Transport
Panel | Why developing a bicycle friendly city is essential in a carbon and oil
constrained future
Sunday
22nd February: 2:00pm - 2:50pm | Location: Design tent | Hosted by Institute
for Sensible Transport
Developing
a bicycle friendly city is essential if Melbourne is to meet the challenges of
climate change and oil depletion. As petrol free, greenhouse neutral and health
form of transport that has limited space requirements, the bicycle has a strong
future in urban transport. Cycling is currently increasing rapidly, including
as a form of transport. This is primarily in the inner city. In many outer
areas, we are seeing a reduction in cycling and other sustainable forms of
transport.

Transport
Panel | Sustainable and accessible Transport in the context of climate change
Sunday
22nd February: 3:00pm - 3:50pm | Location: Design tent |Hosted by Monash
Sustainability Institute
Janet
will talk about the important role of sustainable transport in promoting social
inclusion and well-being. The ability to be mobile enables people to link to
services as well as facilitates social relationships and networks within the
community. The poorest households on the fringes of cities often struggle with
transport poverty as they seek to retain one or more cars in a situation of low
public transport availability and poor walking options.
Transport
Panel | Sustainable Transport – How Can We Get There?
Sunday
22nd February: 3:00pm - 3:50pm | Location: Design tent | Hosted by Bus
Association Victoria
Transport
is the second largest sector of Victoria’s greenhouse gas emissions, and
business-as-usual is forecast to increase emissions by 60% over the next 30
years. Turning this around requires new thinking about how we plan our cities
and transport systems. This presentation will look at current transport trends
and just what magnitude of transformation is required to make our transport
systems significantly more sustainable.
