Utah winter games has a clinic before. I think this is an air rifle event, but is still an excellent introduction to biathlon combined with the clinic.

As Washington Biathlon is one of the few places one can successfully get started (MN, NY, and Maine, also), we see many people fly in from other parts of the country to get the specific training, use of club rifles, safetey certification, etc. At the start of each season (summer and winter) we host an "Introduction to Biathlon". The winter one is the first week of January... check the web site for details - www.wabiathlon.org It is often easiest to start/learn about the sport in summer. The summer intro is usually one weekend either side of Memorial Day weekend. Again, check the web site. Or check out the web sites of biathlon groups elsewhere that may be nearer to you. Colorado Biathlon, Minnesota Biathlon, Wisconsin Biathlon, and West Yellowstone Ske Education Foundation are some of the Midwest and Mountain options. Google them and check out their web sites. Michael, thanks for the update.  I've had fun participating in a few
races at Soldier Hollow.  I didn't get involved last year because they
weren't usind 22's (if I remember correctly).  I think it is a great
sport and it is sad that the Olympic facility isn't being used.  I
don't see a very good solution to the problems you've identified.

I remember that the first year after the Olympics, the Utah Winter
Games sponsored a biathlon event at Soldier Hollow using 22's.  The
turn-out was great.  Is there anyway to get them involved again?

Assuming from the fact that you've posted to Utahbiathlon at Yahoo groups, I would guess you are in Utah? There are opportunities to get into biathlon in a number of locations near you.... Lander, Utah Soldier Hollow West Yellowstone and also Bozeman, MT Frazier, Colorado, and finally here in Washington State. We just had a guy from Boulder Colorado come out here to our August 18th event to get his "Rifle Safety Certification" and compete in a Summer Biathlon here.

Basically what you need to do is find a place that is having an event. Usually a "Rifle Safety" course is offered in conjunction with an event/race. It is often a good idea to introduce yourself to the sport at a summer event because it is easier and more comfortable to get to know the procedures on a warm sunny day, lying on a carpet in the grass, rather than on a cold, snowy day lying on a carpet in the snow. Not that you can't learn what you need in winter, but we encourage the first experience to be in summer. You still have time to seek out a race and do this. Just found the Utah Biathlon list and thought I'd stop in and
say "Hi".  Looks like the last post on here was from last year... so I
thought I'd stir up some action on it.  Washington Biathlon has summer
biathlon events scheduled for July 21, August 18, and Oct. 6th.
Anything going on in Utah this summer?  I know there are events at
West Yellowstone July 14, and Bozeman July 15... that's a little
closer to you guys.  www.wabiathlon.org if you're interested in more

Thanks for the reply Michael.

A couple more questions.  In general, are rifles provided by the
organizers for summer or winter events?  Do most biathaletes have
their own rifles?  They seem prohibitively expensive.
