Inquiry still possible in McGee hit-run case

The South Australian Government says an independent
inquiry into the way police handled the Eugene McGee
case is still a possibility. Attorney-General Michael
Atkinson concedes there is still a great deal of
suspicion in the community in regards to the McGee
case. Adelaide lawyer Eugene McGee has admitted he hit
cyclist Ian Humphrey on the Gawler to Kapunda Road, in
the Barossa Valley, in late 2003 and did not stop. He
pleaded guilty to driving without due care and awaits
sentence. Police are re-interviewing two brothers who
say their original police statements were incorrectly
recorded, and an investigation into how police handled
the case is now under way. Mr Atkinson has not ruled
out a further independent inquiry. (More in article)

Eugene McGee will be sentenced on Thursday, and
probably get a slap on the wrists for a lapse of
professional judgement. Please send emails and/or

yet another travesty of justice.

This incident in South Australia only serves to
reinforce negative connotations that cyclists are
solely to blame in ANY altercation, that the act of
cycling on the roads is somehow both an excuse and
incitement to injury or murder another human being.
