Saturday was ideal at Skyline. Bluebird skies, 15-20 mph wind, 3-6"
of powder over a soft base that is now 6-7 feet deep. I taught my
13 year old daughter how to snowkite and she had several successful
downwinders. 6-8 other kiters were there enjoying the perfect
conditions.
The upcoming storm is forecasted to deliver 2-4 feet of snow to the
Wasatch Plateau. This has been the best snowkiting season that I
have seen so far. I am actually sad that spring is coming. I am
starting to enjoy snowkiting more that than kiteboarding on the
water. I used to think that Brian was crazy driving to Skyline when
Mike and I were putting on our dry suits to go on the water. Maybe
Mike and I were the crazy ones...
What I find so appealing about snowkiting is the 3D effect of the
terrain. When the wind is strong you can go all over the place and
use the natural hills to boost big. When the wind is light you can
kiteloop up the hill and zip down. A couple weeks ago, I spent an
hour on Bosco hill in 6 mph wind. It was a lot of work, but still
it was fun. The Chasta Snow video is a real eye opener when it
comes to the potential of snowkiting.
Skyline is most likely the premier snow kiting location in the US
(let's ask Brian and Heather because they have spent the winter
criss-crossing the US). Read the posts on kiteforum. Most of the
hotspots around the country are big fields or lakes. Sure it is fun
to zip across a lake, but it doesn't come close to riding powder
over a thick snowpack with amazing terrain like we have at Skyline.
