There are a few things I wanted to bring up and communicate to the club, and none of them are related to each other. And rather than send separate posts on each of these things, I thought I'd just send one post listing them all. All of these things are rather important, so I encourage you all to read it.
1) Summer Camp date changed One of the traditions that our club holds in its many decades of history is that we hold an annual 3-day (Natsu Gasshuku) Summer Camp at Hart House Farm during the August long weekend of each year. This year, we will again hold the event during the summer at Hart House Farm. However, due to circumstances beyond our control, we won't be able to host it during the August long weekend. Instead, we will be hosting it the weekend before on the days of Friday July 25th, Saturday July 26th and Sunday July 27th. I felt that it's important that everyone knows about this date changed early now, so that no one will be caught off guard later in the summer when we start making plans and announcements for it. If anyone has any questions, comments or concerns about this, please feel free to ask me or any of the other members of the Executive team in class.
3) Classes in August Our summer schedule is currently set to go from July 4th to August 15th. Officially, right now, there are no classes scheduled from then till the start of the new school term. That being said, I'd like to try to arrange to extend that schedule a bit more, possibly fill in that gap with more classes. I'd like to get a count of who would be available during that time and would be interested in coming to these classes. Please don't assume that I know what your preferences are. Let me know if you're interested in and would actually attend classes in mid-late August. PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS.
2) Towel cleaning
Another long-standing tradition in our club is the towel-pushing that
we do at the beginning of each class. It is a tradition that I have
every intention of upholding. One of the consequence of always pushing
the towels is that we also need to have a consistent effort in getting
the towels washed and cleaned. In the past, we've had a few club
members generously volunteer to wash the towels themselves. But this
system will not work and sustain itself for the long-term, nor is this
fair on the few people who do volunteer for us. To that end, we've come
out with a new system that will hopefully spread this towel-washing
effort amongst more members of the club. In the next few days, we'll
present this new system and slowly integrate it into how our club will
run.
4) Club video camera Whoever has the camera right now, or knows who has it, could you please contact me and let me know? Thank you.
5) Club Handbook We have several copies of the club handbook for anyone interested in getting a copy. For those that are not aware, it contains all the information about how our club works. Things like club etiquette, the grading system, Japanese words used in class. Let me know if anyone is interested. Alternatively, you can get and print a copy of handbook yourself here: http://www.jinbukai.org/utkc/Glossary/handbook.pdf
If anyone has any question, comments or concerns, please address them to me or to any of the other members of the Executives. Thank you.
Just a reminder that this Friday May 30th is the kyu belt grading test.
Once
again, please ensure that you have registered both with the AC and
Karate Ontario prior to grading this Friday, or else you will be
restricted from taking the test. If you have questions on how to
register, please do not hesitate to e-mail me or talk to Manki in class.
Grading takes place in the Fencing Salle. The schedule for grading test is as follows:
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm - All White and yellow belts
8:00 pm - 9:00 pm - Green belts and up
You can review the format of the test on the club website (it is very useful if this is your first time grading):
Please
be punctual. You would also need to make sure that you warm up
and stretch adequately ahead of time as the test will start on the times indicated
above and there will be no formal warm up session like regular class.

This year we are planning on celebrating Sensei's birthday after the Jinbukai tournament on Saturday June 14. I'm thinking of the possibility of having a potluck bbq, and I'm still deciding on where to have it, but I'd like to get a feeling of how many people will be able to make it out for the celebration. If you could email me: dorothy-yu@... by May 31, that'd be great.
Hey UTKC Members,
This is another reminder about the two events that are happening on
June 8th(Toronto Open) and June 14th(Jinbukai). I have printed off
some application forms for people who are interested in joining the
June 8th competition. Just come to me after class tomorrow to sign
up and remember to bring me the money($40) as well. More info can be
found on this link.

For the Jinbukai event, I still need more volunteers to help and
black belts who are willing to help and judge. Currently, I have
1...ONLY ONE person to help!... come on guys, spare 1 or 2 hours to
help us out. We can't let our sister club, Goulding to do
everything. As for competitors, I am expecting most of you guys
joining especially the ones grading on May 30th. Please let me know
what divison and activity you are going in(Kata/Kumite) and pay me
the money($10). If not, Adam and I will find you. :)
Thanks everyone and please email me if you have any questions
regarding these two events.

Mon 7:10 pm - 9:00 pm Upper Gym
Fri 7:10 pm - 9 pm Fencing Salle
Sat 10 am - 1 pm Upper Gym

sign you up for the session with the least number of people. You can
(and are very welcome to), however, attend all 3 classes of the week.
Hi everyone,
The Athletic Centre will be closed this Monday May 19th due to the
Victoria Day holiday. Class is thus canceled on this day as well.
Peter
The collage is awesome! And thanks for the shinai and karate gi. I had a great time last night but I don't think it has really begun to sink in yet....
I promise to keep in touch!

Hi everyone,
For those interested in seeing the collage that we put together as a gift for John, you can view a full-size version of it here:
Hey UTKC Members,
This is your friendly tournament director here to remind you about
two very special karate events. Sorry for the long email in advance.
1st Event:
On June 8th, there will be a Toronto Open 3 Karate tournament by
Karate Ontario at Humber College (205 Humber College Blvd). It is 40
dollars for all belts including black and the rules are the same for
any KO tournament. The interesting aspect about this competition is
that anyone can join even if the club is not registered by KO. If
you would like to compete please refer to the application package
(link below) and give me your form and MONEY (very important ;p) by
May 24th.
The link is:
http://www.karateontario.org/website/downloads/Toronto_Open_3_Package.pdf
2nd Event:
On June 14th, it will be our annual Jinbukai tournament with our
sister club, Goulding. This is a tournament that I believe everyone
should participate in as it is hosted by us and would be
disappointing if only a few of us compete. If you have been
practicing with us for the past two terms (all levels including
black) and especially the ones going for grading near the end of the
month, it is a great opportunity to show off those skills. It will
be 10 dollars to compete and I promise you that my other co-director,
Adam and I will be bugging everyone in class to ask which activity
you are competing in (Kata, Kumite or both).
In addition to this, we are also selling baked goods or other edible
items for this tournament. This is a great way to increase our funds
in the club which helps keep the cost of activities like training
camps low.
For this event, I REALLY NEED volunteers to help out during the
competition especially for the selling and baking. If you can help
out, please email me or Adam as soon as possible so I can start
emailing our partners at Goulding.
Thanks everyone and please email me if you have any questions
regarding these two events. :)

Jimmy Yuk

As
announced in class, the next kyu belt is taking place on Friday May 30th. You must have registered both with Karate Ontario (please see
Manki for this) and with the athletic centre (sign up for karate club
at the main office). You must have been training regularly for the
past term. Grading fee is $20. Please sign up in class with me or email me. The deadline for signing up is Monday May 26th.
Details regarding time for your grading will be announced at a later date.
The kick that winded me was from the Pan American Karate champ.I wouldn't get winded by a kick from a novice, lol

Josephine.
Men's Novice Kata (12 competitors)
Jimmy-Silver
Adam-Bronze
Women's team Black Belt Kata(5 teams)
Josephine-Silver
Everyone did amazing today and showed their karate spirit and
support for each other. Moyo and Elaine did really well competing
against blacks belts that competed in the nationals and worlds.
To Johnny: I am now very sympathetic to the kick you had in the
chest in the last KO since I got winded today from a roundhouse to
the ribs. It does sting quite a bit. ;p
Either way, good job everyone again and hope to see everyone in
class!

As some of you may or may not know, John McEwen will be
leaving for Calgary
in less than a month. We will be hosting a farewell party for him on Tuesday
May 13 (place and time to be determined).
It would be great to get the whole club (especially the
senior members) together to give him a proper send off! If you could please
RSVP to dorothy-yu@... by
May 3, so we can get a feel of how many people will be able to attend.
I would like to thank all of you who have completely registered for the “NCCP Multi-Sport A” which will be led by Sensei Timothy Suzuki. It promises to be an educational and fun weekend. This is just a reminder that Sensei Suzuki will be purchasing our manuals this week and will require your payment to secure your spot. If you have not sent in your payment please do so today. Cheques should be made payable to NOX Martial Arts Clubs. Receipts will be issued on your arrival for tax purposes. For your convenience, NOX can also accept payment by credit card.
Hi everyone,
Thank you to all who came out for Spring Camp. Everyone played a role
in making it such a great weekend and certainly in making the
organizing easier on me.
To all the meal captains, the meals were awesome and I can't remember
the last time I had so many great meals in the span of two days.
To all the drivers, thank you for volunteering and driving everyone. I
know some of us had some late-night adventures in the fog trying to
find our way to Hart House Farm.
To everyone, thank you for being there and making it such a wonderful
experience.
Peter
Isn't this the shito-ryu cup? i.e. not for shotokan katas (although I guess kumite should be fine)

Hey all,
Sorry for sending this to everyone, however this only applies to
Novice Men (White to Orange belt).
I'm interested in doing Team Kata at the Shitoryu Iwata Cup tournament
that Moyo sent out an email about.
I think it would be a good opportunity to work on our Katas and this
tournament seems like a perfect place to start since (according to the
tournament website) Bunkai is not required, which means all that we'd
need to work on is form and synchronization.
If anyone is interested in doing this send me an email ASAP so I can
get Moyo to enter us.

Hello everyone, there is a tournament on Sunday April 27th, at the
Etobicoke Olympium called the Shitoryu Iwata Cup and it is open to all
ranks. I know I am not the tournament director, however, this is not
your run of the mill Karate Ontario Tournament, and I have the
registration forms. Therefore, if you wish to participate, send me
your full name, rank and weight class (if you are a black belt who
wishes to do kumite). I will sign you up and pay everyone's fees
using one cheque. You can then reimburse me when next I see you. The
cost is $35.00 (if payment is made before April 14th). I want to send
the sign-ups and money tomorrow afternoon if possible, because I am
going out of town this Saturday and will not be back for a week at
which time the deadline for the discount will have passed. So if you
want to participate in this tournament, e-mail me ASAP. For more
tournament details, visit the link below.

Hi everyone,
Due to Spring Camp, class for this Friday (April 11) and Saturday
(April 12) will be canceled. Class will commence again on Tuesday
(April 15).
Peter
I've compiled here a ride list for going to
camp, and coming from camp, as well as some responsibilities for each
of the drivers. I must confess that I have not contacted each of the
drivers to see when each person plans on leaving Toronto and driving up
to camp. So, passengers and drivers, please PLEASE contact and
coordinate with each other as best as you can. I'll try to get that
information for you before Friday.
For those who will be there Friday night, I was hoping that we could all grab dinner somewhere nearby after we unload our stuff at Hart House Farm. (Or, if you want, just have dinner yourself beforehand.) So for those who plan to be there Friday night, let's try to be there by about 8:30pm.
If there's anything missing here, or if I've forgotten your name somehow, please let me know as soon as possible.
On the way to camp: Sensei (meet in the Athletic Centre lobby @ 7:00pm) - Manki, Brent, Brian
Jimmy (leaving early Saturday morning) - Shelley - pick up Jimmy's food items
Josephine - Shaz - pick up various common items
Jay - Vivian - pick up Jay and Vivian's food items
- pick up various common items
Jamie - Adam - pick up Adam's food items - pick up punching bags, first aid kit, various other stuff from AC

Everyone else not listed will get to camp on their own.

Josephine

Peter - carry various common items
Everyone else not listed will get home on their own.
This message is for the drivers as well as all the individuals who will
be getting to Hart House Farm on their own. Some people have requested
me for this information, so I thought I'd send it out early.
(I'll send out a ride-list out very soon listing who the drivers are, I promise)

Spring camp is this weekend!!! Hope you are
all excited!!! I've compiled a list here of the things that you will
want to bring with you. Make sure you double, triple and quadruple
check against it as you prepare for camp.
Things to bring: - as many gi's as you can carry - coat hangers to hang up your gi's for drying - comfortable running shoes - at least one set of workout clothes (t-shirt and shorts) in case we decide to run a workout not in karate gi's. - an umbrella (as the Weather Network is reporting rain this weekend.)
- toothpaste, toothbrush, personal hygiene items, etc - towel(s) - tensor bandages if you think you're going to need them and/or sports tape - sleeping bag/blanket, pillow - tent (for those who want to camp outside) - alarm clock
- water bottle (EXTRA IMPORTANT!!!) - insect repellent - aspirins/tylenol/advil - or whatever works for you - flashlight - any tournament and/or karate-related video tapes - games/cards/books - fun things to do during the spare times. - an expectation of loads and loads of fun (EVEN MORE EXTRA IMPORTANT!!!)
We may be sharing Hart House
Farm with other people. While I've no doubt that they are all friendly
people, you should still be cautious with your valuables and belongings. If you are going to be bringing anything expensive (ie: camera), be careful not to let it lying around.
That's all from me. I'll send out a ride-list very soon. Stay tuned!!
Hi everyone,
Will everyone who will be attending Spring Camp please email me with the
following info please?
- Name
- Contact email
- Contact phone #
- Any food allergies
For the sake of completeness, email me even if you think I know all this
info about you already. Thanks all.
I'll send out an email soon listing ride lists, and what you will need to bring
with you. So stay tuned!
Peter
