I caught a piece this evening on NPR's All Things Considered. It's about
bicycle moto-cross being included in the summer olympics. You'd think that
media exposure for bicycling would be a good thing. Unfortunately, about three
minutes into the piece, Bob Tedesco, the managing director of the National
Bicycle League explains the appeal of BMX racing as follows, "...there are
thousands and thousands of kids around the world doing this, as opposed to a few
people running around on a velodrome". This is the premise on which he got
backing from NBC, who, in turn, has sway over the Olympic Committee.
