The Fort Ord Reuse Authority ("FORA") is doing environmental cleanup
work near the East Campus housing area south of Inter-Garrison Road,
part of a 3,340 acre clean-up project. The work involves removing old
Army munitions/explosives, and is being done to protect public safety.
As of May 8th, FORA officially owns the ESCA properties.
Safety Access Corridors have been established through the ESCA parcels
and signs are being posted to help guide you safely to the Bureau of
Land Management (BLM) recreational areas. For your safety, stay on the
roads, respect work area signage, and maintain posted speed limits to
prevent accidental contact with workers and equipment.
Field crews are currently working south of Gigling Road, west of Watkins
Gate, north of Hay Rake Road and east of 8th Avenue. Crews are
conducting a surface investigation for Munitions and Explosives of
Concern (MEC).
Field crews have also removed vegetation on a 17-acre area south of
Inter-Garrison Road and east of 8th Avenue to confirm the quality of
previous munitions/explosives cleanup work. Field crews will be
continuing quality assurance activities in this area.
For those who are interested, FORA will be hosting a Community Workshop
Tuesday, June 9th from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. at the FORA Bridge Center. The
ESCA Remediation Program Team will present more detailed information
about field work that is occurring on the ESCA properties; particularly
in the CSUMB Off-Campus and County North areas.
For regular updates on field work, schedules and access corridors,
please call the FORA ESCA Remediation Program Hotline at (831) 883-3506.
