and then have a game to 15 to practice the skills learned. We will have guys out to help for one-on-one attention, and a video camera so you can see what you look like when you throw.
This FREE clinic is open to all women of all levels!
Please let me know if you plan on attending.
See you then!!

Plenty of guys are willing to play, but the pickup team can use more
women. The male players will cover the bid fee themselves i.e. WOMEN
PLAY FOR FREE. If you are interested in being on the pickup team then
email me ASAP. You don't have to commit to playing the entire
weekend. I'm sure the male players will be happy with whatever
playing time you can provide.

Now that you've pounded some turkey, time to run off some pounds, you turkeys.
Sunday pickup in ON at Rhodes, 3:30. We had a sparse crowd two weeks ago, but now that Fall League is over, it's time to get your off-season routine going. It is an established scientific fact that Sunday pickup players go three rounds higher in the Spring League Draft*, so if you want some VOTSian glory, get yer tryptophanian arse out to pickup!
< nate, who may or may not be able to make it, so someone please bring some cones.
* - This might have a relationship to Bill picking Sunday players three rounds too early; science is entirely mute on that point.
If you are interested making the trip to Tucson for Hoasis but do not yet have a team, DO NOT FRET!
Ted Glenn, tlglenn@..., will be coordinating the team. Please email him by this Saturday (Nov. 25th) if you would like to pickup. He has asked for a self-assessment of your skill level (to help balance teams in case there are enough people for two teams).

Well, as you may have just heard, May Cause Dizziness won the whole kit n' kaboodle this weekend in the 2009 Fall League. Congrats to them and their captains, Justin Dhein and Emily Hayden.
I'd like to thank everybody that helped out. There are always so many folks that walk by and offer to help out, in addition to a couple of poor saps that were in the wrong place at the wrong time, that I can't call you all out by name.
However, I think it's important for folks to understand that a lot of things have to be done, none of which are very complicated, but with a lot of people pitching in just a few minutes of their time, great things, like league, can happen.
I would like to throw out a few special kudos to the folks that put the icing on the cake. Because to be honest with you, anyone can make cake.
Thanks to Katherine Nabity, as nothing really gets done without her.
Thanks to Josh, Abdoo, Stoli and Megan for buying and carting the subs, kegs, chips, and cookies. Without you guys, I would have just ordered Big Macs, quite possibly one of the best foods on the day of a tournament (just talking about it makes me crave one right now.)
Thanks to Rebecca Lynn Sue and Laura Smolinski for buying and cutting up the avocados.
Thanks to all that brought coolers and ice. Without you guys, well, food and drinks get warm and there's that bacteria thing that makes the news every so often. Eeewwww!!
Thanks to folks that helped me set up, clean up and move stuff. Without you guys, there's be subs and beer in someone's truck without ice ... bacteria.
Thanks to the folks that helped set up fields.
And, finally, thanks to the captains that really do put effort into making league such an awesome experience that you'll want to continue playing for many years to come.
I would encourage each of you to keep up with what's going on in the VOTS community. Tournaments in the SW are coming up (including NYF on Jan 30-31 in Scottsdale), teams are forming, men's league starts TOMORROW!! open play is kicking and well, Spring League 2010 is just around the corner.
Registration fees make great stocking stuffers!!! Buy yours TODAY!!!

Fellow VOTSers,
The 4th annual Phoenix Idiotarod will be this coming Feb 23rd in downtown Phoenix. Last year VOTS folks were represented by 3 teams! Start assembling your 5 person sled squads! You will not be disappointed! (Ps. I bet this event will be disallowed in the future by the police, so this may be your last chance to run through the streets of DT Phx, dressed as an idiot while pulling a friend in a shopping cart!)

If you like this kind of crazyness, stay in the loop on the Azcacophy website: http://www.azcacophony.org

League players,
Some beer will be provided at the playoffs party on Sat.
All players are expected to behave in a responsible manner.
According to VOTS policy, underage consumption of alcohol will not be tolerated.
DUI is not acceptable. Please plan accordingly and consume in moderation or
carpool with a designated driver.

Last night I left my waterbottle in the middle of the two league fields while I was chit chatting on the other side of the fields. When I came back, it was no longer there, so I'm hoping someone picked it up for me! It is a silver aluminum waterbottle, with a carabiner on the top, and it says "USG Health & Wellness" on it. I'd really like it for this weekend because I'm going to California for a tournament. Let me know. Thanks so much!
And GOOD LUCK to everybody on Saturday ! (but mostly Huck My Life)
The winter league registration has been extended and is still open. It
will close whenever I decide. If you want to register, do so now. When
I close it, I close it.

Tucson's annual fall 4/3 co-ed ultimate tournament is happening. Dec 5-6 in Tucson at Himmel Park. Due to reduced field space this year, we only have room for 10 teams, but do not fret, it will still be rocking!
Bids are $250 and will be awarded on a first come, first served basis.
There will be a party Saturday night, format to be determined. Other
perks to be determined in the next few days...
In order to reserve your spot, please email me back as soon as
possible. I will then send you directions about making payment to
confirm your bid.
If you will be in need of floorspace, also please let us know that as
soon as possible so we can make arrangements.
All other questions can be directed to the TD's. Please call or email!
Thanks and looking forward to a sweet Hoasis 2009!

Well, playoffs are officially here. I'd like to congratulate each and every team for making it this far. But, the road is far from over. Not far, time-wise, as games end this week. And, if your team is really good, it might not be far, in a difficulty sense. Also, some teams won't make it out of pool play, in which case, the end is closer than it is for other teams both from a time and difficulty perspective. Although, technically your games will be more difficult and potentially very lop-sided, so the reality is that the road will end shortly, time-wise.
So, CONGRATULATIONS and may the team I like more win!!
Now, logistics for this week. Games are played on your preferred nights. This is something your captains should have already told you. What they may not have told you is that you need to bring a white or a dark, depending on your team's color. Why? Well, because in 3 of the 4 pools, two teams have the exact same color shirt. Also, in the dark, dark blue looks like black, etc.
So, bring a white or dark, preferably the one that is most unlike the shirt color of the team you are on.
Something else your captains might not have mentioned, as this point in time, is that at the games on Saturday at SSC, starting at 10am and noon, there will be food-type products along with some non-alcholic beverages, in limited supply. If you prefer a more adult beverage, I would suggest bringing your own, or making nice with someone who brought extra. If you bring bottles, please bring cups. If you are on hardcore Atkins, I would suggest packing a lunch. Open fires are not allowed at SSC, so no burgers this time. Sorry.
Winners of pool play will advance to Semis at 4pm and possibly Finals at 6pm. Feel free to heckle. It's pretty much why some folks play the whole season. And, someone ask Josh if he's seen the buns.
Time to sign up for men's winter league is coming to a close. Get your
registration in. If you didn't paypal, you can pay me at Tues games
tonight.
Also, I need some of you guys to be captains for this league. Email
reply to me.
Tim
Last chance to volunteer. I don't really need THAT many people. Actually, I'm doing most of the work myself.
So, who wants to volunteer? I mean, seriously. I had one chica volunteer. I could give you the "VOTS works cause of people like you" speil, but instead, I'll be more blunt. There will be NO drinks and NO food without volunteers.
The Valley of the Sun Ultimate Association is pleased to announce that
the 28th annual New Year Ultimate Fest will be held January 30-31, 2010,
and for the first time ever will take place at Scottsdale Sports
Complex. These excellent fields were the site of Southwest Regionals in
2006 and 2009.
