Subject: [vicbugchat] BUG get together

Dear fellow BUG members

It’s quite a while since we’ve had a meeting of BUGs. Boroondara BUG currently has a meeting place that should work well for a get together – the function room at the Elgin Inn on the corner of Burwood Rd and Elgin St, Hawthorn. It’s right on the 75, Vermont South, tram line and very close to Hawthorn Station on the Belgrave/Lilydale line.

Chris or Steve from Yarra BUG have agreed to join us for our next meeting on Thursday 12th November and we are hoping that others may be able to come too. They would like to talk about Yarra Bend Park. Other possible agenda items are: naming and signing of off-road trails; enforcing of standards for construction of off-road paths and bicycle infrastructure generally; and making all TravelSmart maps available online from a single site. If you would like to add to this list please feel free.

We meet at 6.30pm for a meal, ordered from the bar downstairs, and start the meeting at 7.30pm.

Can you please let me know if you are able to come and whether you’ll be eating or not by Monday 9th November? And please spread the word to any BUGs that are not Vicbugchat members.

Julia Blunden, Boroondara BUG

Melbourne BFF Launches this Thursday!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
It's hard to believe that there are just two sleeps to go till
the Melbourne BFF launches this Thursday with the opening of the
BFF Art Show - Sweet Ride. It's been a long and uphill journey
but we are pleased and proud to have finally made it to the top.
What we have made (a festival) is ALL FOR YOU - so please, join
us for the ride. Book tickets at www.bicyclefilmfestival.com
[http://www.bicyclefilmfestival.com/?p=melbourne] and come along
to all of our free events. This is your chance to represent and
celebrate bike culture in your city. See you there!

Local Shorts - get into them
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Come along to Human Powered
[http://www.humanpoweredcafe.com.au/?p=312] this Friday 13 and
Saturday 14 Nov for our LOCAL SHORTS. With two screenings per
night (one at 6.30pm and a repeat screening at 8.30pm) there will
be plenty of time for you to grab a drink and some food from the
Human Powered cafe while you catch up with old friends (and maybe
even make some new ones...) Including introductions by the
filmmakers, the BFF Local Shorts program features films by Isobel
Knowles, Angie Hart, Peter Tsipas, Bojun Bjorkman-Chiswell,
Bicycles for Humanity, David Olle, Joske & ZBD, Rod McMillan and
BFF Patron, 8 year old Orla Mundy. The screenings are FREE,
arrival at 6pm or 8pm for 6.30 and 8.30 screenings.

Sweet Ride
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Did you ever go to an art show and think - "Geez, I'd like to
carry the memory of that artwork with me in a subtle yet
indelible fashion, in a way that recalls the spirit of the work
yet also speaks to my personal love for the subject matter." No?
Really? Well prepare yourself for something new. BFF Art Show,
Sweet Ride artist Robert Cook has created extremely nifty
bicycle-inspired designs that you can take straight from his
drawing book to the tattoo parlour. You might want to talk to
Danny Young, another Sweet Ride artist and well known Melbourne
tattooist about getting them inked. Either way, Sweet Ride will
definitely make an impression. Opening this Thursday 12 November
at 7pm. Open everyday till 29 November at BFF Hub 1000 £ Bend.

Sweet as you want to be
-----------------------------------------------------------------
In case you haven't noticed, the cycling world can be a bit of a
blokey domain. We are especially aware of this at the Melbourne
BFF because we are in fact, not blokes. Not to say there aren't
blokes involved. We have a number of them on the committee and
occasionally we let them make a decision (!) - but for the most
part, the Melbourne BFF is run entirely by women. Which, it's
clear to us, is why it's so good. So imagine our excitement in
recent times with the proliferation of all-girl activities in
Melbourne's cycling scene. Team BFF was proud to race in
Melbourne's first ever all girls alleycat,
[http://ponybikes.blogspot.com/2009/10/pony-bikes-and-death-becomes-her_30.html]
and we're also sweet with the all girl Sugar Spokes
[http://sugarspokes.wordpress.com/] . The way we see it, the
cycling movement is only going to improve with more female
presence. So if you're not a bloke - take note, the wheels are
turning in your favour.

Group Therapy
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Calling all Bicycle Groups - the BFF has seen into your mind.
This year we have a special ticket price for groups of 20, just
$14 per ticket (a $3 saving per ticket). What better opportunity
for your group to organise a social outing, dropping by a BFF
Film Program screening before heading on down to our festival hub
to see the art show and enjoy a few cold ones on what is bound to
be a hot Melbourne night. With 6 film programs to choose from and
2 weeks to make a plan, NOW IS THE TIME TO BOOK YOUR TICKETS
[http://bicyclefilmfestival.com/?p=melbourne]. You might like to
check out Anima D'Acciaio (Soul of Steel)
[http://www.vimeo.com/5519990] by Daniel Leeb, screening as part
of the Urban Bike Shorts Program on Friday 27 November at 9pm.
