Moonee Valley Community News: Two nominate for Debney byelection

TWO Moonee Ponds residents have announced their intention to run in the
Moonee Valley Council byelection for Debney Ward on March 3.

The election will fill the vacancy left by the death of Moonee Valley
councillor Lydia Kauzlaric on November 29.

Nominations for the postal election close at 4pm on January 31.

Former Keating government adviser Nicole Kepert has announced her candidacy.

Ms Kepert, who is employed with the Community and Public Sector Union, has
previously held the roles of ALP local government committee president and
Australian Services Union research officer and organiser.

She is a member of the ALP, Amnesty International, World Society for the
Protection of Animals, and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

A Moonee Valley resident for the past three years, Ms Kepert ran for the
state seat of Prahran in 1996.

"I've been dissatisfied with the quality of representation on council in
general, although I thought Lydia was a very good representative," she
said.

"In particular, I've been concerned about some planning issues and I
believe I could do a better job, bringing a number of skills to the
table."

Engineer and sustainable transport advocate Frank Kinnersley has also
announced his intention to fill the vacancy.

Mr Kinnersley is a member of the Moonee Valley Bicycle User Group,
Essendon Bushwalking Club, Melbourne Bicycle Touring Club, Railtrails
Australia, Inner Northern Community Road Safety Council, Moonee Valley
police community consultative committee, and Bicycle Victoria.

However, the Moonee Valley resident of 23 years is not a member of any
political organisation.

"I'm standing because I want to represent the community," he said.
