All,
For those of you who have been long time cyclists will remember the Golden
Years of track racing in the Detroit area. Having a reigning National
Champion was a common occurrence as the Wolverine Sports Club under the
coaching of Mike Walden produced 300 National Champions (Gold, Silver, or
Bronze). Winning the World Track Championships happened 10 times! In 1973,
1974, and 1975 the final race for the World's rainbow jersey was between
Shelia Young and Sue Novara; both Wolverines. That unbelievable run is
going to be hard to beat.
Mike is gone now, but the banner has been picked up by his daughter
Christine and her husband Dale Hughes. With the new Velodrome at Bloomer
Park in place, an excellent coaching staff, and young, enthusiastic, and
hungry juniors it was only a matter of time before it all started up again.
Sixteen year-old Wolverine Luke Cavender is currently at Junior Nationals
and is our first Junior National-Level track rider produced by the new
velodrome. He is currently out in California at Junior Nationals and his
race results are posted at the link below:

Luke's email is: cav2577@... if you want to give him a note of
encouragement!
Remember, Frankie Andreu started his racing career on the Dorais Velodrome
in Detroit when he was 8 years old and only switched to road racing after
the old track fell into disrepair.
For those of you who have not seen our new velodrome, this Friday at 7:00
PM will be the second NAS-TRACK Madison race. Teams of two battle for
points all night long and do hand slings at 30 mph. There will be a live
commentator, sunny skies, the Pit Crew band, and the most exciting racing
that you can witness!
Luke will be racing in NAS-TRACK race #3 on July 9.
For those of you who can not get to Rochester Hills on a Friday night,
NAS-TRACK's first race from last Friday will be shown on WTVS Channel 56
this Saturday at 11:00 PM.
