Fight Eddington's East-West Tunnel!   Message List

(NB: apologies if you’ve seen this more than once)

Hi everyone,

There's been a lot of great chat here recently about opposition to freeway construction. Although Eastlink is now a reality, there's a looming fight in the inner city about the Eddington Report's East-West Tunnel proposal. This is generating a lot of opposition and a huge groundswell of community anger.

Kensington residents are organising a big protest rally against the Eddington Report's freeway & tunnel proposals. We're aiming to attract 100's of people, if not 1000's, so if you'd like to come along to the rally we'd love your support!

The rally is on this Saturday June 21 at 2pm -- the venue is the Kensington Community Centre, Altona St, Holland Park, Kensington. Although a large focus of the rally is on the effects that the proposed East-West freeway tunnel will have on Kensington, one of the main aims of the rally is also to keep the pressure on the City of Melbourne's Councillors to uphold their recent Planning Committee decision that reversed Council's support of the tunnel.

The Melbourne Council will be meeting on Tues 24/6 to endorse -- or overturn -- the Planning Committee decision, so we want to let the Councillors know that the tunnel is a huge issue for their constituents. John So wants the tunnel but 4 of the 9 other councillors are publicly opposed and the rest are either wavering or undecided. If we can get just 1 of the undecideds to vote against the Tunnel, then the City of Melbourne will have made an historic change in its policy away from a pro-freeway policy and in favour of sustainable transport.

Full information about the Rally is on the flyer found at this link:

best wishes
Justin

PS: There have been -- and will be -- HEAPS of anti-Tunnel activities from a broad range of groups. Keep your eyes & ears out for them if you fancy getting involved in a grassroots movement that will be vital in protecting our city from unsustainable freeway development.

Hello Justin, While outrage at the potential JJ Holland Park hole in the ground is understandable, let's not forget the Flemington area in all of this. If ...
