Let me know if you're free around 5 pm today to help me unload stuff from storage. I need 2 or 3 people. Storage is at Mill and 60. It should only take 30 minutes or so.
More setup up help is always better than less setup help. I'll be at TSC at 7 both days. If you can help, please arrive between 7:30-8 am.
Cleanup help is just as important. Games go until 6:45 Saturday, but only half the fields will be in use then.
Sunday clean up. Yeah, I know you have other places to be. My goal is to have
all the other fields cleaned up 3:30. I plan to start breaking down Frisbee Central during Open A finals, so that we're done quickly.
3 kind souls who will help me put stuff back into storage. If everything goes
well, we catch the entire second half of the game.
EMT/tapers for the weekend. If you know anyone, are licensed (EMT) or know how to do a quality job (taping) let me know please let me know. I don't have the coverage I thought I would. The EMT is a paid position.
Hey VOTS,
Sunday pickup is canceled due to NYF and Apocalypse Bowl considerations.
However, you should take advantage of the last chance to get yer
hammer-scoober ya-ya's out before NYF at Thursday evening pickup at
Tempe Sports Complex from 6-8.
see you there,
< nate
Just a reminder that there are open pick-up games happening Tues/Thurs 6-8pm at
TSC field 7, still running, now through the start of league. If you go to
these, please consider throwing $1-2 into the "pitch" collection to help pay for
the lights.
Also, there should be a "welcome to league" open night happening the second week
of Feb. Watch for an upcoming announcement of this and think if it as the
perfect opportunity to bring out your friend(s) that are beginners and give them
a chance to learn to play BEFORE the official start of league.
Well, registration seems to be going fairly well ... I guess. It doesn't really matter until the end, but whatever.
Anyway, men's slots are almost full on Wednesday and Monday will likely fill up, too. For women, well, we always need more. So, encourage your friends to join. I mean, New Year's resolutions and all, how hard could it be?
I'd like to make a push for captains now, since this process usually involves some begging at the last minute. I like that the captains have a say in the t-shirt and disc designs. Since we'll be making these decisions in the next one or two days, I'd like to suggest that anyone on the fence of captain-dom hurry up and volunteer to be a captain so that you can take part in the great shirt and disc design debate of 2009. It won't actually be a debate, it'll be more of a vote ... and a silent vote at that. Regardless, sign up. We need YOU!!!
And, tell your friends that they should just sign up.
If you are an experienced player interesting in picking up on a team for NYF next weekend, please let me know. I have a couple of teams looking to add to their numbers next weekend. Thanks.
Hi everyone....
here's a short plug for the klassik tournament in hawaii....if you have
the chance to get away, you will definitely be rewarded 10x
over....you'll have so much fun that you will not want to leave the
island.....it's darn easy to pick up on a team!!
The 22nd Kaimana Klassik is coming up, over President's Day weekend
(Feb 14-16). If you don't already know about Kaimana, it's universally
acclaimed as one of the top ultimate tournaments in the world. We'll be
welcoming women's and open teams from around the world for three days
of competitive, spirited play and raucous parties. It's all you can
play, eat, drink, and drink. More here:

Now, of course, you're thinking, But Jose, I've already been thinking about league.
Well, not hard enough.
I need registrations, disc designs, shirt designs, someone to swing by Boulder's and see if they really truly want to sponsor us, and more captains!! (see below for details)
Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither will Spring League '09.
There is a running total of folks that have registered and for what nights. Wed nights are almost half full. These numbers tend to increase very rapidly at this point. Don't dawdle.
Disc designs:
I have a couple disc designs. Please let me know if you are currently working on something. If I don't hear from you in the next 1-2 days, a decision will be made based on what I currently have.
Shirt designs:
There's a little more time on these, since the lead time isn't as great. But, if I don't hear that you have something that you are currently working on, then a decision will likely be made sooner rather than later.
Boulder's:
I'm just kidding. I'll assign this to someone if I can't swing by.
Captains:
Come on, who doesn't want to be loved and revered by an entire team of people? Plus, it's guy/girl captains. Who wouldn't want that? Nobody, that's who. Sign up as a captain NOW!!
For those of you not Lei-ing Out this weekend, there will be pickup Sunday! Only a ridiculous 13 days between Sunday and New Year's Fest, so get yourself out there!
If that's not motivation enough, spring league is around the corner, too!!!
And yet another opportunity to mock those northerners who are enduring sub zero temps! Ha, northerners! You are in pain! I smile at your discomfort! If only there were a German word for this!
Great turnout last week! Fun in the sun times! Let's make like Peter Frampton and/or Steely Dan and "Do it again!"
< nate
p.s. I won't be there, so somebody please bring cones.
p.p.s. Do longer emails mean higher attendance? Let's find out.
p.p.p.s. Molly Bloom, are you coming to pickup this Sunday? A simple yes or no answer is unacceptable when a longer, more time-wasting one is available.
p.p.p.p.s.

Sorry for the registration outage, folks. There was some talk of a
schedule change and we wanted to put things on hold while we sorted it
out. In the end, we decided to stick with what we have.
Registration is re-opened. Tell your friends!

Registration for spring league is open!
Online and mail-in registration is available, but the tentative
cut-off date is Feb. 7th for online and Jan. 28th for mail-in **or**
when player caps have been met. It is always better to sign up sooner
rather than later.
Details are available at the website and surely Jose will have a much
more entertaining email coming soon.

If you have any problems with registration, let me know.
Thanks,
Katherine
Just a reminder that there is open coed pick-up ultimate at TSC
tonight. 6-8pm on field 7. (This is the NE one by the dog
park so you can use the northern parking area).
Tomorrow, Sunday, the weather report is for highs in he SEVENTIES here in the Valley!!!
BEAUTIFUL AND SUNNY-CLEAR!!!
Even better, it's supposed to peak at right about FOUR O'CLOCK!!
There just happens to a game of ultimate frisbee scheduled at just that time on just that day!!!
Can you think of anything better to do on a BEAUTIFUL SUNNY day than running around on a grass field with a bunch of fun, cool people?!?! Just playing games and having fun?!?!
I sure can.
Bringing my cell phone and calling all my friends and relatives in the Northeast, Mid-West and Pacific Northwest just to GLOAT as I do it!!! In shorts and T-shirt!! They've got like 4 months before they can do this stuff. At which point, we'll be sequestered to only air-conditioned spaces.
If you don't come out to play Sunday, you really should reconsider exactly what you were put on this planet to do.
(Sorry Nate, but your email was just too passive, negative and... well... kinda desperate. At least this wasn't passive.)
To: votsplayers@yahoogroups.com From: natewj@... Date: Fri, 9 Jan 2009 14:54:53 -0700 Subject: [vots] Rhodes Pickup Sunday Jan. 11 @ 3:15
My last three Phoenix Ultimate experiences have involved 7, 9, and 4 people. As much as I love make-it take-it mini, can I please see ya at pickup?
Another friendly reminder that there are only 20 shaping days until New Year's Fest!
Much better than regular frisbee, nate
Windows Live™: Keep your life in sync. Check it out.
Well, the New Year is here and Ultimate is ramping up. We'll have a new president in a few days, and I'm down about 50% on my 401(k) from last year. It is an exciting time to be alive, no?
With all that going on, can you believe that league is almost here? Me, neither.
League info will be posted once it's official, but so far, here's what I know.
16 co-ed teams (5 men, 2 women)
Game days are: Mon and Wed
Game times are: 6pm and 8pm
All games will be at Diablo in Tempe
League starts Mon, Feb 16.
League ends TBD
Playoff/Finals TBD
Game locations are based on field availability.
In addition to the new league, comes the need for new captains, new shirts, and new discs!! That's right, we'll be handing out discs this league with registration. So, get those designs in for shirts and discs. And, then tell your friends to volunteer for captain.
What? Captain? That sounds tough, you say? Well, it isn't. It really requires less effort than you think. You get to draft your own team, pick your own team's shirt color, and be called "genius" when you make it to finals. I mean, honestly, I haven't seen a payoff to effort ratio this high since Ed McMahon swung by and changed my life.
So, start those designs and volunteer to be captain. It will change your life.
Pick-up ultimate game is ON at TSC tonight. VOTS has field 7 reserved
for use tonight from 6-8pm.(I believe this is the NE one by the dog
park so you can use the northern parking area)
I am not sure if there will be cones there before 6:45, but if not,
just take the field and use it.
Due to cancellation of Sprawl practice tonight, pick-up COULD continue
past 8pm tonight.
Next week, 6pm Tues/Thurs pick-up at TSC will be on, but I could still
use a Thurs volunteer to make sure that cones, etc are handled. Please
let me know if you can help out.
Tim
To clarify my earlier message which was rather ambiguous about the
status of pick-up at TSC tonight...
VOTS has field 7 (I believe this is the NE one by the dog park)
reserved for use tonight from 6-8pm, but I do not yet have anyone with
cones confirmed to be there, nor do I know whether many players will
show up since the status was not made clear earlier. The field is
available for any VOTS players who show up tonight.
Hi,
VOTS has fields reserved for open pick-up play on Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 6pm - 8pm, starting today through Feb 12 at Tempe Sports
Complex (TSC).
We need one or more volunteers to head this up. Responsibilities
include making sure a disc bag with cones (provided by VOTS) is at the
field, overseeing cone setup/removal, and collecting pitch money which
is used to cover the field fees.
This is an easy thing to do if you are planning to play during these
sessions. Please note that we can have multiple people split these
sessions, so while it would be great to have one person do it all, this
task can easily be split by weeknight or month, etc.
Remember that VOTS runs on volunteers. Please respond to me if you can
help with this.
Thanks,
Tim
Hi all, I've been a lax about specifying the volunteer jobs for New Year Fest. Please let me know what you're interested in doing. Still plenty of time to get everything taken care of, but don't dawdle like I did in sending this out to volunteer because there's not that much time. Thanks.
Just a reminder that about the Hangover Hat on Thursday at Benedict Park. Registration is $5 and will be from 11am-11:30am. Expect 3 or 4 games--we have the fields until 6 pm.
Here's your last chance for open disc play for the ENTIRE year of 2008.
Don't miss out:
Weds, 12/31, starting at 11:40am, at Freescale Semiconductor. Located
at NW corner of 101 & Elliot. Go west from 101 on Elliot to the 1st
light, turn north into Freescale. Look for the softball diamond
ahead/to the right. As this is a private business, please no dogs or
alcohol.
See you there!
- Dave
Tempe has closed all fields tonight, so there will be no women's practice or
competitive men's scrimmage.
Open play on Sundays will continue through the holidays, and there is a hat
tournament New Year's Day at Benedict Park in Tempe, with registation starting
at 11 am.
--Keith
The VOTS Board held its elections this week. Congratulations to Tim Streit (the
new VOTS President) and Jeff "Jose" Miller, who was elected to the Board.
Also, thank you to Karen Broome, a founding member of the VOTS board who is
stepping down after more years than she'd like me to mention.
--Keith
Just a reminder, Sprawl is hosting men's competitive open play again this
Thursday at Diablo from 8:00 - 10:00 pm. If you're looking for a more
competitive environment, come on out. We'll be a little more structured this
week, focusing on some basic fundamentals during the scrimmages.
