Subject: [vicbugchat] bike and food project
Hi all,
I can’t remember whether this has been sent to the list already – thought some of you may be interested in a food sharing project being run by Environment Victoria. The project needs volunteers for the first stage, which will mainly involve riding around looking for houses that grow fruit and veg and have excess produce to develop a “food map” of the area. More details below – sounds like a fun project to be involved with, contact Michael if you’re interested.
Cheers, Anna

Environment Victoria is working with a number of neighbourhood houses to develop a local food project to collect unharvested fruit and vegetables from residents in Moreland, Darebin, and Yarra areas and distribute them to people in need.
The first step of the project involves developing a simple food map of exactly which houses in the community have this excess produce and are willing to donate it. The food map would then be the 'blueprint' for the second step of the project – the collection of the fruit.
To develop this food map we need a small group of volunteers.
The tasks would generally involve:
- walking or bicycling around local areas in Moreland, Darebin, and Yarra
- visually identifying fruit trees
- briefly meeting the owners and having a brief chat about project
- recording the details of interested participants
- dropping off flyers publicising the project
- Volunteers could also have input into the overall development of the project.
Ideally volunteers would:
- have an interest in food and where it comes from
- have an interest and knowledge of their local community
The mapping will take place in early/mid June, and will take approximately two weeks. The surveying itself will be two weekday 4-6pm sessions/week (depending on volunteer availability) .
