I'm a bit of a beginner when it comes to lacrosse. Can anyone
recommend a good website to look at to find the rules of the game?
Also, are there any smaller local leagues in Vancouver where people
play, maybe a team for beginners who would like to learn how to play?
Thanks!

The recent financial troubles of the Vancouver Ravens have little
to do with the quality of the entertainment the hard-working firemen,
school teachers, salesmen and postal workers provide in their
sideline as pro lacrosse players.
Their 2-4 start in their second year of National Lacrosse League play
has even less. The Ravens could be 4-0 and still be bailing in a
leaky rowboat on a similar sea of red ink.
A sports franchise investor has to be in it for the long haul, like a
mutual-fund buyer. If losing $1 million is an imposition, the
investor should have been in term deposits or something else. And it
really doesn't matter if you're talking Vancouver Canucks or Surrey
Eagles. The only difference is the number of zeroes.
Likely the only sports franchises around here in the black are the
WHL Vancouver Giants and B.C. Hockey League Coquitlam Express.
Even though the Canucks are setting attendance records and have added
three luxury boxes, there's no long lineup to become partners with
owner John McCaw because the team's still losing money.
Every professional team in town has had its own monetary problems the
last few years.
The Vancouver Whitecaps A-League soccer team was a Greg Kerfoot
cheque away from being out of business just a few months ago; since
Hamilton businessman David Braley bailed the Canadian Football League
team out from under Nelson Skalbania, the B.C. Lions have been lucky
to have him paying their bills without complaint going on six
seasons.
Braley has always maintained he is caretaker of the Lions, but it
wasn't until he hired Bob Ackles as president and Wally Buono as
general manager and coach that the fans began to feel the team was
really going to try and make the connection and become part of the
community again.
It really doesn't matter what David Stadnyk (Whitecaps) or Paul
Reinhart (Ravens) were thinking when they got involved as sports team
owners.
Perhaps their intentions were honourable and perhaps they thought
they could make a quick profit. The bottom line is they weren't in
the business long enough for validation to the constituents they have
to attract.
If nothing else, Tom Mayenknecht, who was returned as owner by the
NLL, has the sweat equity invested in the Ravens. He has the vision
the team needs to be involved in the community they represent.
There has been more written and spoken about the Ravens the last
three days than the previous two months.
Given that the Canucks and hockey are on a level of their own -- and
the Canucks have been leaders in the community, too -- the rest of
the pack has to work that much harder to find and then nurture their
niche in the market.
The more the team can afford to spend on getting connected with the
community the better.
If Mayenknecht is luckier picking his partners this time it could be
said the sports ownership picture is better than it has been for
years.
"This is a long-term venture," said the positive Mayenknecht. "Where
there can be value is in the growth of the asset. I believe there are
niches for secondary sports."
Look for the slogan, "Real guys; unreal athletes" to be resurrected.
Mailmen scoring on behind-the-back bounce shots ... It doesn't get
any closer to the community than that.

Great game, Ravens started off a bit slow but fought hard to win the
first game. Some good goals by the new man Stroup helped Vancouver
keep the lead.
Don't forget to cash in your ticket stubs for spaghetti.
Merry Christmas fellow lacrosse and Ravens fans.
I hope everyone is as excited as I am about the start of the second
season of Ravens lacrosse here in Vancouver. There was a free
scrimage at GM Place earlier in December and it sure was exciting.
As you know our first game is next Friday, January 3rd, 2003. Our
season homeopener is against the Philadelphia Wings @ 7PM @ GM
Place. I have tickets that are being sold as part of a fundraiser
for a U13 field lacrosse team. The tickets are in Raven Black,
Section 110, Rows 20-24 and are only $20 including all taxes and
service charges.
Great lacrosse action, great price, and for a great team.
If anyone is interested, we have tickets to the Jan 12 game vs.
Rochester and Feb 14th vs. Toronto Rock as well. Feel free to email
me at lcgadd@...
Go Ravens Go !!!
Our Vancouver Ravens will appear on Sportsnet (Channel 22) 8 times..
Calgary Roughnecks also 8 times..However, if you happen to be an
an Ottawa Rebel fan you give 6 times..
Not to shabby considering its just year 2 for the Ravens..
Wow I've never been to any sporting event where
the scoring in one half of the game was so completely
different from the other half. During half-time the team
musta had one hell of a talking to, because an offense
that was pretty much non existent in the game all of a
sudden became a force. I mean really, 11-1 scoring in
one quarter? Don't know what happened in the dressing
room but the Ravens sure put on a good show in the
last two quarters. Awesome turnaround.
~A~
Jan 3 - RAVENS GAME TIME CHANGES (UPDATED)
The
Vancouver Ravens have officially changed the start times
for two upcoming home games and one away game.

The game on Saturday, February 16th against the New
York Saints has been changed to a 12:30pm start time.

The game on Saturday, March 16th against the Calgary
Roughnecks has been changed to a 7:30pm start time.

Both of these games are at General Motors place.

The third time change is the final regular season
game, which is now an hour earlier, 11:30am at Calgary
against the Roughnecks.

All times are Pacific
Standard Time and are on the schedule page of the Ravens'
website.

The time changes were made to accommodate
television broadcasts of all three games on Sportsnet, the
League’s national television partner in Canada.
Wow, the Ravens got on a bit of a goal scoring
run and kinda made New Jersey look weak. They shot
everything at the net for the first three quarters then just
rested in the fourth. With a 19-5 lead they gave Maetche
the last quarter off.
Not a bad game but the Storm
didn't look that good out there.
~A~
The Ravens fought back pretty good after a lousy
1st quarter, scored a nice 5 goal run in the 2nd. One
goal out of two penalty shots ain't too bad. The Wings
had some good defending and goaltending late in the
game too. Even though the Ravens lost it was a pretty
exciting game to watch. No fights this game though.
~A~
You guys most definitely did NOT get outshot by
Ottawa... by the Rock, yes, but not by the Rebel. Shooting
numbers from this weekend (note that shot pct is goals
scored divided by shots on goal):

SATURDAY, AT
TORONTO
Ravens: 66 shots, 46 on goal, 0.239 shot pct.
Rock: 86
shots, 64 on goal, 0.250 shot pct.

SUNDAY, AT
OTTAWA:
Ravens: 77 shots, 63 on goal, 0.159 shot pct.
Rebel:
67 shots, 47 on goal, 0.277 shot pct.

Matt
Disher or not, 0.159 is atrocious. Forget the QUANTITY
of shots -- the Ravens gotta improve the QUALITY of
their shots or they will lose week in, week out.

R.A.
We're getting a bit out-shot in the first couple
of games (Ravens 66 vs. Rock 86 ; & Ravens 77 vs.
Rebel 86) but hopefully when the team sees a good
hometown crowd they'll get a strong offensive game and
turn it into a win.
~A~
Well looks like Vancouver is waiting until they
see the hometown crowd before they take their first
win. They had quite a lot of shots on goal but
couldn't quite pull it off to get the win today.
~A~
