UNDERSTANDASCOPE EVENT NOTICE
The first of a series of monthly public forums on the big topics of our
day will be held on Wednesday 4 July in the BMW Edge at Federation
Square.
'At Last - The Greening: Celebrating public recognition of the human
factor in global warming' is part of the Life, the Universe and
Everything public discussion series.
Experts, advisors, leading citizens and the public will be able to 'chew
the fat' on tough contemporary issues according to Associate Professor
Frank Fisher, founder of the Understandascope at Monash University and
convenor of graduate programs at the National Centre for Sustainability
at Swinburne.
"Public debate on global warming will be critical in order to build long
term community support for the changes proposed by government on water,
energy and lifestyle," he said.
The discussion series will provide a forum for a mix of ideas and
insights to be generated by people from all walks of life.
"Concerned members of the public will be able to gain an insider's view
about what it is like to be a Global Warming Crusader from Chris Burnup
- an Al Gore volunteer," said Associate Professor Fisher.
"Further, Cr Fraser Brindley will uncover the ideas behind Melbourne
City Council's Green Machine, and Rod Quantock will work his magic in
summing up the key issues that we must address in relation to global
warming."
Others appearing include Kate Brennan (CEO Fed Square Pty Ltd); Geoff
Mabbett (CEO Sustainability Victoria); Peter Ellyard (futures analyst);
Jill Singer (journalist); Tom Hafey (AFL/Origin Energy); and Professor
Graeme Davison (historian).
Associate Professor Fisher said that the role of the Understandascope is
to facilitate a transformation in how we engage with the world by
enabling debate and analysis around issues such as the environment,
health, education, society, science, communication and resource
management.
Entry will be with a gold coin donation for Oxfam and free range green
biodynamic apples will be available in Oxfam baskets.
