Hello fellow cyclists,

I just sent this email around to all the convenors etc. of BUGs. In case you didn't get it, here it is.

Hope you're having a wonderful Friday before Christmas.

Please note, the Cycling Promotion Fund office will be closed between Christmas and the New Year.

Hope you have a good one.

Kathy Brunning
Executive Assistant.

Dear members of the cycling community,

The Cycling Promotion Alliance was established at a historic meeting in Canberra in August 2002, which brought together the entire sector including competitive cycling clubs, advocacy groups, professional associations, industry bodies and others. This summit was an initiative of the Cycle Promotion Fund who facilitated the creation of an independent body and continue their commitment through support of its operations.

The grassroots muscle of the Alliance comes from thousands of people who care about cycling, whether it be for commuting, riding recreationally, riding for fitness or competitively

The focus of the Alliance Executive has been lobbying federally for greater support for cycling from all relevant government portfolios. This has involved a number of campaigns to get a better deal for cycling and to foster communication and cooperation among key groups and individuals likely to affect cycling outcomes in Australia.

The external environment has changed considerably in the last four years and it is an opportune time to review and reassess our approach to ensure the sector can take advantage of emerging opportunities at the federal government level.

To assist the cycling sector move forward to achieve improved outcomes for cycling at the national level we encourage you fill in a survey online and provide us with your feedback and comments.

Have your say: fill out the survey online at

http://snipurl.com/15jsj

it will only take a few minutes.

On behalf of the Cycling Promotion Alliance and the Cycling Promotion Fund I would like to thank you all for your wonderful contribution to cycling. The cycling sector is very fortunate to have so many people and organisations that are committed to make a difference.

We look forward to working together with you in 2007 to ensure we are able to take advantage the emerging opportunities. There has never been a better time to get support for cycling from Governments, the business and community sector.

Kind regards

Rosemarie Speidel

First of all - a cheery seasons greeting to all bicycle user groups and
sincerely hope Santa brings you a bike or related componentry, or
something you really prefer!

YarraBUG will be recommencing meetings in February, although we've planned
for a ride in January, and you're all most welcome to come along.

The ride will be about 15k’s all up and we will be taking a leisurely pace
along bike paths, quieter streets and ending for a yummy evening meal.

Ride details: Wednesday January 18th - 6.30pm meet at Gipps Street,
Collins Bridge in Abbotsford. Riding up to the Yarra Boulevard to the
Chandler Highway and return to Abbotsford to the Carringbush Hotel (228
Langridge Street) for a delicious meal and refreshing beverage or two.

If necessary we will have two groups - one for faster riders and the rest
of us who prefer a more genteel pace. Note: if you prefer to ride in the
slower group, we will wait for you on the hills, no one gets left behind!
All rides start at 6.30pm, more details for the February & March rides
TBA.

Christmas News from Cycling Promotion Fund:

Two wheeled cure for Christmas over-eating
The Bicycle Industry encourages Australians to buy bicycles for Christmas,
a perfect, guilt free seasonal treat. A new bike for Christmas can be the
ideal gift for anyone from toddlers to grandparents.

"Giving bikes to your kids has the added benefit of reducing demand for
Mum's taxi. Kids who ride bikes regularly are fitter, learn better and
make safer drivers later in life."

****

Not forgetting, please start thinking about your BUG's presentation at the
Sustainable Living Festival on 16th - 18th February 2007.
http://www.slf.org.au/festival/

At this festival the Cycling Promotion Fund have kindly footed the bill
for the shared 6x3 double marquee. When I was negotiating the stall, a
standard 3x3m marquee was $550, so we should be very thankful to CPF
helping us out.

A couple of us will be working on the shared marquee for the CPF/BUG's
over that weekend so I'll inform you all in January and Febuary about
organisational details, logistics and the all important bump-in, bump out
stuff when the SLF organisers pass on the details.

May you all have a enjoyable & peaceful time during the break.

cheers,

Chris;)

Hi all,

In regards to local support for bike shops, YarraBUG's site is
sponsored by Abbotsford Cycles, and if you look at our website, the
righthand column has links to most bike shops located in the Yarra
area. If you know of any missed, please drop me a email!

http://www.yarrabug.org

So we see it more as a case of supporting your local community over
rampant commercialism.

Back to the Sustainable Living Festival, TravelSmart have produced a
series of maps we could probably use, see here: http://tinyurl.com/w6f2y

Although not all areas have been covered yet, and I remember the
numerous enquiries at the Bicycling Australia Show about other BUG's
not in the metro Melbourne area.

Also Rosemarie fron Cycling Promotion Fund has mentioned the
possibility of getting bike shop representation at this shared CPF/BUG
marquee.

Thoughts?

cheers,

Chris ;)

Dear Geoff,
I have provided for your enjoyment (Sticky taping and highlighting) an idea of what the HBBUG is planning to do in the HBBUG small flyer (now out of date) attached and a blank map of the general area of Hobson's Bay, also attachment.
Graycross Bicycle Superstore in HoppersXing, Salter's Cycles in Altona Meadows, Willys Wheels in North Williamstown and John Beasley Cycles in Footscray are those Bicycle Shops we would support.
I think promoting Bicycle Shops is not commercialism, it is reality, particularly if you want a bicycle shop in your area.  Given it is easy for a bicycle shop owner to go broke these days!
Thank you for your efforts in promoting BUGs.

Hi All
If a wall sized Melways is not available, and it might be a bit big anyway, if we can get hold of as many travelsmart maps with the borders neatly removed, they sticky tape together well. A couple of Highlighters to mark the boundaries and done! I have expanded on this one below to include a couple of new maps that I have gathered. It is up on the wall at my workplace. While I'm here if you are interested, please send me your BUG details and boundary so I can mark them on my map, I do the induction for our new staff and discuss how best to ride to work from their home and if I can I pass on local BUG details.

I would also like to see how groups feel on this one, many of the BUGs are supported by local bike shops, would it be OK if we had a level of support for them, I.e displayed their business cards. Might help legitimise their support for your BUG, but I would understand if it was seen as a bit if commercialisation?
Anyway, just brainstorming here so feel happy to condemn or cheer!

This will be a great event for promoting BUG's - with

The space will be a *large* covered 3 x 6 meter
marquee at Federation Square during the festival.

Display ideas;
Feedback from the Bicycling Australia Show in Oct -
many people didn't know what a BUG actually was.
Simple information in point form etc, on a couple of
A3 laminated sheets + nice graphics should fix that.
Also a large Melways map showing metro
Melbourne/Victoria and the BUG areas (via council
boundaries) would be great.

The Farmer's market at the Collingwood Children's Farm is still on, and I'll still be taking at least one of my kids for the ride.

If you'd like to join the Darebin BUG for a leisurely ride (it's under 5km each way), meet 9.30 for a 9.45 start at Jika Jika Community House, cnr Plant and Union Streets in Northcote.

You'll probably want a cold bag to take your food home in, plus you'll need a gold coin for entry. We're usually back by 12.30 - 1, but we won't mind if we part company at the farm. I'm pretty slow getting up the hill toting kids and shopping, so I'd probably just slow you down.

Don't forget your sunscreen, and plenty of water!

Happy cycling,

Hi Anna,

Wise choice! There's a couple of other rides planned
for Saturday that have been cancelled or postphoned.

I'd love to go for a ride as much as the next person,
but player comfort is important! Especially if there's
little kids involved (or big kids).

Jan sounds good. BTW - who's going to Geelong on Jan
7th for Amy's Ride?

cheers,

Chris ;)

Hi all,

Those of you who have been to the BoM's website lately www.bom.gov.au may have noticed that it's going to be a scorching 37 degrees on Saturday... not the optimum weather for a ride to Eltham methinks!! I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't have any other weekend days free between now and chrissy, so thought that maybe instead we could have a group ride in the new year - say, 30th Jan when people will be back from holidays and recovered from the festive season?

Let me know what you think,

Anna

Hi Anna,

Wise choice! There's a couple of other rides planned
for Saturday that have been cancelled or postphoned.

I'd love to go for a ride as much as the next person,
but player comfort is important! Especially if there's
little kids involved (or big kids).

Jan sounds good. BTW - who's going to Geelong on Jan
7th for Amy's Ride?

cheers,

Chris ;)

Hi all,

A message from Karen about YarraBUG's upcoming
Wednesday Night Wind Down Ride. We are planning more
of these over the summer months, so stay tuned & tell
your friends!

****

Hi everyone,

YarraBUG invites all interested riders to come along
to an inner city circle ride on Wednesday 6 December.

Meeting at 6.30pm outside the bakery on the corner of
Queens Pde and Michael St, North Fitzroy riders will
head along the bike path to Royal Park then ride along
the river through to Docklands where we can grab a
bite to eat.

The return ride will see us take a light traffic route
through the north of the city ending up on Canning St
before returning to our starting spot.

The ride will be about 15k's all up and we will be
taking a leisurely pace along bike paths. The ride is
suited to all bikes and it is highly recommended that
riders bring a puncture repair kit, pump and weather
appropriate clothing.

As the ride will commence at twilight and end in the
evening riders must have adequate lighting for night
riding and a helmet.

Any queries, please call Karen on 0419412401.

Hi all,

A bunch of Moreland BUGgers will be getting together for an end-of-year ride on Sat 9th December, and we'd love to be joined by other BUG folk.

We're meeting at the Fairfield Boathouse at 11am and riding along the Main Yarra Trail out to Eltham Station, a 23km ride that will go at family-friendly pace and stop along the way for a picnic lunch. http://www3.visitvictoria.com/displayObject.cfm/ObjectID.000C61A3-62CD-1A7F-8AE680C476A90000/vvt.vhtml

Bring yourself, some picnic food and whatever else you think might help to create a lovely ride!!

It'd be great (but not essential) if you could let me know beforehand whether you'll be joining us.

Ciao for now,

Anna

Subject: [vicbugchat] BUG catchup #5, 7pm Wednesday night - Union Club Hotel, cnr Gore and Webb St, Fitzroy

Hi everyone...

The aim of tomorrow night will be to develop a calendar of BI Monthly
dates for 6 catchups over 2007, with each catchup to have a:

- THEME
- HOST BUG/GROUP (and organiser)
- and DATE and VENUE

Some suggested themes could be:

Building membership (paid/free, understanding the value of membership)
Social Events and Local Advocacy, getting the balance right.
Organising Rides (insurance, promotion, etc)

HOST BUG:
The host bug for each catchup could book the venue and coallate
RSVP's. They could also provide a welcome and an overview of their
area and recent improvements or current campaigns.

DATE / VENUE:
Dates should all be set at the start of the year and take into account
all BUG's regular meeting times.

Venues should have a comfortable social atomsphere and allow mingling
(unlike restaurant seating).

PUB Selection Criteria
suitably located
right balance of alcohol and food
an absence of fluorescant lighting
informal atmosphere

If you would like to be one of these 6 host's but can't make it
tomorrow night, or if you would like to suggest a theme, please let me
know.

Over the next week, the 6 hosts will collaberate via e-mail to develop
the calendar and distribute it at BUG catchup #6:

* Wednesday the 20th of December

No one from MazzaBUG will be present at this catchup as the last Wednesday
of every month is our meeting night, so please keep that in mind when
setting the calendar for next years' catchups. Thanks as we'd like to be
able to be there too : )

We could probably even volunteer to be a host but I'd have to run it past
Hector first since I won't be in the country to organise it!

Dear Yarra BUG,

Melbourne City Bikes is letting the Victorian Greens
use their fleet of eight bikes on Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday for election advertising purposes. These are
no ordinary bikes - see www.citybike.com.au.

We need to supply the riders, and to fill the roster
by the end of TODAY (Wednesday 15th), as we have to
organise and pay for the ad artwork tomorrow.

We need eight fairly fit people with current drivers'
licences to ride them around for four hours at a time.

Where: Melbourne's CBD and inner north

When: 12.00 noon to 4pm next Monday 20th, Tuesday 21st
and Wednesday 22nd November.

More information: Alison Clarke, 9602 1141 or 0402 075
306, or pc@...

Why would you want to do this: Because the Greens
support more and better bike lanes, bike parking,

Hi Everyone!

If you're not planning on coming on the MazzaBUG overnight ride to French
Island then I would encourage you to do you bit to help support cycling and
the arts by helping out at the Footscray Art Centre's "Go Show". This
Saturday night - 7pm - 10pm.

Sandy is looking for some volunteers to be bike ambassadors to lead groups
to the various performance locations. So if you fancy yourself as a bit of
an ambassador and would like to experience the delights of the "Go Show"
including a Sudanese coffee making ceremony, ballroom dancing from the
Chinese Happy Age Association, an exhibition of Vietnamese martial arts and
Flash Mobs from Victoria University student performers - then give Sandy a
call to get involved, 9362 8806 or e-mail sandy@....

If you're not able to make it but know of some cyclists who would jump at
the opportunity then please forward on through your networks.
Thanks!

       GET UP AND GO!

Get on your bike or jump on board our bus for a whirlwind tour of
Footscray with The GO Show. Let The GO Show tour guides take you to
iconic locations - visit Footscray Community Arts Centre, Maddern
Square and Whitten Oval, spiritual home of the Western Bulldogs, and
watch a FREE live performance event unfold in an ever changing,
       suburb sized performance space.

Please find attached the media release for our latest performance The GO
Show. The GO Show is a collaborative performance between the Footscray
Community Arts Centre, the Western Bulldogs and participants drawn from the
West.

For The GO Show we are interested in promoting the show to bike riders by
encouraging our audience to meet at Footscray Community Arts Centre (with
their bikes) p/u a map and follow a Bike Ambassador to the 3 performance
venues used in the show.

I would appreciate it if you would pass an invitation to The GO Show onto
your members.

We are interested in getting 8 volunteer Bike Ambassadors’ to lead the bike
riding groups to venues used in the performances, they will be needed to
lead the bike riders between 7.00-10.00pm on the 16th-19th November.

Could you please email me: sandy@... if you can suggest
Bike Ambassadors for the GO Show, and please do not hesitate to call me for

Hi everyone,

a last minute invite to come out to the Union club Hotel tonight (7pm
onwards) to meet with Nathan who works for Transportation Alternatives
(www.transalt.org) in New York. He's in town for 4 days and I thought
it'd be great a great opportunity to get a bunch of cyclists together.
(Advocates, Planners, Activists and Messengers)

Union Club Hotel is Cnr of Gore and Webb St, Fitzroy.

There will also be lots of Melbourne messengers, including Aly from
Dublin who is making a short Doco whilst he's preparing to host the
International Courier championships next year.

Hope you can make it!

cheers

Damon

Hi all (again!)

Please read the following email & petition forwarded on behalf of Graeme Cross
from Moreland BUG.

If you can make copies of this petition (and sign ti!) regarding the Video Ezy
issue on the Linear Park & bring them to either the Moreland Council meeting on
Wednesday or send them direct to Moreland council.

cheers,

Chris ;)

Time for action on the City of Moreland plans for the Video Ezy site on
the Linear Park...

The problem (quoting Anna's original email):

Any of you who have pedalled through the Park St Linear Reserve once or
twice will be familiar with the former Video Ezy building next to the
Nicholson St crossing. Moreland Council had previously committed to
demolishing the building when its lease ran out and converting the area
into public open space, with much-needed improvements to the bike path
there to be carried out as part of the plan. The lease has now come to
an end, and Moreland council has performed a disappointing backflip.

They now intend to investigate options for another business there
instead. The bordering Yarra Council has firmly stated its desire that
the building be demolished, and we'd like you all to add to the pressure

Hi all,

Remember - tomorrow is Walk Against Warming. Here's info about the walk +
details of walk locations. Given the amount of people who maybe attending, it
will probably prove to be polite and *walk* your bike.

See you there!

cheers,

Chris ;)

Melbourne - 1pm Town Hall (walk to Birrarung Marr)

International Day of Action on Climate Change - Saturday, Nov 4th 2006
http://www.walkagainstwarming.org/

WHY WALK
We know that Australians care about global warming. From switching to energy
efficient light bulbs, to installing solar hot water, to walking to the shops
instead of driving, people all across the country are pitching in to reduce
their own greenhouse gas emissions.

Unfortunately the actions of individuals in their own homes won't be enough to
stop global warming. Governments, industries and the community all have to work
together if we are to see the real
reductions in greenhouse gas emissions that are so necessary if we are to avoid
dangerous climate change taking place. We need laws put in place to make sure
more of our electricity comes from sources such as wind and solar and gradually
less from polluting fuels like coal. And the same can be said for the petrol in
our cars.

But Governments will only enact the necessary laws if enough people are telling
them they are deeply concerned about global warming - and one of these ways is
to march on the streets about it.

At last year's Walk against Warming, people of all ages and backgrounds - kids,
parents pushing babies in prams, cyclists, city workers, students and senior
citizens, joined thousands of everyday Australians on the streets.

Many people said they were marching for the first time and were thrilled to have
been able to be a part of the fun and peaceful event. This year, the organisers
are hoping that even more people will take
