Hey everyone.
Due to a few drops/injuries from our really-not competitive NYF team, we
have a few openings if anyone is looking for a last minute pickup to a team.

Remember this team is 100% fun and 0% competitive (not that we don't try our
hardest, but honestly in the grand scheme of New Years Fest Tourney teams we
will suck).

If you've got an attitude that could rival for a spirit award and the desire
to play hard, then this might be the team for you!

Let me know if you're interested.
Thanks!
Liesl

New Years Fest is Sat. and Sun. Feb. 1-2.

If, on the other hand, you think of Super bowl Sunday as a day where nothing more strenuous than a run from the couch to the fridge is in order, then get out on Saturday morning instead!!!

I have a field reserved at Tempe Sports Complex (field #3) from 10am - Noon and am looking for takers to challenge our NYF team to a scrimmage.  We are trying to get in all the practice that we can since NYF is so close.  Our team will be out there no matter what, so if you want to come by, please feel free to do so.

Have a GREAT weekend,

So Jot has decreed that there will be no Sunday disc this weekend
due to some lowly football game between a team from the Geriatric
State vs. a team from the Slummiest City in the U.S. of A.  Sounds like
it's about as exciting as picking ripe toe jam.

This just doesn't seem to make sense to me. It's January, the weather
is perfect - assuming you're in AZ, and not back east where the high
temps have been lower than Moto's stock price.

So here's the deal: I think playing at high noon on Sunday is a great
alternative plan to playing not at all. I'll be waiting for at least nine
of you to send me an email at david.abdoo@... saying that
you'll come out and play at NOON on Sunday. (Surely you'll be out
of bed by then.) If I get at least nine positive responses by 2pm today,
I'll confirm (via another email) that Sunday noon disc is on. If you
don't see this confirmation email, there's no disc Sunday.

Where? Chandler Sunset park. From the corner of Ray & Rural,
head east on Ray just past the corner shopping center. It's about
a block east of Rural, along the north side of Ray.

What if that spot is already taken? If you arrive at Sunset Park
and see that it's already taken, then the alternate location is
Motorola at Price (101) and Elliot. Enter from the traffic light
on Elliot which is about 200 yards west of Price, turning
north into Moto. The fields are in front, to the right (softball
field).

I'm waiting... respond now only if you'll be there.

I guess the allure of football watching in late afternoon
will indeed cancel Sunday disc at noon. I've only got
5 responses (6 people, including me). And I'm not up
for another 3-on-3 mini-disc game like last weekend.

So Sunday disc is dead until the weekend after NYF.

I may have to go let Jack's NYF squad beat up on me
tomorrow...

Players,

Just to give you a heads up, spring league will run from March 4 to May 1,
with playoffs on May 3. Two notes about the upcoming league:

1. We have the field space to expand to 16 teams, and that's what we're
looking to do. This means that the bonus for signing up new players will
be coming back.

2. Games will be held on Tuesdays *and* Thursdays. Assuming there are 16
teams, I'm planning on making the schedules so that teams play 8 of their
9 games on the same day of the week.

The cost will remain the same: $17. The signup form should be available
sometime next week hopefully.

Ok, I've checked out the fields, and it looks to me
like TSC will be busy, and we'll have a hard time
getting a field (rumors of irrigation appear to be
vastly inflated).

So, at the recommendation of Kevin Hatch, we're going
to switch to Chandler Sunset Park. It appears to be
rarely used, the field is flat, and there is a nice little
playground if you want to bring children (I'm not talking
the furry ones :)

This park is located on Ray , east of Rural. It's on the
north side of Ray, just after the shopping center on the
north east corner.

You can find a map of the parks at:

http://www.chandleraz.org/recreation/park_map.pdf

I will update the hotline. See you all there about 3:30!

For anybody pondering about next month's competitive league, come to your senses
and register. The deadline is February 1, which is the Saturday after next. We
are currently standing at 36 registrants. I will be at the fields on Mondays and
Thursdays with forms. Another option is to go to the Web site at...

...and mail in your registration. And if you object in principle to 37-cent
stamps, you can drop your form and $5 off at my house, centrally located one

Ok, it's time for that weekly email. For those of you who have
been out to Tempe Sports Complex, you know to just look around for us,
for those that haven't, you still need to look around for us. :)
I'm going to try to drive by TSC on Saturday to see if it looks like
there is any big event going on or not. As usual, check the hotline
before you come out. I'll will make sure it's been updated by
sometime Sunday morning.

Last week was another good turnout, with 7's the whole time and a brief
time of two fields. The weather was gorgeous, and we can expect that again
this weekend.

For the longterm I think I'm going to look for another location that
we can use reliably. I'm currently leaning towards investigating either
a park about Dobson and Ray that looks promising, or perhaps Rhodes
Elementary at Longmore and Southern, I'll keep you up to date.
I have 2 reasons:

1) I want some place people can rely on
2) TSC is closed for most of February, which makes #1 problematic

Also, now is the time to look at our short term plans for Sunday.

We will NOT have Sunday Ultimate on Superbowl Weekend. Traditionally
there are parties and we just wouldn't have a turnout. This is on
Sunday the 26th, not this weekend but next weekend.

We will NOT have Sunday Ultimate the weekend of Feb 1st and 2nd, as
this is New Year's Fest weekend and if you're not playing you should
be either volunteering or watching.

Finally, new to the lost and found is a black Reebok shirt with a
red Reebok logo. I'm hoping no one will claim this, as it looks
pretty nice and would fit me great! :)

Ciao.

Capping registration for competitive league at 60 seemed like a good idea
at the time, but it wasn't. There will be no registration cap, and the
deadline remains February 1. What will still be capped, however, is the
number of people playing in competitive league. That number will be 60,
or four teams of 15. There will be no waiver pool, as the league director
claims he has better things to do with his time.

What this means is that it is possible that some players "on the bubble"
may not be drafted, and won't play. If you find yourself in this
position, you will be offered a refund of your $5, and some verbal or
written consolation to your bruised ego.

To sum up: no cap on registration, deadline February 1, $5 refund if you
aren't drafted. 60 shall be the number of players, and the number of
players shall be 60. No more, no less. 61 shalt thou not count, and
neither count thou 59. 62 is right out.

Got some free time on Tuesdays and Thursdays this February?

Know how to tell the difference between a swilly throw and a drop?

I will be repeating my position as co-Director/Official Scorer for the
Competitive League. I need someone to join me on the sidelines to
assist in fantasy scoring and judging mid-line position on potential
2-point throws. You'll do one game each night, I'll do the other one.

I'm accepting applications for this position starting now. I'll keep
the position open until after NYF, at which point I (and Mr. Polakis,
the *real* League Director) will select from among the applicants.

The Ideal Candidate will:

- Be one of the hot VOTS women, sidelined by some minor injury that
prevents her from playing Competitive League but doesn't diminish her
attractiveness or her saucy sideline repartee.

- Ok, this is really an equal opportunity position. Guys, you can apply
too. Although Shawn as an advantage due to how great he looks in a
tight leather outfit.

- MUST have a sense of humor and be willing to use it to survive the
verbal assaults that will come your way from league participants whose
mental image of their skill far outstrips its physical counterpart.

- Must be willing and able to make swift judgement calls during play.
No mamby-pamby, feel-good, everyone-is-trying-hard attitudes here. If
it wasn't complete, it was somebody's fault. It's your job to
apportion blame or reward hot play.

Apply by e-mail. Explain why this position BELONGS to you. Get this
job the old fashioned way... EARN it.

Notice the change in location! Tempe Sports Complex (TSC) is
located on Hardy (which is between Kyrene and I-10) just north
of Warner. Look for a field there with cones set up.

NOTE: This is tentative! I'm trying to make sure
there is availability. Additionally, if there is a Tempe
resident who is willing to make a call for me, please
send me email so we can go about trying to "reserve" the
fields. HOWEVER, make sure you check the hotline (602-230-4139)
before you come out in case we've had to change the location.

Now about last week, we had a great turnout! We ran two fields
of 7 on 7 with a few subs. This is in-spite of the short
notice location change. Speaking of which, I need to thank
several people for making sure Sunday happened.

1) Al Taylor - he called me Saturday to let me know Ward would
be closed, he scouted TSC and gave us a fighting chance at having
a good turnout.
2) Ken Mayer and Kevin Hatch - helped me figure out where were
likely places and where to check
3) Mike Yanko - Changed the hotline so people calling knew where to go
4) Dave Abdoo - Setting up a field so people going to TSC would
have a field to play on and wouldn't just bail.

My goal is to try to find a location that we can go to consistently
while Ward is being chopped up, which could be for a while. I'll
keep the email list up to date on where I am.

Thanks again to everyone.

"when you get there, act like you've been there before"

Wise words, those. It's only common sense that you'll improve your
chances if you're "familiar with the neighborhood". That's why the real
"players" will be joining me on Friday morning, January 31, for a
detailed lesson in Field Anatomy as we line the fields in preparation
for NYF. The half-day course will begin with a complimentary breakfast
at Harlow's (SW corner of University and Hardy) followed by short field
anatomy lessons at Diablo and Benedict.

Subjects to be covered include:

out-of-bounds: what is, and more importantly where is "out of bounds"

in-the-zone: how to get "in the zone" and how to tell when you're there

b-spot: the all important b-spot. When the time comes, you'll want
to be able to get there quickly, reliably, and repeatedly.
We'll spend extra time on making sure you can locate
          "the brick" spot.

I need a total of 10 interested anatomy students to meet at Harlow's at
8am on Friday the 31st. E-mail me if you're interested. The fields
will be pre-marked, so this will go quickly. I guarantee it!

I also need a graduate-assistant for this course. Your qualifications
include a truck capable of holding and transporting the foam pads to the
fields. Contact me if you'd like to be grad-ass for this.

Course tuition: ~4 hours manual labor
What do you get? breakfast, an NYF shirt, an NYF disc, and more time in
the zone than you'll likely have all weekend, along with my gratitude.

In keeping with traditions going back as far as traditions go...

Do you have some extra space in your home you can open up to travelling ultimate players over the New Years Fest Weekend (Feb 1,2)?  An extra bed or couch would be nice, but many people are quite satisfied with some floor space where they can place a thermarest and a shower.

Opening your home for the weekend is a fun and easy way to make New Years Fest an even better experience for travelling players.  You get to meet new people that you know are fun - they play ultimate!  So, not only do you get kudos for volunteering, you also get the chance to meet new friends.

Are you convinced yet? Let me know how much room you have and I will connnect you with a person, small group, or even a whole team who will be grateful for your generosity.

Thanks
Darrel

It's that time again....

VOTS is now looking for a volunteer to direct the upcoming Spring League.
This is a big opportunity to step up and help our organization continue to
offer a great League experience for all our players.

The Director is responsible for recruiting captains, establishing the draft
system, determining any League-specific rules, monitoring the budget,
coordinating game-day logistics, devising a playoff format, and generally
keeping an eye on things. If you've ever felt like you had a few good ideas
on how we could make League run a little bit better, here's your chance to
try them out!

You don't need to have any experience to volunteer for this job - first-time
directors are always welcomed.  You don't even have to do it by yourself;
some of the best-run leagues have had 2 or 3 co-directors. And there are
plenty of Directors Emeritus out there willing to lend advice, plus the
usual outstanding support from the rest of the VOTS community.

If you think you might be interested, talk to Jill or Ken. You can see us
out at the fields, or send an email our way. Please don't nominate other
players - but if there is someone you think would do a good job, why not ask
them if they want to co-direct with you?

Thanks for your help,

ken

Winter competitive league is coming soon! For those who are new to the
Valley's ultimate scene, this is a short set of six games and finals
played among four teams over a three-week period. It is a co-ed league
played by upper echelon players who don't need much instruction. It will
begin on February 6, and run on Tuesdays and Thursdays through February
25. More information may be found on the Winter Competitive League page
at http://www.vots.org/league/wintercompetitive2003/league.html.

Nothing has changed from last June's league, so if you know you're going
to play, go directly to the registration page at
http://www.vots.org/league/wintercompetitive2003/registration.html.
Registration deadline is February 1. It may be earlier than that, as we
will have a cap on number of players since there are only four teams.
There will be no late registrations.

Please let me know if you want to be one of the four captains. Two
players have already stepped forward. Who will dethrone Sam Levenberg,
whose teams have won the past two competitive leagues?

If you have any questions about competitive league, send me an e-mail or
talk to me on the fields, where I will be practicing for NYF.

Gang -

Sorry about the late notice, but Al called and let me know that
Ward is likely to be closed this Sunday, so no Ultimate there!

We're going to move to the Tempe Sports Complex, located on Hardy
north of Warner, on the east side of the road.

I suspect we'll get started a little later, as people will have to shift.
I'll work to get the hotline notice changed and I will go to Ward tomorrow
to redirect people. This is likely to be the case for a while,
as there is some sort of construction. This week I'll work on
getting us a new consistent home to play at. My goal is to
have a place that will be available week in a week out so we don't
miss people. I'll send email next week giving a location.

If you know someone coming out on Sunday, try to let them know the change
in plans.

We're still there. It's time for the first Sunday Ultimate of 2003!

Unless you are a real over-achiever, your hangover should be gone
by Sunday.

So, 3:30 pm. See you there.

Howdy Folks,

With the NYF coming up and various local women's and open teams looking to
practice, a round of emails has resulted in the following schedule for
January. Note that coed scrimmages per se are on hold until after the NYF,
but one of the local open teams is coed. If you aren't on a team, don't
hesitate to come on out. There should be room for everyone to fit in
somewhere.

As always bring a dollar or two to pitch in for lights.

Tues 1/7 Benedict 3; ladies 6-8, guys/open 8-10
Thurs 1/9 Diablo 9; guys/open 6-8, ladies 8-10
Mon 1/13 Diablo 9; ladies 6-8, guys/open 8-10
Thurs 1/16 Benedict 1; guys/open 6-8, ladies 8-10
Mon 1/20 Diablo 9; ladies 6-8, guys/open 8-10
Thurs 1/23 Diablo 9; guys/open 6-8, ladies 8-10
Mon 1/27 Diablo 9; ladies 6-8, guys/open 8-10
Thurs 1/30 Diablo 9; guys/open 6-8, ladies 8-10

Notice that a couple of sessions, including next week's, are at Benedict.
