2. YarraBUG Coffee & Cake outing: As discussed at our

I've altered group settings so people can post
messages to the entire group. Please keep in mind,
when you post something - it goes to the other 95
people on the list! Also, as common sense dictates
with posting anything on the internet - please keep
your firewall/virus protection up to date!

4. If you want to have longer 'threaded discussions',
please feel free to use the forum at yarra.net that
Ian Quick kindly setup for us:
http://www.yarra.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=8/

5. The Bike Buddy Rides will be starting soon at North
Yarra Community Health, please contact Elliot if you
can assist:
From Elliot: Hi All, I work at North Yarra Community
Health on a Healthy Transport program. Its called
Bicycling for Health and Transport. It aims to help
those that wish to cycle but don't have the financial
means or knowledge to start. We provide participants
with a freshly serviced bike, new helmet, lock and
lights as well as a bicycle instruction program. We
really need the help of experienced bicyclists (you
guys). We will have weekly rides (thursday afternoon)
and it would be great to have other experienced riders
to help out. Also, a Buddy system will help
inexperienced riders when they encounter simple
problems like a flat tyre.

All you need to do is offer your phone number that a
participant can call if they get themselves in a
tricky bike situation. The participants are primarily
poor people having recently arrived in Australia. This
program will give them a new skill, a cheap form of
transport, improved health and a brighter future
generally. I welcome any support Yarra BUG members are
able to provide.
Thanks,

Elliot Fishman

Subject: Bicycling Achievement Award nominations
closing next week

The 2005 Bicycling Achievement Award nominations are
due to close next Wednesday, 31 August. This is the
first time that the Awards feature cash prizes – don’t
miss this opportunity to have your favourite
bicycle-friendly club, school, volunteer, council,
politician, individual or business recognised.

Self-nominations are acceptable, as are those for
people and organisations that have been previously
nominated. Through the Awards we hope to promote,
commend and reward the good work being done by bicycle
advocates and others to make Australia more
bicycle-friendly. The nominations of the winners and
nominees will be written into a booklet, to showcase
the good work being done around Australia.

Nomination forms can be downloaded from our website:
http://www.cyclingpromotion.com/Cycle%20Awards%20Form%20for%20web.pdf
– and can be filled in online, saved and emailed
directly (or printed and sent) to us with your
nomination.

Booklets detailing the winners and nominees from
previous years can be downloaded from
http://www.cyclingpromotion.com/network.htm.
Alternatively, contact Kathy at the office:
cfund@... or phone 03 9818 5400 for
hard copies.

Please feel free to call or email me if you'd like
further information. Apologies if you’ve recently sent
in a nomination. Good on you for helping us to make
Australia more bicycle-friendly!

Happy cycling,

7. From Pedal Power ACT: Fitz's Challenge Bike Ride
November 20 2005

Fellow Cyclist,

I am writing to advise you of the running of the 18th
Fitz's Challenge Bike ride and to seek your assistance
in notifying your members of the event. You may or may
not be aware of the Fitz's Challenge, Canberra's
premier mass participation ride. What originally
started out as a challenge amongst a small group of
cyclists back in 1988 has now developed into a cycling
event that attracts over 500 riders and offers a range
of distances from the 48 kilometre Tidbinbilla
Challenge to the 215 kilometre Fitz's Epic.

The rides are based around the picturesque rural
village of Tharwa, five kilometres south west of the
Canberra urban fringe, and take place over quiet
scenic undulating roads in the Brindabella Mountains.
The Tidbinbilla Challenge includes an optional coffee
stop at the world renown Tidbinbilla Tracking Station,
while the Epic has been rated at least as difficult as
the Alpine Classic (please see the attached comparison
of the two rides). This year's event will be run on 20
November 2005.

Details of the event are available from the internet,
http://www.pedalpower.org.au/events/ and follow the
prompt for Fitz's Challenge. Online entires will also
be available from this site in the near future. Entry
fees are extremely modest for an event of this type,
and include entry into prize draws and a showbag of
goodies. Whether you are a recreational rider or a
'gun' endurance athelete, there is a ride to
challenge and entertain you. I would appreciate it if
you could let your members know of this event and
where to find the details.
