Just a quick email to fill you in on the last few days. We've had the most amazing time over the past week.
We finished our training now so we start real work next week. We've had almost a week off so been making the most of it. Done a fair bit of snowboarding and a little bit of partying :)
We were so lucky to get tickets to see The Cat Empire on Wed night. Most of you know i'm a big fan so you imagine my devistation when i found out thhat the concert had already sold out by the time we arrived in Whistler. What's the chances of Cat Empire coming to Whistler at the same time as us. I tried everthing to get tickets but no-one wanted to sell of course (lots of aussies here and it was a small concert in the local pub). It was the night before the concert and i'd given up hope when a guy that we met over here knocked on our door. He'd got 4 free tickets from a mate he went to highschool with who just happened to mention on facebook that he was in Whistler. Turns out he's also the back-up trumpet player for The Cat Empire. WHAT???? You can imagine my reaction... I was jumping laps of our appartment. Did that just actually happen?
Anyway... The Cat Empire were awesome as usual. Very different to a concert in Aus but still really cool. It was a fairly small concert in one of the cool local pubs. For the few of you who have been here, it was at the GLC (Garibaldi Lift Co). We hung around after the concert to thank Ross who gave us the tickets, very cool guy and awesome trumpet player, and he got a play list signed for me. Felix and Harry came out and chatted to all the girls, hehe, and signed stuff. They were happy to pose for a photo too. Yay.
We've had numerous snowball fights with all sorts of random people over the past few nights. Getting home from the pub has turned into a mission and very strategic. There's so much snow that no-one can help themselves. Lots of fun.
Last night we were on our way back to out appartment and out the front we have a big bearproof shed where the bins are kept. We heard this very angry snarling coming from the shed. Our first reaction was that there was a bear in there but the door was locked so it couldn't have got in there. we through a couple of snowballs from a safe distance to see if something ran out but we just made it more angry. There was obviously something stuck inside the shed, and we wanted to help, but there was no-way in hell we were gonna open that door. After listening for a bit we decided it was a cougar. Well... i decided it was a cougar. Chris decided that he would very quickly unlock the door and do a runner while i safely hid behind a wall in the distance. Sounded like a good idea. (There had been a little bit of drinking before this drama, by the way, so you can picture it :)) Anyway the plan ended in an anti-climax, as chris was sprinting across the car park toward the wall of safety, nothing. Now the door was wide open but it was really dark so we couldn't see in there. We could still hear it russeling around in the bin though. Now we had a new problem. It's a big no no to leave rubbish out in the open cause it attracts the bears. We now had to shut and lock the door. We finally got the shed locked, still having no idea what was in the bin. We just hoped that no-one put their rubbish out early in the moring and was greated by a cougar.
This morning, in the light, we went back out to try and find out what was stuck in our bin. We cautiously unlocked the door and slowly opened it. There was still no-way i was poking my head over the top of the bin. That thing sounded feirce. So i reached over with the camera and took a photo. See the first attached photo.
YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING...
Well, we rescued the big scary racoons from our rubbish bin. They were very grateful :)
You had to be there!
We've had some more great days of snow. The mountains are amazing as you can hopefully see from some of the photos. The view is unreal and we've only seen it from one lift so far.
As I will be turning 100 next year, it would be considered sensible to "retire" from UWA ski club presidency.
It would be fantastic is someone who still gets asked for ID at clubs could take over.
If you are a UWA student, or even a student in general then please consider nominating!
The up side is you get to take a boat out whenever you want, plus hot guys flirt with you more when you have power, take Margaret Thatcher for example.
We will help you learn the ropes and give you a hand with everything
Please let me know if you are interested in any role on the committee.. student, non student whoever..

It snowed so much here over the past few days, it's amazing. This is the biggest opening they've had in ages. There has been so much snow that the mountain opened 2 weeks early. There were 7,000 people on the mountain on opening day, saturday, and that's only with 4 lifts open (There are 36 lifts here).
Luckily our training is only on weekedays so we boarded sat and today, sunday. I started pretty rusty yesterday but i felt heaps better today. Really unfit though, hehe. The snow is amazing, heaps of powder so not as scary as it was in NZ when you fall. Chris has found himself in shoulder deap powder a couple of times, he's loving it :)
Our training is going well. So relaxed and nothing too difficult. We'll learn most things when we start, they're really just getting us familiar with the mountain and the company so we feel a bit more relaxed on our first day. We've just been doing little intro games and walking around looking at different parts of the mountain and looking at the different lifts. Some days have only been half days too so that's pretty good. Tomorrow we get the arvo to go boarding and i have all of tuesday off. Chris has wednesday off. We start work thursday.
I tried to include some before and after shots of different places so you can see what's happened over the past few days. It's been amazing to see the place with no snow then over the past few days it just dropped. This morning we woke up and there was 50cm of snow on the cars outside, the poor trees where completely packed with snow. That was in the village so you can imagine what the top was like. It was snowing like crazy up there all day. The lift was a bit uncomfortable. It was like being hit by hail. But i'm not complaining :)
We've met some really nice people already and have made some new friends. We've had a couple of fun nights out and started to learn about the different "places to be". There's always something to do which is good. (Grant: went to Merlins on fri night, there was heaps of staff there for $5 burgers and very cheap drinks, had an awesome time, haven't been able to try the nachos yet though, they don't officially open til late Nov :))
We're settling in really well and are very excited about the next 6 months. Hope everyone is going well. It's good to hear bout what everyone is up to. Sorry if i don't write back but it's really good to hear from you.
Luv Bec
PS. Photo 2 and 3 are of the walkway to our place from the village (before and after)
Photo 4 and 5 are of our building (before and after)
The last photo is of Chris and some other lifties walking to our training session at mid mountain
I'm planning to take the boat out at Deep water point on Wednesday afternoon (the 11th) at deep water point from about 3.30 until 7 or whenever the sun goes down in this crazy state that ought to adopt daylight savings!!!
Let me know your coming so if plans change or something goes pear shaped we can let you know.
Cheers,
Phil

We arrived in Whistler wednesday morning. So far everything has been awesome. We had a great time in sydney and caught up with chris's friend Simmo and my freind Claire. We had a great time on sat night at Claire's housmates wig party. There's a photo for your amusement :) We went to The opera bar outside the opera house, Manly on the ferry and bondi by train. We loved the atmosphere at Darling harbour. Now i understand why everyone say's perth is so expensive. The alcohol and food was really well priced.
We made it onto our flight to Vancouver with no dramas. Perth to sydney was a different story (you don't want to hear about that, hehe). The flight was long but we caught up on all the movies we didn't get to see over the past 6 months. We watched 4 movies on the flight. We arrived in Vancouver sunday morning. Unfortunately for us that was the morning after Halloween so our first impression of the place wasn't the best. They'd obviously had a big night, hehe. We found out later that they had the biggest street party, thousands of people took over the street in front of where we were staying. When we made our way up 4 flights of stairs with our stuff there were half drunk beers everywhere and it stunk. Our room was worse. we were in a 6 bed dorm. 4 half naked smelly drunk guys were passed out. We were so tired by that stage we just joined them. Everone slept for most of the day, we fit in well.
Vancouver was really nice. Very much like perth. Pretty relaxed. The best thin is that the drink are so cheap, you can get double shots of spirits with a mixer for only $6. We didn't truely get to take advantage of that cause we were so busy and wouldn't have handled a hangover too well. We spent most of out time in Van just organising stuff, phones, bank accounts, Sin numbers, and getting gear for the snow. It's a beautiful place so hopefully we'll go back and see stanly park and Vancouver island at some stage. We went to the Ice hockey, best thing we've done so far. Cause Ayden loves it so much i think i really appreciated it. His enthusiasm has worn off on me. We saw Vancouver Canucks V's New york Rangers. We went with a group from the hostel so they guy went through some of the rukes with us before we left. There are actually rules for fighting. Fighting is as much a part of the game as actual hockey is. Fighting is totally acceptable but as long as it's a mutual fight. There's alot of ettiquate that goes with it which is what you don't realise unless someone tells you the rules. all makes sense though. Can't have a bunch of very competative men with hockey sticks and blades taking to each other. Much better that they fist fight rather than kill each other with sticks. There was one good fight in the game we watched. It involved the whole 2 teams in the end. Was unusual apparently but was sorted out very quickly, noone got hurt and the game continued. Good game and we won. We've adopted Canucks as our team :)
Now we're in whistler. really happy with our accomodation. It's not what we applied for but luckily the people who allocate the rooms did the right thing for us. They decided that we would be better at a place called Brio rather than Glacier (which is what we applied for). I think they are right. The rooms are bigger and we have 2 single beds side by side rather than bunk beds. Our little unit is better than we though. Nothing fancy but perfect for what we need. We also managed to score a working TV. I think we're the only ones so far to have a tv. Awesome :) Today and yesterday were a bit rainy and wet but the day we got here was beautiful and sunny so we had one good day to walk around as see a bit of the village. We've been really tired since leaving Sydney and are still catching up on sleep. I've never felt jet lag so bad. Last couple of days here have been great cause we've had time to relax and sleep in. Nothing much to do now til monday. We start our trining on monday, it goes for about a week and then we start. It snowed a tiny bit today as we walked into the village. That means it's snowing on the mountain, yay. It looks strange here at the moment cause there's no snow. The ski runs look like really wide hiking tracks. Hopefully that'll change in the next couple of weeks. It's not as cold as i thought but i think that'll change once it starts snowing.
We discovered free internet at starbucks which is great. Just means we have to buy a coffee. Hopefully we'll be able to stay in contact that way.
Hope everyone is doing well. We're having a great time so far and i'm sure it'll get better once it snows and we can go boarding. Can't wait.
It seems somehow my hotmail has been hacked and a spam email sent from it to anyone in my contact/history list. Please disregard the email below its a hoax.

I've created a favourites list in my email so that i can send out group emails whilst i'm away. You've been added to my list. I don't have everyone's addresses yet but will keep adding as i go. Some of these addresses may be a little out dated too so if this is not your preferred email, please let me know :)
Also, If you don't want to receive these group email i'll be sending, please just let me know. I honestly won't be offended. There's nothing worse than getting the updates of someones life that you're not interested in, hehe.
As most of you know we are heading off to Canada in just over a week and before we leave we would like to spend some time catching up with everyone.
We will be at The Cott Hotel for lunch from 12:30 on Sat 24th Oct. We're heading to the OBH later in the afternoon for a few drinks and then finally onto The Windsor for dinner at bout 7:30. If you're free anytime during the day, we'd love to catch up and have a drink with you :)
Due to popular demand.. and mixed reviews about Waroona the ski club is now hosting..A day on the river festival. ... this sunday 18th Oct featuring our favorite club couple Gilly and Bec!
Please come down to Deep Water Point to say farewell, whilst enjoying fine tunes ( via my ipod dock), a BBQ and beers. The boat will be out from 10-3pm
We had a fairly average response to Spring in the Valley this year. Thank you to those people who replied but unfortunately we have decided to cancel our bus. Chris and i are leaving soon after so it was going to be a lot of extra stress and it seemed that most people had other committments etc.
Hopefully we'll have another opportunity to get together and have a few drinks very soon. Hopefully a cocktail party is in the making.
We still may organise to meet up at one of the wineries for the day. Maybe Elmars. It just means everyone will need to find their own way. Will let you know soon :)
Sadly (for all you guys), my permanent
departure from Perth is imminent, and as such, I am hocking all possible
assets. Thus, the following gear is available to a good home at a reasonable
price:
ML Boarding Sequel 138 with large Custom
boots
Large Rip Curl vest and short sleeve wetty
top
The gear is in good nick, and is tailored
for the extreme rider such as myself (2nd place in novice division,
WestOz Comp 4, 2008). Any collectors who are interested, I will gladly
autograph the gear for value-adding.
Please pass this on to anyone you know who
is looking for gear. Cheers.
So far i have only had a couple of people reply to my email about this years Spring in the Valley. I enquired about booking the function room above the UWA boat shed in matilda bay to start and finish however it is all booked out for that weekend.
If no-one else is interested in coming then i will cancel the bus so please let me know asap if you would like to do it.
I've tentatively booked a bus for Spring in the Valley on Sat the 10th Oct. Everyone has been asking me whether i'm doing a bus again this year so i thought i'd better :) Plus I really enjoy it, it's a great day.
Before i confirm the bus booking though, i'd just like a rough idea on who is interested in coming. We had 85 people last year, it was a big day. Depending on how many people are interested, i can book a large or small bus.
A couple of things will change this year.
This year everyone who goes to the Valley on the day needs to carry a pass. The pass cost $5 so i will organise passes for everyone. It means that the cost will need to go up to $25 each per ticket. This will include the bus for the day, light breaky and champas and your pass.
This year we will only go to two places. one in the morning and one in the arvo. There's often lines so rather than only get a small amount of time at each place, people have said they would prefer to stay at one place for longer. We will go to Sitella in the morning and possibly Elmars or Great northern distillery in the arvo.
Bus will leave from my mum's place which is around the corner from my old place in lockridge.
Could you please reply to this email asap letting me know if you think you'll be coming and how many tickets you think you would like. Numbers can just be an estimation.
Depending on the response i get, i'll send out a formal invite and finer details.
The boat is back in action but unfortunately the weather forecast looks like poo for Saturday when I was planning to take it out. If it turns out to be clear'ish on Saturday (12th) I will take it out in the arvo and send texts out to the regulars and anyone interested - so if you wanna be on that cool list let me know (by sms 0417123268, not by email as won't check between now & then).
Alternatively, if any of the towers/drivers can take it out on Sunday that will be better but I can't as I'll be winning a footy premiership.
Cheers, Phil

hi guys,
Despite kate's initial enthusiasm, it looks like the boat won't be
making it's long awaited return until next weekend (Dodgy weather, other
things on, general lack of enthusiasm for this weekend). However, i'm
picking her up on monday & taking her back to shed so unless there's an
armageddon like event i'll definitely take it out next saturday (12th).
Cheers,
Phil

Has just been to an emergency meeting with FESA, Main Road, BOM etc. They are predicting this to be one of the biggest storms we have had in the last 5-6 years; SO batton down the hatches if stuff is loose and like Ryan says be careful driving.
