Players,

The good news is we are back to Tuesday and Thursday nights at Diablo. There is no bad news. The general schedule for the month of September will be as follows:

6-8 pm: (A) Open play and (B) women's practice
8-10 pm: (A) Ironwood/competitive men's practice and (B) competitive co-ed

One or two weeks might have minor changes, and those changes will be announced. As always, don't be afraid to check the hotline: 602-230-4139.

Don't forget Sunday open play at Mesa Community College, and league--registration has started.

Just to clarify, the (A) (B) thing refers to which field a practice is on (9A or 9B), not which day.

Players,

Another reminder that we are back at Diablo. Since there is no Ironwood
practice tomorrow, there will be one field for open play from 6-10, a
women's practice from 6-8, and a competitive coed practice from 8-10.

Votsland...

I'm disappointed to say that I've had a pretty poor response to my last
request for Regionals volunteers. I've only heard from the small list of
"regular" volunteers (Keith, Darrel, Vicky, JT).

Please take another look at the list
http://www.vots.org/Reg2003/Reg-Volunteers.shtml

If you can help out in any way, let me know.

Thanks,
Jill

p.s., I need immediate help with the party. If you're up for this, please
get back to me ASAP.

Subject: Observers needed for Regionals
klhatch
Send Email Send Email

I'm seeking folks who are interested in being Observers for games at
Regionals. The Observer system (there are actually more than one, but only
one of concern for Regionals) was developed... well, let's face it, it was
developed because even though ultimate generally operates beautifully using
the traditional Spirit of the Game approach of self-officiating, there are
times in hotly contested games when a third party arbiter is superior to a
long argument (or worse).

Frankly, it's not an easy job.  Well, the physical task is not demanding;
moving up and down the sideline while watching a probably highly
entertaining game of ultimate. The hard part is being prepared and being
mentally and emotionally poised when a tense situation is turned over to you
for a decision.

The preparation part is fairly simple. You must study the rules and know
them as well as is reasonable. The UPA has a nice manual in addition to the
rules to help observers be prepared. The part about being poised is a
little tougher. Bear in mind that the worst case scenario will have players
(some of whom may be of the highest caliber in the world) seeking your
decision on a play or situation that they don't agree upon. Well, there is
worse, observers carry yellow and red cards that can be used to address
player behavior problems.

It seems to me that most of the likely best candidates for observing will
also likely be playing at Regionals. That is to be expected. However, the
most likely games that will need observers will be the last games of the day
on Sunday, and realistically there should be a fair number of people who
could be observers who would not be playing by then.

So please consider volunteering for this task. A good focused studying of
the rules will make you a more complete player, plus you'll have that aura
of being someone who actually knows the rules. If you turn out to be a
particularly good observer, you could parlay that into observing at
Nationals, which is pretty cool.

Please reply to me at hatch@....

Hey Disc-landers,

Yes, it's true... we've rejoined the 21st century, and (thanks to JT) Fall
League registration can be achieved on-line.

We're no longer using PayPal... there's a new procedure. Click
on this link:

https://www.onlyultimate.com/ind/signup_step1.cfm?ClientID=89&EventID=290

Then register using the simple procedure described there. A credit card
is required. (There's also a link to this from the League page on the
vots.org website.)

If you have troubles with on-line registration, please let me know.

In other news...

I've been recruiting captains for fall league, but I don't have enough yet.
Please consider it, and contact me if you are willing to do this. Look at
the bright side: it's a chance to draft the players who you always wanted
to be on your team. (What you always wanted to do with them, we don't
want to know... just don't force them into it, ok?) Note that I need a captain
from each team at the draft, which will be Mon eve, Sept 29.

If you told me that you would captain a team but have not sent me an
email (so I have your email address), please do so.

Have I mentioned lately that we need you to REGISTER EARLY! You
can save $7 by registering before 9/21. And you can save us from
last-minute fretting by registering before 9/21. Do you really want to
see me standing around, pulling my last 14 hairs out at the last
minute? You do?!?!? You people are cruel.

And have I mentioned our recruitment incentives? If you recruit a
new-to-Ultimate woman to play in Fall League, and both of you
register by 9/21, you qualify for a $6 rebate on your entry fee!
Each of you must list each other as the referred/referring player
on your entry form. Think what you can do with $6... that's probably
enough to buy a couple of your school textbooks at ASU or wherever.
(What's that? $6 isn't enough for that? Oh sorry, I guess things have
changed in the many years since I graduated from college...)

Or, if you recruit a new-to-Ultimate male player to play in Fall
League, there's a $3 rebate. And think what you can do with
$3... (How much are comic books these days - still 12 cents
like when I was a kid?? You could get a couple dozen.)

No, that's not fair, that there's more of a rebate for newbie women.
Life ain't fair, what are we, 6 years old? (NOT FA-A-A-A-AAIR!!!)

Rebates cannot exceed the amount you paid to join league. And
I can't believe the number of you who have asked about that,
fully expecting to be "rebated" more than you paid. What
a bunch of conniving money-grubbers some of you are...

If someone would forward this to the ASU disc players' email list
(I assume there is such a thing...), and the Huckwallas email
list, I would appreciate it.

I see that there's a message on the vots.org Message Board about
someone wanting to play league, but needing a ride from Warner/
Kyrene. If you can help him, please respond to this message. Maybe
he'll let you burn him for a score in league, as payment...

Thanks,

- Dave

Also, Diablo is closed next week (9/16 and 9/18) for irrigation.

Thanks to those who contacted me about observing at Regionals, and for
those who thought about it and didn't pull the trigger, there is still
plenty of time to get involved.

The UPA's guidelines for observers are here,
http://www.upa.org/observers/index.shtml.

The system that is most likely to be used in the UPA Fall Series is the
Four Observer System, so that's the system on which to focus. The Two
Observer System *could* be used if the captains and Regional Coordinator
feel that there are two observers available who are up to the task, but
I will say that at Nationals last year, the Four Observer System was the
only system that I saw being used.

I'll be contacting the people who've indicated to me that they are
willing to observe in the near future. I'll also try to arrange a
couple of opportunities for practicing observing. So read the rules and
guidelines and get ready.

Hey VOTS-Landers,

Which will it be? If you're planning on joining the upcoming
Fall Ultimate League, you have 6 days left to join or else the
cost of flinging (discs, that is) goes up by $7.

That's right... register on-line, by mail or via direct submission
(to JT or me) by 9/21, and it'll only cost you $18. After 9/21,
the price goes up to $25. (Our pricing structure was inspired
by the gasoline industry.)

Some of you may be thinking that, being the philanthropic
type, you WANT to pay more to give VOTS the extra dollars.
But how do you know I'm not just taking the extra $7 and
claiming you signed up before 9/21? You don't know, do you?
So the only way you can know that I'm not profiting by
your procrastination is to quit procrastinating and sign up NOW.

Get to it. See http://www.vots.org for more info.

Hey Procrastinators,

This weekend is the deadline for signing up for VOTS Fall
Ultimate League at the reduced cost of $18. Get your entry
in NOW. The price goes up to $25 next week. (Basic math
in case you've forgotten: $18 is less than $25. You
want to pay LESS money, not more.)

Some answers to questions you may have (questions
not provided, just the answers):

- If you're mailing it, get it in the mail by Saturday 9/20
to qualify for the $18 reduced fee. Don't mail any registrations
after Saturday.
- If you want to sign up in person, I plan on being at
MCC Sunday for open play. Bring a check or exact-change cash,
I'll have forms.
- If you're signing up on line, see http://www.vots.org
for more info
- YES, team captains must still register and pay.
- NO, there's no way to reform me from my nagging
ways. It's my only real qualification for this job.
- If you've referred a newbie to league and want a
rebate, both the newbie and the referring player must
sign up by this early registration deadline.

On another topic, we have field 9 at Diablo reserved
from 6-8pm on 9/25 (that's this coming Thurs) for:
1) beginner's instructional session; 2) league
warm-up open play night; and 3) a last chance to sign up for
league. (Of course, if you wait until 9/25 to sign up, it'll cost you
$25.) We invite all league players to show up and
play. We'll have two fields set up - one for the beginner's
instructional session, one for open play.

Hi VOTslanders,
I am coordinating floorspace for the southwest regionals tournament in Phoenix,
October 11,12. By offering floorspace a person, couple, few, or a whole team
(you decide) will gratefully sleep in your house. An extra bed is dreamy, but
most floorspacers are happy with a piece of floor. Offering and using
floorspace is one of my favorite ultimate traditions, you can meet new people
from far away places. And they are always happy and grateful for you opening
your home. And if you like to travel, you now know someone new who would
probably be excited to host you in return!

If you can host players for the weekend of October 11,12 let me know how many
(max) and any restrictions (e.g. no dogs) and perks (hot tubs always makes ulty
players giddy after a day of disc). When people come asking me for floorspace I
will direct them to you.

See you on the fields

Hey Fall '03 VOTS Ultimate League Players,

On Thurs, Sept 25 (that's tomorrow), we will be having
our Registration / Open Play night for Fall League.

What this means is:

- If you haven't signed up for league yet, this is your chance.
Show up with a completed registration form (which you can
obtain from http://www.vots.org), and payment of $25 (check
made out to VOTS or exact-change cash).

- If you're a beginner or near-beginner, we'll have an instructional
session where we go over the basic rules and strategy, then give
you a chance to play.

- If you're a returning player and just want to get some warm-up
play in before league starts, we'll have a field for that, too.

Where/when: Diablo Field 9, from 6-8pm. I believe there's
a field available for open play after 8pm, as well. For a map
to Diablo, see http://www.vots.org under "Let's Play".

If you can't make this session and you still want to sign up,
you can still sign up on-line at vots.org through Sunday. Also,
I will be at MCC for open play this Sunday, you can hand me
a registration at that time. REGISTRATION IS CLOSED AFTER SUNDAY.

See you at the fields,

Some of you have pointed out the http://www.vots.org is down, and that
you wanted to sign up on-line for league.

I don't know when vots.org will be back up, but you can still sign up
on-line by clicking on the following link:

https://www.onlyultimate.com/ind/signup_step1.cfm?ClientID=89&EventID=290

This should take you to a web page that says "Welcome to VOTS VOTS Fall League".
No, I don't know why we are "VOTS VOTS". It's ok, live with it.

Of course, you can still sign up in person tonight at Diablo. Diablo is on 48th
Street in Tempe, between Southern and Broadway, on the east side of
the road.

Hey, note, it's 4:30, not 5:00 because we're running out of
light.

For directions, check out www.vots.org (when it's back up).

Bring a white shirt, a dark shirt, water, cleats and a good attitude.

Howdy,

Our dearest Lareina is hitting 30 this October. To help celebrate
we are having a BBQ at the Rancho Murietta (our compound) pool.

Details:

Date: Saturday October 4
Time: 5pm
Place: Rancho Murietta Pool
1717 South Dorsey Lane

From Broadway and Rural go east on Broadway to the second set of
lights which is Dorsey. Turn left (North) and drive 200 meters to
the Rancho Murietta entrance on your right. The gates will be
open. Drive on in and park in any space that isn't covered. The
pool is right behind the Main Office.

No gifts please.
BYOB and what you'd like to BBQ.

For more info give me a shout at 480 699-7926 (it's alright this
is not a surprise).

Best regards,
Jason
