Hi there,
I think you need to start by learning more about vegan nutrition
in general. Beans are a great source of plant-based protein but there
are many others. I get around 100-150 grams a day and I don't eat
beans very often at all, though I do eat some bean products (soy).
Your first step should be to search google for the "vegan food guide
pyramid". Following this everyday will ensure that you are getting
all the vitamins and minerals you need on a daily basis, but you will
have to tweak it to your caloric needs. There is an overwhelming
amount of information on vegan nutrition and health online, all you
have to do is search! Use the internet as your personal library. I'm
sure you'll find great and easy (not to mention tasty) ways to meet
your daily protein needs in no time. Being vegan and getting your
protein doesn't have to be as dull or as monotonous as eating beans
all the time! Promise, *wink*

Hello all,
I am a new vegan. How do I ensure that I am eating enough beans for adequate
protein, so that I don't lose muscle (lean) tissue and get adequate protein for
my health? I do not eat soya beans (allergy), but I eat a varietyof other
beans. I weigh 130 pounds. What quantity of beans do I eat daily?

   Grateful for your responses.

Just to throw a few more thoughts out on this..

How *much* cardio = less muscle-size gain?

Would rowing for 30mins four times a week result in mass-loss? How about
the eliptical or cycling?

Does *all* cardio = less muscle-size gain?

I can see how something high-impact like running would result in less mass,
as your body would work to have less 'stuff' bouncing around...so to speak.
(ie, you'd lean up in certain areas, to keep it tight and efficient for that
activity.)

But would other low/no-impact excercises like rowing and cycling and the
eliptical trainer really result in very much muscle loss, if done at a
fairly 'human' level? (ie, not spending 12+hrs a week on the bike like me.
;)

*What* exactly in cardio causes muscle-size loss?

Is it what i suggested, with the high-impact stuff? How about calorie
consumption? If you're burning extra calories, perhaps they're not really
getting into the muscle...maybe then eating a bit more to compensate for
that extra activity would allow for the 'best of both worlds'?

I dunno if any of this makes sense, i'm mostly just talking out of my ass.
=)

I personally feel cardio training is very important for overall health,
hopefully it can fit into a muscle-building routine!

- Dave

OK we're nearing a time of eating & drinking (binging & boozing maybe a
better description), so how are we going to get through it?

First we've got to plan ahead some.

There will be some drinking, bad eating & making merry, don't discount
yourself from everything for your training. Also there might be less time
to train than usual.

Sit down now, get a pen what are the events you are going to, how do these
clash with your training? Think out a rational training plan for the next
few weeks. If you're tight for time, think of doing a abbreviated training
routine, if times really tight squats, shoulder press & curl will work for a
workout for a week or two. Couple of sets of each done hard can do wonders
for you :-).

Eating. Ok this is a tough one, you want to enjoy your holidays, but just
don't go overboard, think "Portion size", eat what you like over the holiday
at your special meals etc, but don't fill the plate, use moderation. Other
times, do not try to balance the books by going on starvation eating, just
eat your usual good healthy food. Drinking's the same, moderate, drink one
alcoholic then one or two soft drinks, drink slowly & don't end up doing any
tequila wars with your friends :-).
If you need extra time to recover from the holidays cut your workouts (say
go to 2 a week from 3).
If you can get a plan for the holidays in place now, you'll be more likely
to survive them intact, than entering '06 looking fat & feeling rubbish.
Above all allow yourself some fun-time & enjoy the time you get with your
family & friends!

Anyone else have any ideas for enjoy the break without the pitfalls?

The soya "myth" is old news. I'll run through the claims about soya & the
answers:

Q Soya protein isolate (SPI) isn't a complete protein
A SPI has been shown to prove every amino acid in the quantities the body needs.
It has been shown to be a complete protein & can be totally utilised by the
(human) body. Early research was done on rats. As rats need a different amino
acid profile (a different balance of amino acids than those found in SPI) it was
found to be an incomplete FOR RATS. Hence the old misinformation.

Q SPI doesn't make you grow as fast as WPI (Whey Protein Isolate)
A Again this is not true in head to head trials SPI equalled the growth
potential of WPI

Q SPI lowers your testosterone
A True! When you ingest any protein a complex series of metabolic changes
occurs. One of these is that for a brief time testosterone lowers before
climbing, so ANY protein will lower your testosterone levels.

Q SPI increases your oestrogen levels
A Again True! But in head to head against WPI, SPI heightened oestrogen less
than WPI. Any protein intake heightens oestrogen, but it is raised less by SPI,
that is why SPI is more often thought of by scientists as an anti-oestrogen
product as it appears to partly-inhibit oestrogen rise that often occurs with
protein ingestion.
There has been cases of rats being poisoned by phyto-estrogens from soya. You
can get an increase in oestrogen by isolating the phyto-estrogens in soya &
force-feeding them to animals, in real life this doesn't occur.
Phyto-estrogens are natural plant products that look to the body a little like
the hormone oestrogen, they react about 5,000 times less than oestrogen itself.
It has been said that they could act as oestrogen blockers, fitting into the
receptors designed for oestrogen, but not functioning, so can actually be
oestrogen blockers.
Just about ALL plants have phyto-estrogens in them to some extent.

Q SPI feminises
A See the above answer. If they say it's the phyto-estrogen, then think about
this. SPI contains a small amount of of a chemical that works 5,000 times more
weakly than oestrogen & could well act as a blocker to these substances. WPI
comes from the milk of a lactating mother. Here blood is full of female
hormones (& milk is a blood product), therefore WPI is packet with mammalian
oestrogen (not the weak plant version), which do you think would be more
feminising?

Finally whey is actually the junk product. SPI was originally formulated to be
a protein for babies from the outset, whey is just the junk from the cheese
making process. Whey is just a cheap source of protein for the masses, SPI was
created to be a complete amino acid product for those babies that couldn't take
the breast (for one reason or another). Scientists actually went out & found
the best amino acid profile in a food in their journey to create SPI, whey was
just there & was cheap to make into a powder.

The above being said. I do not think soya is any sort of miracle food. You'd
get about the same growth effect form the same amount of other proteins. It's
just soya is the cheap protein of the moment for most vegans. I use it, but I
also use pea protein (& others when I can get hold of them). I try to vary my
protein intake taking in good amounts from each of the three sides of the Vegan
Protein Pyramid (legumes, cereals & nuts/seeds). Also special foods like
spiralina & other algae's can play a part in your protein intake, as can seaweed
(which is surprisingly high in protein if you're ok about the salt-good way for
you low blood pressure crew to up your pressure & your protein all at once).
Most of the original research has been mentioned on the list before, so
searching the archives for a bit will give you all the references you need.

Hope that's answered some of your questions, any others let us know.

   Deanna,

I am the only vegan in a strength training class held at my workplace after
hours. The trainer has cautioned us that too much cardio can cause us to lose
muscle that many of us are trying to build. I have not read much on the issue
and am curious what others may have heard.

Deanna, if your goal is to build muscle and the above ends up being correct,
it might make your goal more challenging.

BTW, It is pretty lonely as the only vegan who is being told that soy protein
isolate is "junk" and that I should start using whey to "feed the muscle, burn
the fat."

If your goal is to gain size cardio works against that (as a rule). I do
recommend everyone does some cardio at points throughout the year. I have
tried cutting out all cardio (except warm ups at the start of training from
5 or so minutes) & this has aided my quest for size. Giving up cardio for
say 3 months, then including it (in moderation) come spring could be an
experiment worth trying out. Just use it for warm ups before you train.
Don't think of dumping cardio on a permanent basis, but think of the winter
as the time to focus on size gains, then come spring you can add in the
cardio again & cut any gained fat to reveal the newly built muscle.
Saying that I don't believe you should give up cardio at all if you are over
40 (unless you REALLY know what you're doing), as it's twice as hard to
shift any built up fat after that time.
The "secret" to gaining muscular weight is easy to spell out, just hard to
do. Eat slightly more than you need to maintain your weight, train in a
heavy progressive manner. Do those two thinks for a while & you HAVE to
grow, simple as that. If you don't take steroids train 3 (or at most) 4
times a week for a maximum of about 1 hour, finish each training session
with a protein shake, rest between training sessions, eat every few hours &
drink plenty of water.
Keep this up until summer '06 & we'll all be seeing a bigger you come the
warm weather.

One note, it's VERY hard to lose fat & gain muscle. Most people have to
choose what they prefer, then go with that. So, you'd have a growing phase,
then a cutting phase.

Not so much a resolution, as they never appear to stick, but I'd like to
spend more time at the gym and lose another
5 percent body fat (I think I'm at 18 now). I would also like to do more
core strengthening through yoga and become
   much more flexible.

The problem I have is that I am very small, a size zero, and I am unsure
of
how much cardio to do given that I am trying to
gain weight and not lose it. Right now I run for 10 minutes 3 times a week
on the treadmill. I'm 115 pounds right now, which is
deceptively more than what I look to weigh.

Oh and my other resolution is to make my meat-eating friends do the dinner
compromise and not always me. So I
expect many more visits to vegan restauraunts are in order. I'd also like
to
   learn how to cook.

Deanna,

I am the only vegan in a strength training class held at my workplace after
hours. The trainer has cautioned us that too much cardio can cause us to lose
muscle that many of us are trying to build. I have not read much on the issue
and am curious what others may have heard.

Deanna, if your goal is to build muscle and the above ends up being correct, it
might make your goal more challenging.

BTW, It is pretty lonely as the only vegan who is being told that soy protein
isolate is "junk" and that I should start using whey to "feed the muscle, burn
the fat."

Greetings...

I have been looking for a natural vitamin supplement and was looking
at trying spirulina. I have been hearing/reading various comments
about it with one group claiming it's a superfood and the other saying
something quite the opposite.

Can anyone poin me in the direction of a reliable source for obtaining
the correct information on spirualina?

Thanks...

   Hi Deanna,
As this hasn't been mentioned on the list for a bit I go through it for
all
the new people. On the VBB site there's a section for every training
vegan
where we can put up pictures of ourselves
http://www.veganbodybuilding.org/workinprogress.htm where we can all set
our
goals, put up bits about our diet, training & a few pictures. I class
the
page as yours & the person involved has final say about how it looks etc.
To become involved you just need to send me a few pictures (training,
posing, in contest etc), along with a bit about your training, diet, goals
&
anything else you think has played a part in you reaching your goals. You
need to be vegan & doing some form of training, but you don't need to be a
bodybuilder or powerlifters, just losing a few pounds or adding some
muscles
for the beach can be equally as valid a goal.
Anyone interested should e-mail stuff to me at pete@...
You have missed your chance at the 2005 contest, but this is an ongoing
event, so the 2006 WIP of the Year is just starting up now, with the final
decision around December 2006 (we'll Probably announce the '06 winners at
next years Animal Aid Xmas Without Cruelty as we've been invited back next
   year already!).
It would be great if we could expand the contest over 2006 & really get
some
   interest going in the outcome!

   All the best,

   Pete www.veganbodybuilding.org

       Hi all,
I'll be doing a bit on the VBB site about the Xmas Without Cruelty
   fayre,
but we had Santa, a talk, the press-up contest & the WIP of the year
results. It was a fun-packed day & we were kept very busy!
The press-up contest was fab with 3 women & 13 men. Everyone was
   fabulous
     &
did really well. The winners were Matt Woodman & Julie (sorry I
didn't
     get
your last name!), Matt did 72 reps & Julie got 50, both impressive
     amounts!
The WIP of the year was hard both the men & women all did really well,
   but
in the end we had to go with Crystal Hammer from the US & Joni (of
vegan
fitness fame) from the UK. You can see Crystal's WIP at
       http://www.veganbodybuilding.org/crystal.htm ,
       http://www.veganbodybuilding.org/crystal2.htm &
       http://www.veganbodybuilding.org/crystal3.htm )have a look & it's
   obvious
why she won! Joni's update was such a late entry I've yet to get it up
   on
the site! He does have a training log on Vegan Fitness & his old WIP
     pages
can be found at http://www.veganbodybuilding.org/jp.htm . He set
goals,
worked hard & improved immensely this year & really pipped everyone
else
     to
the post, I think everyone else agreed that he's was a worthy winner!
Well done to both of you.
The pictures of the day will be up on the site over the next few days
     (there
are a lot of pictures for this one!). I think Animal Aid will also be
     using
some of the pictures of our day in their next magazine as they really
     liked
       our contribution!
Thanks to everyone who took part & helped make the day a success!
We're already planning for next year, so you can expect more fun &
     contests
       next year (get training!)

       All the best,

       Pete www.veganbodybuilding.org

     Hi all,
I'll be doing a bit on the VBB site about the Xmas Without Cruelty
fayre,
but we had Santa, a talk, the press-up contest & the WIP of the year
results. It was a fun-packed day & we were kept very busy!
The press-up contest was fab with 3 women & 13 men. Everyone was
fabulous
   &
did really well. The winners were Matt Woodman & Julie (sorry I didn't
   get
your last name!), Matt did 72 reps & Julie got 50, both impressive
   amounts!
The WIP of the year was hard both the men & women all did really well,
but
in the end we had to go with Crystal Hammer from the US & Joni (of vegan
fitness fame) from the UK. You can see Crystal's WIP at
     http://www.veganbodybuilding.org/crystal.htm ,
     http://www.veganbodybuilding.org/crystal2.htm &
     http://www.veganbodybuilding.org/crystal3.htm )have a look & it's
obvious
why she won! Joni's update was such a late entry I've yet to get it up
on
the site! He does have a training log on Vegan Fitness & his old WIP
   pages
can be found at http://www.veganbodybuilding.org/jp.htm . He set goals,
worked hard & improved immensely this year & really pipped everyone else
   to
the post, I think everyone else agreed that he's was a worthy winner!
Well done to both of you.
The pictures of the day will be up on the site over the next few days
   (there
are a lot of pictures for this one!). I think Animal Aid will also be
   using
some of the pictures of our day in their next magazine as they really
   liked
     our contribution!
Thanks to everyone who took part & helped make the day a success!
We're already planning for next year, so you can expect more fun &
   contests
     next year (get training!)

     All the best,

     Pete www.veganbodybuilding.org

Hi Pat, I'm pretty new here but read the list with interest. I'd love to get
involved in this contest.
Is there a chance? I'm in Canada and have been doing strength training for
about 1 year now.

Deanna

Oh and I forgot to say that Crystal looks amazing!!

Hi there,

Sorry, when you put these " " around the eight, I thought its not a
mistake, and thought you were there for eight hours training, thought there
was a explanation, and was just curious, silly me.

Hi Wayne!
Well 'work' at gym sees me mostly sitting down and providing
nutritional consultations - so it's not exactly 'labour' - in fact I
sometimes think I'm there for the rest - as it gives me a break from
round the clock patient work! I've long-since developed a teaching
method which involves me being enabled to 'talk' people through routines
and technique - since over the last several years there's rarely a
time when a part of me is not in compromised-function. Don't worry -
I'm resting up well - today, I actually managed to sit down for six of
the eight hours! - Now tomorrow is yet another matter - but still I'll
mostly be sitting with my patients! Thanks for concern, Pat.

2 Sides Of The Holidays

Well, it appears that we all got through our ThanXgivings, but even
before that "holiday" came around, the media was gearing us up for
the next event.

Xmas outshines them all, but there is Chanukkah, Kwanzaa and the
Winter Solstice.

No matter what side of the fence you are on about these upcoming
December "traditions," you can find what you are looking for at the
discussion lists below.

Already I have posted about shopping, recipes, history and politics
surrounding this time of the year.

If you would like all this information - and, more - come join us!

Either way, enjoy whatever it is you 'celebrate' or identify with.

Hi Everyone!
Expecting to leave here tomorrow - as now personally injecting into
implant and BP slowly returns to within accepted normal limits. Should
get two/three weeks of relative stability before I meed to return here.
Beyond that I know not. Love, Light and Peace, Pat.

Hi Everyone!
Above reveal the latest tumour, which carries the highest staging, has
confirmed this one is the most aggressive I've faced thus far. It has
grown massively over the last two weeks - though fortunately spread to
soft tissue surrounding clavicle. German medics feel they can insert
another loaded pellet - into which I will daily inject the same
malignotoxic compound, which was so successful for my liver and kidney.
Other testing procedures show certain gene expressions appear somewhat
modified via the treatment I am currently applying. This could buy me
more time. It is not possible to insert this into bone tissue directly
- but now it is hoped it can be used over the new growth area.
Unfortunately the compound has heart-compromising properties for me
after a few weeks - it's previous use has always been a
race-against-time event. Amputation of shoulder/arm may follow as a
last ditch attempt.
The good news is that I will return from Germany after next week's
visit - as I eek out a little more time before any next step. I had
made arrangements to move to German clinic for my remaining time had the
tumour's progression proved totally unstoppable. I am obviously
delighted to be enabled to return to UK soon.
I'll keep you all posted - with absolutely nothing to lose now I'm most
definitely up for this immediate challenge. So many prayers are being
recited for me on a daily basis, particularly so from USA power-lifting
Association - who coined the 'alive in 2005' earlier this year.
Presently the Almighty is absolutely on my side - and I feel truly
blessed for that - Love, Light and Peace, Pat.
