There will be two training sessions next week, one on Monday, December 29th and

Just a reminder to everyone that to access the Hart House athletic facilities you
need to present your AC membership card at the Porter's Desk where they will
issue you a guest pass. You will need to bring your own towel and lock.
Happy Holidays Everyone!

Hello to everyone and thanks to all who responded. It looks like we only have a
couple of takers for tomorrow (Tues.) and Wednesday, but Friday (the 26th) and
Monday (the 29th) seem to be good days for a bunch of you. I will confirm with
Sensei tomorrow, but I believe we'll aim for those two dates. Next Tuesday was
also a possibility for some of you so again, I'll double check with Sensei and
post a definite answer tomorrow.
Lori
Hello Everyone,
With regards to training at Hart House over the holidays, I spoke to Katerina
at the Porter's desk this morning. Apparently, the booking desk is already
closed for the break, although their message does not indicate this. There are
three rooms available to use, one with mats. Although we can not officially
book these rooms at this point, we may meet there and do some training
together.
Tominaga Sensei is availabe to teach us this week on Tuesday, the 23rd,
Wednesday, the 24th, and Friday the 26th at 2:00. Hart House closes at 5:00,
except on Wednesday, which is 4:00.
Next week, we could meet on Monday, the 29th and Tuesday the 30th at the same
time.
If you can make any of these sessions, please email me TODAY so that I can let
Sensei know and send out another general email for everyone, confirming when we
can meet.
One last thing, if we are able to train, Sensei suggests that we go out for a
bowl of hot soup together afterwards:)
Let me know asap.
Thanks,
Lori
There is definitely class tonight from 9:00 to 10:45 pm. The location will either be in the Dance Studio or the Fencing Salle. The AC thinks that the Fencing Club "might" have a practice tonight. They can't give me a definite answer till later today, but I'm sending out the email now before it gets too close to class. Show up to the Fencing Salle first, if it is occupied at 9:00pm please move up to the Dance Studio. Sorry for the inconvenience.
I am really really sorry for what happened on Saturday. For the people that showed up, sorry for the inconvenience. I have triple-checked with various "departments" within the Athletic Centre and tomorrow night's class will start as regularly scheduled. There are changes to the Wednesday and Friday classes. Please see below
Practice Times:
Wednesday December 17, 2003 9-10:45 PM. Fencing Salle (AC closes at 11:00pm) Friday December 19, 2003 7-8:45 PM Fencing Salle (AC closes at 9:00pm) Saturday December 20, 2003 12-2 PM Upper Gym (we have the gym till 3pm)
Hi All,
I just confirmed this with Hart House for my own interest and
thought I'd pass it along to everyone else.
If you have a valid AC membership (alumni, community, student...)
you're actually allowed to use Hart House's athletic facilities
between Dec 22nd and Jan 2nd when the AC is closed. This also
includes holidays (Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year's) for anyone
really inclined to work out on those days.
Just present your AC membership card at the Hart House Porter's
Desk and they'll issue you with a pass to use the athletic
facility. You'll need to bring your own towel and lock.
So if you're looking for a place to work out while the AC is
closed and our classes are on hold, keep Hart House in mind.
Thanks,
Gary Chan

Hello,
Hopefully everyone that was able to attend the Christmas party on Saturday
evening had a nice time. Thanks again goes to Charlotte and her parents for
hosting the event.
The next outing will be our annual Kagami Biraki celebration on Saturday,
January 17th, following an all-day workout. This year, we will be going to
Shintori Japanese Restaurant at 6:30 to enjoy a buffet-style meal. The cost
will be $20 for students and $25 for non-students, which includes your dinner,
unlimited pop, and all taxes and gratuities. The restaurant is centrally
located in Toronto; I will forward directions to you as the date draws nearer.
Dominic has begun taking sign-ups and he will continue to do so at classes
between now and then. If Dominic is absent, I will have the sign-up sheet.
If you are planning to attend, please sign up as soon as possible, as the
restaurant needs our numbers to arrange for appropriate seating and space.
Since the classes will be somewhat sporadic between now and the new year, our
paths may not always cross and therefore, feel free to speak to Emily, Joanne,
Dominic, or me should you have any questions and/or suggestions.
One last item is that we need a microphone and a sound board for that night;
should you have either or both of these items at your disposal that the club
could borrow, please let me know.
Thanks,
Lori
IGNORE THE PREVIOUS EMAIL! I just received an email from the AC indicating that we are not allowed to practice during exam week. We will have a Saturday class and I will let you know the location as soon as I find out.
Class will continue as regularly scheduled for this week. The only exception will be Saturday's class. I'll let you know the change as soon as I find out. We can still practice in the AC during the exam period because none of our practice locations conflict. However, there will be exams running while we workout, so please refrain from making noise. I know how excited everyone gets while training, but please keep all the Tueday and Wednesday workouts silent until exams are over. Feel free to make as much noise as you would like during the Friday and Saturday workout.

Just a reminder to everyone about the gathering at Charlotte's house tomorrow
evening. Hopefully everyone will be able to make it, even those of you that
have to work Saturday during the day; drop by, even for an hour if that's all
you can manage. It's a great opportunity to meet some of the newer people at
the dojo, and/or to also catch up with the ones that you don't often get a
chance to, due to the various time restrictions we each have in our lives. And
let's be honest, it's a perfect excuse to get together and simply EAT. The
festivities begin at 6:00, but you can show up anytime throughout the evening
(that just means less food for the later arrivals:) Oh yeah, that, and you
don't have to do 20 push-ups at the door. SO, one again, the address is 5
Braemore Gardens, one block north of Davenport and one east of Christie. If
you'd like a map, check out mapquest.com to get a better sense of the area in
which she lives.
See you Saturday,
Lori
The upper gym will be occupied with desks for the winter exam period starting
Sat. Dec. 6th. We were supposed to be given another location to train in, but
the AC has not confirmed a location or time, so Saturday's class is cancelled
until further notice.
The AC will be closed from December 22 to January 2, so there will be no karate
class during that time. Please keep an eye on your email over the next month
for scheduling changes.

From the hottest toys to tips on keeping fit this winter, you’ll find a
range of helpful holiday info here.
http://special.msn.com/network/happyholidays.armx
Most of the people competing at the tournament this Sunday are
old-hands, but here are some quick tips just in case:
Eat a good breakfast. I personally like to eat oatmeal the morning of a
competition, something that's not too heavy, but that'll keep me going
for several hours. It can be a long day.
Bring some food and drink. You want to make sure that you're never too
hungry or too full thoughout the day, and that you're always hydrated. I
like to eat pb&j sandwiches and drink heavily-diluted orange juice,
supplemented by water. Sometimes your event can be called quite a bit
earlier or later than you expect. It's also better not to have to depend
upon the food that's available at the tournament.
Make sure you've got all of your gear: Karate-gi, belt, warm-up jacket,
mouth guard, fist gear, groin protector, chest protector, shin guards,
water bottle, portable music player, small towel, lucky underwear,
whatever. It's usually a good idea to pack this stuff the night before
so that you don't forget anything and you're not rushing around in the
morning.
Before you perform your Kata, remind yourself of your pick-up points.
Don't remember what Kata pick-up points are? C'mon and ask me sometime.
Make sure that you're at least generally familiar with the rules of
competition (available at http://www.wkf.net/). Karate Ontario runs a
slightly modified version of these rules: for kyu belts, Kumite matches
are shorter and have point limits, and Kata still uses the older
scorecard system.
For kyu belts, your Kumite event is usually going to be run immediately
after your Kata event, in the same ring. This means that you're going to
have little if any time in between those two events. Plan accordingly.
Most competitors (regardless of the sport) find that a routine before
and during a competition is an important step towards achieving their
goals. The degree of routine and what makes up that routine is personal.
I'll talk more about routines before the next tournament.
Good luck.

Steven.
Hello Everyone,
Just to let you know, Charlotte has graciously offered us her parents' home, on
Saturday, Decebmer 6th, as the abode to hold our Christmas Supper Soirée in.
The festivities will commence at 6:00 and we would ask that everyone attending
bring along a prepared dish of some sort. In the past, there has always been a
good variety of appetizers, entrées, and desserts to choose from so simply
bring whatever you fancy.
Charlotte's address is 5 Braemore Gardens in Toronto. A map to her home can be
found at www.mapquest.com. If you're not driving, the "Christie 126" bus leaves
Christie subway station every half hour, on the half hour, and will get you to
Christie and Davenport, which is the closest intersection to her house.
If you have any questions, feel free to send me an email, or you can ask either
Charlotte or myself about any other details in class. Hopefully everyone will
be able to take part in this event.
:)
Lori
Hello all,
Here is a direction to the Humber College by TTC:
From Finch station, take 36A/B.
The bus will go west along Finch ave, and turn left onto Humber Blvd.
Get off at the 1st stop on Humber Blvd. The ride takes about
20-30 minutes. Be there by 10am so you have some time
to warm up.
I'll also hand out maps in class.
Thanks
Hiro

I don't know if any of you have the trouble registering for the CPR
Training course this weekend.
I am told by the program office that they have updated the course on
the computer system, so now we can register in the AC front desk.
Also, if no one registers by this Wednesday, the course will be
cancelled. The course has to have at least 8 people registering to
be maintained.

Hello Everyone,
For those of you that have not yet met me, my name is Lori and I am the Social
Director at the dojo. Every year we all get together for some holiday cheer
around Christmas time, and this year, Saturday, December 6th is the date we are
planning for. If you have a home that can accomodate approximately 50-60 of
your dojo mates, and would like to have us over for an evening, please reply to
me at your earliest convenience. In the past, we have done a pot-luck supper;
if you have any other ideas or suggestions with regards to the meal and
beverages, please feel free to share them with me.
Thanks,
Lori
It seems that AC has managed to organize a CPR/first aid training session.
Please see the information below. I realize this is very short notice and
please do not feel obligated to sign up even if you had indicated to me that
you were interested. There will other training sessions in the new year. Please
see the AC events calendar for the other dates.

Hey guys/gals,
Sorry for the delay, but we just got the finalized information today. So
here's the deal. There are around 30 spots available for the CPR training. I
know that the total estimates for all the clubs combined were more than 30
people. But it will be served on a first come, first serve basis. And if we
see that enough people want to do it, we will book another training date. To
register you have to goto the Main Office in the AC and bring the money too.
The spots will be given to the first 30 people who have paid.
The info:
Day 1: Saturday November 29th
Time: 10am-6pm
Location: Student Lounge then room 307 after lunch
Day 2: Sunday November 30th
Time: 10am-6pm
Location: Room 307 all day
Cost per person is $100 and that includes the book and the recertification
costs. If for one reason or another there is not enough time to complete the
course then there will be another session on monday 5pm-9pm at room 2007 to
finish it off
Thanks,
Sorry for the delay.

Thanks for coming to our house warming (if you we're able to make it) and
for the kind complements and wonderful gifts.
If you weren't able to make it perhaps the next time.
We really appreciated have you there to help us "break-in" our new home.
Now begins the never ending task of fixing up and maintenance involving the
same number of trips to Canadian Tire and home Depot.
Hopefully it will all be a labor of love.

Remember to bring food, because time is limited between workouts. We will be
going out for dinner after the workouts. Reservations for UTKC will be made at
Pho Hung on Bloor for 6pm. Pho Hung is located on Bloor St. west of Avenue Rd.
It's on the third floor of the same building as Greg's Ice Cream.

The all-day workout is coming up on Saturday, October 25th.
The schedule is:
9:00am - 11:00am First workout
11:00am - 12:00pm Break
12:00pm - 2:00pm Second workout
2:00pm - 3:00pm Break
3:00pm - 5:00pm Third workout
All the workouts and breaks are in the Upper Gym. You may wish to bring some
food for the breaks; you'll probably be too pressed for time to buy any. Also
consider an extra gi.
While it's not mandatory to attend all three workouts, you are strongly
encouraged to do so. At the end of the day we'll go for dinner to reward
ourselves for making it to *all three workouts :D *.
