2005 NAS-TRACK TEAM RACING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Velodrome at Bloomer Park
Friday Night July 29, 2005
Team Neon Dave Koesel & Ronnie Sink and Team Purple Steve Mlyujeak & Tony Bruley
battle it out for 2005 NAS-TRACK TEAM RACING CHAMPIONSHIPS!
Team Neon Ronnie Sink and Dave Koesel WIN 3rd NAS-TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS!
Rochester Hills, Michigan -- It was a duel between two duos, Team Purple
with Steve Mlujeak and Tony Bruley and Team Neon with Dave Koesel and Ronnie
Sink. By the end of the evening, one or the other would be crowned NAS-TRACK
Champion and although there were other teams on the track, these two teams set
out to dominate -- and did.
Championship race action took place Friday, July 29 th at the Velodrome in
Bloomer Park in Rochester Hills with nine teams, 18 racers, amassing points in
four separate events -- the 1 mile sprint, the miss & out, a 50 Lap Madison and
the grand finale, a 100 lap Madison with three sprints that included double
points on the final sprint. It is the only event of the year when the racer’s
get to select their own partners.
The first lead of the night went to Team Red of Randy Aardama and Gary Ryan, as
Ryan won a head to head contest with Sink in the final lap of the 1 mile sprint.
Ryan was leading it out as Sink sat, not in his slipstream, but by his side as
an extended effort to go over the Aussie. Sink was given a warning for going
below the red line and interfering in Ryan’s pole position.
Team Red’s lead lasted only through the end of the miss & out, ridden and won by
Team Neon’s Koesel. Going into the first 50 lap Madison, the pair had the lead
they held onto all night. Going into the final 100 lap Madison, they were eight
points ahead of their closest challengers - Team Purple. In the process of
battling it out, the two teams managed to lap the entire filed at least once and
twice for some. On points, NEON had a comfortable 16 point lead going into the
final sprint . By the time the sunset on the 1/8 th of mile wooden oval, Koesel
and Sink had won their 3 rd Championship title in spite of a tactical goof up
that had them completing an exchange during the final lap of the final race, an
infraction that carries a relegation penalty. Though enforced, it did not
change the outcome because Team Neon only had to pick up second place points to
hang onto its lead, a done deal since only Neon and Purple were on the same
mileage.
“The intensity and pace set by Team Neon and Team Purple
put incredible pressure on the rest of the teams.” said NAS-TRACK Chairman Dale
Hughes.
Nevertheless, for the final sprint Team Neon raced like they had to win the
sprint to win the race. Coming in late in the handoff, Team Neon tried to catch
Team Purple however they couldn’t and the U.S. Coast Guard Captain won the final
contest. It wasn’t enough to win the night but the crowd was collectively out of
their seats to get closer to the incredible race action.
“The four best NAS-TRACK riders proved it on the track – the crowd loved the
effort and action of Ronnie Sink, Dave Koesel, Steve Mlyujeak and Tony Bruley”
added Hughes.
NAS-TRACK Warnings/Penalty:
1. Team Neon Ronnie Sink received warning for interfering with rider in pole
lane during 1 Mile Sprint.
2. Team Purple Tony Bruley received warning for unnecessary contact during the
Madison.
3. Team Neon Ronnie Sink received penalty for unnecessary contact, 2nd offense
– loss of 10pts in NAS-TRACK SEASON STANDINGS.
In the AA division of NAS-TRACK, powerhouse road racer Ryan Cross earned a “AA”
championship title on the track with his Team Neon partner, Ken Starling. The
pair sat behind race leaders Team Black of Dean Martone and Vince Dejong most of
the evening, but when it came time for the final sprint, Cross was out of his
saddle and over the top to cross the line first. Team Gold’s Manderfield and
Cliff-Ryan made a terrific effort to lap the field and almost dropped Team Neon
but just before the final sprint Team Neon caught back to the pack and made the
perfect set-up for the final sprint. Going into the final sprint three teams
could win the Championships by winning the final sprint – Team Black, Team Gold
and Team Neon. Team Neon won the final sprint and the Championships.
Race action continues this Friday, August 5 th at 7 p.m. at the Velodrome at
Bloomer Park at the end of John R in Rochester Hills. On the venue, Future
Champions and a race format that combines an “A” racer with a “AA”. For further
