Oh where oh where could my trainer be...I left it in the truck at
Sea Otter, just too much to lug up the hill. It has a sticker
with "Liz" on it.

I miss it.

Think speedy, climby thoughts for the ladies at the Gila tomorrow (Sunday). They
all place well in the crit today, finishing with the pack and are in a tight
race for 3rd place in the overall team GC with Ford-Basis and Colavita.
Tomorrow is the Gila Monster and from the description on the website, it sounds
tough (hence the 'Monster' I suppose.....).

Day 4 is the downtown crit. Normally fast, and a bit dodgy.
Last year Felicia crashed along with Lynn Gaggioli, so everyone was a bit
unsure of what to expect.

Well, with the GC so close with Geanvieve and Kim, we were sure somthing
was going to happen. Did not think Geanvieve or Lynn would make any
attempts to break with Ina watching in the field.

We somehow believed at some point Ina would do her regular and drop the
field.
After one lap Anna Millacowski attacked and rode off the front for about 6
laps. Somewhere around the 5th lap (i was at the top of the hill and Rene
down near the finish in the flats) an attack came, it was actually not a
very fast attack and many people could have tacked on easy. But Ina,
Geanvieve, and none of the other Tmobiles even flinched. The group did
not contain any GC concern. We had told Jill to sit in behind Ina and be
prepared for her to go and try to follow. After a few laps and a growing
break, we realized that Tmobile was not going to do anthing about this
group of 6 off the front. The break had Cat Malone of webcor, Molly from
Tokyo Joes, and a few other random riders.

About half way through the race, Rene gave Jill the ok to go. As she
rounded the corner into the climb Jill went off with a great effort and no
one could stay on her wheel, but on the descent Bettina from Webcor
encited a chase. They obvisously did not want Velo Bella getting into the
break. This was the fastest lap of the race and the break lost over 30
seconds. Then Jill was reeled back in. 2 laps later a rider from
Colovita
attacked, and in hind site we should maybe have had Jill try to get in
with her. That rider rode solo and almost caught the break. With about 8
laps to go the Peloton got slowed down drastically when a dog walked out
on the course and they had to slow down on the descent. This gave the
break an additional 30 seconds.

No one did anything at this point, so we had the ladies remain in the
field tucked in and conserve for tomorrows big day.

Cat Malone played it smart in the break and sat on the back. On the last
downhill corner she attacked and got away to win the stage.

All the Bellas came in about a minute later all together within the
peloton group sprint finish.
We suspect that the team moved down in the team GC standings.

Also Nancy Farazan and new Bella Amber did well in the Cat 3 race.
Nancy got 2nd today in the Crit and Amber got 3rd.
Amber got 2nd yesterday.

Hi Bellas,

Here is a little report.

Day 1

Got up in the dark and forced Josh to drive me to the
airport. He went home (still dark) and went back to
sleep. I slept on the airplane.
Arrived in the land of the pointed shoes and after
clearing customs enjoyed a few hours in the breeze
outside the El Paso airport. Within a minute of Jane
walking out the door her boyfriend showed up and drove
us to his bike shop where we assemble out bikes and
went for a spin.

Day 2

Crossed the border into New Mexico and made it to the
TT with plenty of time to spare. Cat Malone warned me
of vicious cross winds near a railroad bridge. I
thank her for that, if I didn't know I might not be
typing this today. Charging down the hill in my 11t
in the aero bars and being hit by that cross wind
might have blown me into Old Mexico. Ms Jeason
floated past me a few minutes into the race, we
started in alphabetical order so she wasn't too far
behind. It was still a bit demoralizing to get passed
so soon by someone moving so effortlessly. On the
three mile descent to the finish I was spinning the
11t as hard as possible and was passed by a woman who
was not even pedaling. Puzzling, yet true, how did
she do it?

Day 3
The dreaded Mogollon. The race wasn't as bad as I
thought it would be. Aside from pulling a Lance
(dragging brake pad for at least 58 miles) things went
ok. I kept going backwards on some of the big ring
rollers and was able to catch back on on the downhill
or flat areas. One too many rollers however popped me
for good and it was then that I noticed my from brake
rubbing the rim. After opening up the brake things
got better. While going up the climb (quite steep and
windy) I was able to make up some places.

Shout out to Jane who not only was brave enough to
move around in the peloton but had some legs left for
the climb. Jen was great telling everyone what to do,
Jill pulled like a locomotive to help bring the break
back and Gabby as always rode in her classy style to a
strong finish. The race also had the added bonus of
three pee breaks. One of which was caused by the
Official stopping us on a descent to reprimand the
peloton for crossing the center line too often. That
stop was scary, I saw a truck parked across the road
as we whistled along at about 35mph. There was a bit
of skiddin' and then we were stopped with an official
lady walking around yelling at us. Another bonus, we
got mentioned on cyclingnews.com with our name spelled
correctly.

Day 4
Another fantastic day of racing. The weather has been
quite condusive to racing with cool temperatures and
very little wind (as compared to last year, it seemed
windy to me). The peloton has been slowly thinning
out, we lost one woman to a broken collarbone on a
cattle grate in the first two minutes of the race. A
few miles later was the blistering fast feed zone
hill. We were going so fast up the hill that I
couldn't even check my speed for fear of getting
gapped. The descent was equally fun with high speeds
and hairpin turns. Somewhere on the climb in sheer
terror of getting dropped I rode right past Gabby
while she was having a leg mechanical. At the bottom
of the descent I was called back to bring her back to
the group. hard work! A bit later I was called to
the caravan a second time for water bottles. I got
two bottles and pulled Jane and her bottles back to
the group. No one wanted my second bottle and I
couldn't bear to see the effort wasted so a full
bottle rode my belly for an hour or so. I then
switched it with my empty but didn't want to toss it
on the side of the road and get fined for littering.
I finally flung the bottle at some parked cars in
hopes that they picked it up as a souvenier.

The race got really fun as we got close to the finish
with attack after attack keeping the speed high. It
seemed like the final sprint started a mile out but
really picked up at the end. This was the first large
group sprint that I have actuallyl enjoyed. It was
like a zombie sprint with moans and grunts emanating
from the dead limbed riders. I don't know if people
were giving up or were spent but Jen and I rode past
several people withing sight of the finish. All
Bella's finished with the group and we are now in 3rd
in the team competition!!! Three plates of Mexican
food later I am ready to chill and prepare for
tomorrow's crit.

hasta mañana

Barb

Hey Monterey bellas

If anyone is around at Wildflower give kathleen an email. She's just the
neatest person. Dawn and I met her during our wonderful trip to Canmore.
Looks like she's looking for company to ride, or even to just say hello.

Hey Sabine,

I met you in Canmore last summer. Hope all is well with velobella world.

I will be at the Wildflower Tri on Thurs to Sunday this week.

I am not racing but supporting two guys who are.

Are you around? I will have my road bike if you want to hook up for some
road rides.

Ciao for now,

Kathy

P.S. I would like to buy a XS jersey if there will be some at the race.

It gets better folks!
Velo Bella is now #3 team in GC. Woot WOot!

1- Tmobile
2- Webcor
3- Velo Bella
4- Colavita
5- Ford
6- Tokyo Joes
7- Tamarac

On top of that.. I miss counted Jills result as I forgot Ina and another
rider had the break away at the finish.
Jill took 12th(official)
Jane 30th (official)
Gabby 16th (un-official)
Barb 21st (un-official)
Jen 22nd (un-official)

I only caught a glance, but it looked like Gabby has moved up from 20th to
18th in GC and Jill jumped up at least a spot.

This race starts with a early sprint worth 30 seconds..

Then straight into the mountains through a little town call Pinos altos
   after a short grueling climb.
Today we had Janes family volunteering for the feedzones for the Bellas,
so I got to ride along with Rene.

About 18 miles in Geanvieve Jeanson moved to the front and started pushing
the pace right through the feedzone and a little disconnect happened where
Jen and Barb rode by Gabby without even knowing. Gabby's radio failed so
she could not call for help. Rene and I were too far back behind the
dropped riders to see what happened and came across Gabby chasing by
   herself.
Gabby dug deep and rode for a long time chasing through the mountain range
until she came across 3 Ford riders who were pulling their GC rider back
to the peloton. Barb dropped back, almost missed Gabby and Ford gals..
but got in and helped Gabby back in. The gals kept cruising through the
flats in the backside of the valley. At the start of the Valley Cat
Malone and Anna Millacowski broke away for about 20 miles.
Then as planned Jill took a chance and soloed away from the front of the
pack and got about a 40 second break and turned into the headwind headed
toward the last feedzone and 2 mile climb. We could see that Tmobile and
Geanvieve had decided to make this the moment to go, so we told Jill to
soft pedal and get back in.

Then a break of about 14 got away and the Bellas were not in it. This
   contained Tmobile, Colavita, and Geanvieve.
All 5 Bellas were in the chase group and they chased over 2 more climbs
and caught back on. Now the group was about 30 deep. This continued over a
few more climbs, and then Ina attacked with about 7 miles to go followed
by a rider from Lipton team. The remainder of the race the 5 Bellas
remained together sheltered in the pack. The sprint started at the fateful
cattle guard from the start of the race where Geanvieve, Lynn, and a few
others took off with a long way to go. the 3 J's and G&B came in the
sprint. Jill possibly breaking top 10 and the rest with very good results.
   Ina won today once again.

It was incredibly impressive how the gals worked together and finished
this race together. A few minor mishaps but stuff that can be worked out.

Jane Zigs comment of the day. "It was the most intense riding I have ever
   done, PERIOD".

Barbs comment.." I cannot believe how fast we went up that feedzone
hill"(regarding the first feedzone over the continental divide.) "and that
downhill was FUN!" (regarding the treacherous downhill down the back of
   the Gila monster).

Tomorrow is Crit day at 2PM.

   Ciao,
   Brent

My stars! If Barbarella can't believe how fast they went up a hill, then it
really must have been pure pain. How exciting. My adrenaline is pumped just
reading it.

Great job ladies!

I forgot to mention the dates:
The World Cup is May 28th (saturday), followed by a stage race, The Tour du
Grand Montreal, from May 30th to June 2nd.

here is the website: http://www.world-cup-cycling.org/world-cup/index-wc.htm
you can find a link to the Tour du Grand Montreal in the left hand column.

Funny, if you read the first paragraph it says:
Following threats of public stoning during his last ride, President Daniel
Manibal decided to reduce the difficulty level of the Cyclo du Tour.

are they for real??

   Hi Ladies,
VeloBella is sending a team to compete at the World Cup in Montreal at the end
of May. It is required that each team has 3 support people. We are fortunate
to have the help of Brent and Rene, but are still in search of a third person.
If any of you know of someone who could help please email me and let me know.
Also, if you have any connections to a bike shop, that would be helpful as well
-- they might have some ideas of local people who might be willing to help us
out.

I know it is a bit of a long shot, but worth a try.

   Thanks!!

while we wait. I suspect it should arrive in about two weeks.

Also, ALL of the extras we ordered have been spoken for. We might have
extras after we sort out the order and there are others who have not
paid. If that happens, I will announce any extras available to the
list.

Team Estrogen has ordered shorts, jerseys and long sleeve jerseys.
Their order is expected to arrive at the same time as ours and they
are taking back orders for the upcoming arrival.

We will be placing another clothing order in May/June for a July
delivery (Off season has faster clothing turnaround time).
