Hi All,
This is the suggested 'What To Bring To Summer Camp' checklist. For all you
veterans of Summer Camp this is probably all old news, but all our camp novices
may find this information useful. So here's the list of handy items you may want
to bring:
- insect repellent
- as many gi's as you can carry
- coat hangers to hang gi's up for drying
- toothbrush, toothpaste and other personal toiletries you can't live without
(deodorant is always a good thing)
- biodegradable soap/shampoo
- water bottle, there's no convenient water fountain nearby, and you can get
quite dehydrated over the course of a two-hour workout on a hot day if you don't
replenish your fluids.
- running shoes
- towel(s)
- sleeping bag/blankets, sheets, pillow
- tent (for those of you who want to camp out)
- games/cards/books for when we're not training, or eating...
- aspirin/tylenol/advil - whatever works for you, you may need it
- tensor bandages if you think you're going to need them and/or sports tape (the
club is not responsible for providing sports tape for everyone - it is there for
emergency use only)
- flashlight for the evening
- swim suit if you are brave enough to venture into the pond to cool off
- sunglasses and a cap. Sometimes we train outside on the grass
- T-shirt and shorts. Sometimes we'll run a workout not in a Karate-gi.
Sometimes Tominaga Sensei organizes activities before a workout.
- any tournament and/or karate-related video tapes
Here's a note from previous years about water usage and showering at camp:
- There are washrooms, toilets, and running water, but no showers. Water comes
from a well system so we must all do our best to try and conserve water. Using
baby wipes to clean yourself off is one way to save water, as is using a squeeze
bottle as a modified shower if you're taking a sponge bath.
Some other notes about camp:
- The main house is where those who will not be camping out will be staying.
There are two main rooms upstairs (one with bunk beds) and beds/mattresses are
available on a first come, first serve basis. There is also space on the main
floor for people to stake out a spot to sleep.
- Note that Hart House Farm is an open facility so it is possible that people
other than us may also be staying there. Remember to exercise common sense with
your valuables and belongings.
- Meal Preparation and Clean-Up Crews: Everyone attending camp will need to be
on one meal crew (preparing breakfast, lunch, or dinner) and at least one meal
clean-up crew (washing dishes/pots, sweeping, mopping, etc, afterwards). You may
also have another assigned duty outside of meals so please check the lists
posted outside the kitchen upon your arrival at Hart House Farm.
- For people who are arriving on Friday afternoon/evening, please be aware that
there are no meals being prepared that evening so you can either bring your own
dinner to prepare, eat before you arrive, or drive to Brampton, which is about a
20 minute drive from camp, to get something.
- Members from the Goulding Karate Club (our affiliated club) will be coming to
camp as well. This may be the first time attending for some of the adults and
teens/kids from Goulding so please be sure to say 'hi' and make them feel
welcome.
