July Coffee Talk

This month’s topic will be Biking and advocating for Bicycle facilities in Metro
Detroit. Many of us own and ride our bikes both in the city and in the suburbs
and have found that the city and the entire area often do not have adequate
facilities for bikers to use. Usually cyclists are forced to share major roads
with high traffic and speeds in order to get anywhere. Currently there are a
number of initiatives underway such as the Greenways project and other proposals
by MDOT to create more facilities for cyclists including bike lanes and trails.
However this is just the tip of the iceberg and there is certainly significant
opportunity as we rebuild infrastructure in southeast Michigan to create an area
that encourages biking and other non-motorized transportation options. The
Governor’s push for Michigan to have “Cool Cities” also sets the stage for this
discussion as it is wide consensus that many young talented people are looking
to locate to areas with excellent outdoor recreational facilities and biking is
a big part of that picture. So Join us on Wednesday July 28th at 6:30pm at Café
de Troit in Downtown Detroit (1260 Library St.) to discuss this issue more and
to possibly form the core of a new organization that will be able to engage
planners and government to get more facilities built. We will have a number of
people joining us who are familiar with the work going on in this area that will
be able to share their knowledge with us.
