For the white belts in the Karate Club that are taking a grading test
for the first time, there's nothing (much) to be scared about. The
grading test will cover what you've been practicing in class. Here's a
list, in no particular order:
1. Kihon: Basic blocks (gedan barai, jodan age uke, chudan soto uke,
chudan uchi uke, shuto uke), punches (oi zuki, gyaku zuki), and kicks
(mae geri, yoko geri kekomi, yoko geri keage).
2. Kihon ippon kumite (basic one-step techniques with a partner). The
examiner in charge of this section section will tell you what to do.
3. Kata: Heian shodan.
Not sure about the terminology? Take a look in your handbook. You'll
need to be familiar enough so that you can understand the instructions
given by the examiners.
What are the examiners looking for? You should be able to perform
everything listed above, but we recognize that things are still going to
be a little rough. If nothing else, concentrate on using your hips when
you block and punch. What's also very important is your attitude and
spirit. Are you kiai'ing on every attack and counter? Trying to be fast
and powerful? As Tominaga Sensei is fond of saying, this isn't tai chi
or ballroom dancing...
Is someone going to tell you whether or not you should take the test?
Nope, that's up to you. But just remember: it's not a race.
Any other questions, just ask anyone in the class who's attended a
grading test before.
